Relating to NVDA 2019.3.1

Dejan Ristic

Hi,

I installed the stable NVDA 2019.3 version. When I restarted the machine, I found the version number from the subject line, that's to say, 2019.3.1. My decision is not to install it till I've been told to by those who can tell so.

Note:

I use Windows 7 operating system.

Note 2

I've checked all the mail messages, and found that none of them says a word relating to 2019.3.1. Due to the fact that I've been using NVDA for a longer period of time, let me suppose that this may be a minor version addressing some bug fixes.

Re: OE Classic 3.1 gets more accessibility fixes.

OE Classic is a third party program made to mimic OutLook express. Microsoft should have just open sourced outlook express like they did with Windows Live Writer, but, apart from a hacked version, which I won't send you, this is a close as you will get while still having a modern email client.

Very weird one!

Roger Stewart

I still can't get any action with Firefox and it has always worked in the past when downloading NVDA.  I then tried Internet Explorer 11.  This appeared to work as it took me to PayPal and when I entered everything there, it said redirecting to NV access.  There's where it stopped.  I never got back there from PayPal. I went back to my browser, and it was still on the download page so I just hit the download button.  I got something all right--NVDA from March of 2019!!  I just gave it up at this point.

will the add on updater update them?

Hi list 2019.3 is now on my computer I have several add ons that won’t work with the new version.  I’m aware of remote not working yet but will the dropbox and the skype and teamtalk add ons be updated soon?  I don’t want to remove the old ones to make sure new updates come in.  are there any timelines for these to be updated.  Also I didn’t quite see what is different in speech in the new version other than the different espeak engine.  What has changed there?

Alternatives to quickly change between voices and/or synths?

Gerardo Corripio

I’ve always with NVDA, because I’m dulingual, have used the Switch Synth AddOn, which isn’t yet compatible with NVDA 2019.3, for via a keystroke switching be using Vocalizer, or ViaVoice, switch quickly between the English or Spanish voice. I tried setting up a profile that’d allow me to do this, but it doesn’t work as I’d like it to, for instance 1 for ViaVoice LatinAmerican Spanish, 2 for American English etc; like I have it set it up with SwitchSynth now. What alternative do you guys have, and will they make the SwitchSynth AddOn compatible? If I do update to the latest NVDA, I plan to continue using (hopefully it’s compatible with the latest version) Synth ring settings selector, however what I don’t like about this one is that when in ViaVoice, you switch to American english, the speed is the same as in the Latin American Spanish; I’d like to have it a little bit slower for English than Spanish. Thanks for any info you guys might have on this matter.

The below is from their accessibility email list. No, I have no clue how to join it. I was added. For those who hate Thunderbird, this may be a good alternative but understand that the free version does not support IMAP or profiles yet.

Before I paste the email, here's the website. Check it out. Send them bugs and questions.

In the latest release of OE Classic 3.1, released today (10th February 2020), we've added the support for standard Message dialogs which are now fully screen-reader accessible. The dialogs use standard buttons and standard way of displaying messages which is easily readable to any screen-reader. The dialog we're describing are the ones such as "are you sure" type of dialogs. For example, when you right click the empty deleted items folder option one such dialog will show up.

To have this support there are some requirements though:

  • you must run at least Windows Vista or newer (Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 work well, and Windows 10 works best regarding this)

  • Theme support must be enabled on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. (so in other words, Windows must be using at least Windows Basic or Windows Aero theme). On Windows 10 this is not a problem, because the themes from Windows 8 and earlier are removed - Windows 10 has always theme support enabled so message dialogs in OE Classic will be always the standard Windows ones which are accessible. The requirement to have theme support enabled on Windows Vista / 7 / 8 will be removed in one of the updates when we switch to newer compiler than the one we currently use. But this is not much of a problem. Windows 7 usually is already set to one of the above mentioned themes by default, and for Windows 10 this is not a problem at all, since it has this always enabled.

  • Windows XP cannot be supported unfortunately. It doesn't support the required programming interface needed to add this. If you use that version, OE Classic will revert to the older dialogs which are not accessible. We have some ideas how to support even this, but it will require some compromises which we are only ready to take when the popularity of Windows XP is below 1% (currently about 2%).

In addition to all the above, we're also working on adding accessibility support for the list views (message list, contact list, folder list) which is currently the biggest known thing to be missing. We have made some progress regarding that in discovering why it doesn't work but there is still work to be done. We will notify you about this separately. There are also a few other windows which haven't been localized and as such adjusted for accessibility, and that will be done in time too, but these windows are rare in the current version (it is the updates window and send/receive window for example). With all of that we're approaching the goal of reaching 100% accessibility.

If you have suggestions, other than the ones which are already listed, we're always looking forward to those. If you have already made a suggestion, rest assured it is already in our queue to be implemented so there is no need to suggest it again.

That's simply because you don't understand how it works. Of course the custom donation button is going to do that, because you left 200 in the edit box before it.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA 2019.3 released

Hi everyone,

NV Access is very pleased to present the long awaited next installment of the world's most popular screen reader:  NVDA 2019.3!

NVDA 2019.3 is a very significant release containing many under-the-hood changes including the upgrade of Python 2 to Python 3, and a major re-write of NVDA’s speech subsystem. Although these changes do break compatibility with older NVDA add-ons, the upgrade to Python 3 is necessary for security, and the changes to speech allow for some exciting innovations in the near future.

Other highlights in this release include 64 bit support for Java VMs, Screen Curtain and Focus Highlight functionality, support for more braille displays and a new Braille viewer, and many many other bug fixes.

Please note, after updating any software, it is a good idea to restart the computer. Restart by going to the Shutdown dialog, selecting “restart” and pressing ENTER. Updating software can change files which are in use. This can lead to instability and strange behaviour which is resolved by rebooting. This is the first thing to try if you do notice anything odd after updating.

To read the full release, and download NVDA, please see the announcement at: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2019-3-released/

Kind regards

Quentin.

I honestly have no idea what donate page you're going to, but the custom fields on the NV Access donate page has a default value of 50 for the monthly option. You can use your arrow keys to decrease or increase the amount. The buttons are clearly labeled, although, I'd remove that uses, donate a, fabulous, adjective at the beginning. That's my only gripe with it. The edit fields can be controlled with the up and down arrow keys, so I have absolutely no idea what donate page you're visiting. You're right, I didn't experience a fraction of the anxiety you experienced, at all.

Also, even with 1 touch login on PayPal, you still have to manually approve the purchase. It doesn't happen automatically. It just logs you in automatically to PayPal.

Re: Update: Defender no longer mistakenly flagging NVDA

Gene

If you need to register, the add-on should let NVDA switch to its default voice to read the message.  Evidently, it doesn't, still using Eloquence to read the announcement and offering no way to switch to a different voice.  Perhaps there is a way that should be discussed.  I think that using another screen-reader and modifying the NVDA.ini file would solve the problem.  In general, if a synthesizer the user sets as default can't be used for some reason, NvDA defaults to its default.  If this is what is going on, that the user is trapped in a register message and can't switch to another synthesizer, that is very poor design.

To be safe, when upgrading to this version of NVDA if using any synthesizer that may not be compatible, it would be a good idea to switch to another synthesizer that will have no compatibility problems and make sure that setting is saved by using control NVDA key c after the change is made.  Then, turn off save settings on exit so you won't upgrade, try the incompatible voice, close NVDA, and have that new setting saved.  All this should be done before upgrading.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update - I mentioned on Friday that Microsoft had fixed their Defender definitions.  At the time it hadn't filtered down to me at least, although later on Friday it did and everything was fine again.  You should no longer have trouble installing NVDA 2019.3rc3 from: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2019-3rc3-now-available-for-testing/

If you are still having trouble using eSpeak on a previously installed or setup copy of the RC, you might need to install again, as Defender probably deleted the eSpeak.dll file (the file it was incorrectly flagging as problematic).

Also just to reassure everyone, there never was a problem with eSpeak or NVDA - there never was a trojan or malicious software, it was simply Windows defender incorrectly marking the espeak dll as problematic, even though there was nothing wrong with the file.

Kind regards

Quentin.

If you want it on permanently, check the box from the Vision section of the preferences, or press the key you've assigned to it twice.

The documentation doesn't explain what gets saved when, so we have to experiment a bit. The help text for the gesture is useful, though.

Given that there is a setting to disable the warning notification about the screen being blank, is it not possible to allow the screen curtain to re-start when NVDA re-starts? This info on the old Screen Curtain addon page suggests it was intended to be possible: in case screen curtain is active when NVDA starts, a tone will be heard.

I was always happy with NVDA beeping to signify that Screen Curtain was active as NVDA started. It is a bit of a nuisance to need to remember that screen curtain has not automatically started and that I need to use the input gesture I have configured in order to activate the screen curtain.

I've been a long time user of the Focus Highlight Add-On, and it is still installed and active under NVDA 2019.3.

That being said, when I go to the Preferences, Vision Pane there is now a checkbox plus sub-checkboxes for Focus Highlight and I get an error if I check those.

Am I safe in presuming that the Focus Highlight Add-On functions have now been integrated into NVDA and I could drop the Add-On, or is this something else entirely.  I also have no idea why I get an error message when I attempt to check the main checkbox unless it's a conflict between the existing Add-On, which does work under NVDA 2019.3, and NVDA itself for this particular function.

I don't want to file an issue if the answer to this problem is simply getting rid of an Add-On that is no longer needed.

I would rather have it disabled on start up. This is the way mac does things and it is safer that way in my humble opinion. It's not that hard in my humble opinion to make a gesture to turn it on, you can always submit your feedback through via github and see where it gets you. Maybe they can have an option to enable it on start up or have the screen come on at start up etc. Good luck.

I just tried the download button again about ten minutes after my last check and it worked.  I think the problem is caused by the donation page being too busy to let new people use it at the time.

I checked the problem.  The first time I used the download button a little earlier in the day, it worked.  When I checked again, it didn't.  I went to the site twice and it didn't either time.  That was when I had one of the donation selections selected.  When I selected the skip donation this time, the download button worked.  So the problem isn't with the download button.  Perhaps the download process is overloaded with people making donations and you can't be sent there now so nothing happens.  Whatever the case, the problem needs to be looked into.  If the form gets over loaded, then a message should be displayed saying to try again later.
