Re: Two issues with the "Windows 10 App Essentials" add-on

Hi,
Calculator display: with the add-on turned off, if you move to places other than results box, you won't hear anything.
I may need to raise an issue in the tracker for this add-on to announce things like "sine" and "roots" if such shortcut keys were pressed (may not see the light of day until add-on 16.11 at the earliest).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,
I can confirm random occurrence of such an issue in PDF documents
viewed in Adobe DC as well. However, no clue on what's causing or
triggering this behaviour.
Thanks.

This isn't unique to nvda. Apple's voice over has this problem a lot too,
so it has to be something related to the documents, because I've never
found
any pattern on OSX either as to what works, and what doesn't. It may be
fixable, but I've never found a solution myself.

Sheri,

Actually, I ran this PDF document through Abbyyy Finereader and the OCR
cured the spacing problem! So, I will have to ask the authors if this
document was originally run through OCR to generate the PDF that was
sent to
me.

The OCR caused another problem that is not in the original: There are
tables
that contain multiple lines of text within each cell. Abbyyy
Finereader put
all of the text lines onto separate rows and this makes it difficult
to make
sense of the tables.

The log file is pretty obvious. Are you saying the snaps work on your version of xp? I find that hard to believe if true as I've tested the last few snaps on four machines so far which run xp and the same uia errors appear on all of them.

I normally turn off spelling errors in word and then do a spellcheck when I'm ready either from tools or the shortcuts. You can also turn of the indication of spelling errors in nvda if you like.
Grammar errors can be also disabled in word. In most cases I found their idea of the right grammar made documents really boring in any case.

That has to be a local problem as I've had no issues with the installed release version.

Its only the last four or so versions of the next snapshot branch that have had the issue where the mouse handler and get focus look for uia, which xp does not have. I think this regression was added around the same time as more support for Edge browser was merged in. My guess is that the flag detecting xp is either missing or ignored, but I expect they will fix it. Next always has been a bit 'out there' code wise as its mentioned in the preamble on the page you download it from.

Your hanging of the normal version may just be something on your particular machine.
You might want to try looking at the old log when you have rebooted nvda. It may hold the smoking gun. Best set the logging level to debug first though so you see the whole thing as it happens.
The most difficult ones to figure out are those when nvda just stops or vanishes without reason.
I think I am right in saying that the latest RC release on the snapshot page has the same version as the release but allows error bleeps to be heard which might also help to discover what the cause is.
The moral from my point of view has always been to have a portable version on a hotkey link with a forced terminate via a batch file so you can see the old log by using a different nvda version.

do you know whats the problem?
i tried nvda 2016.3 on xp and it hangs for me many time.
specially when my other softwares become not responding, one software
uses many resources of ram or cpu.
and when i open many tabs on firefox.

nvda becomes silent and sometimes even i cant return it via control+alt+n
so, i return to the version 2015.4 of nvda.
it works great for me without any hang.

Two issues with the "Windows 10 App Essentials" add-on

Hello Joseph and all,

I've noticed two issues while using the "Windows 10 App Essentials" add-on:
1. In the "Calculator" app, when I enter digits, NVDA does not announce the change in the display. It announces the change only after I press ENTER to get the result. If I disable the "Windows 10 App Essentials", the issue stops occurring.
2. In the "Mail" app, I cannot read a message only by pressing UP or DOWN arrows. I can read it only with "Say All". If I disable the "Windows 10 App Essentials" add-on, the issue disappears and I can read the message body with UP and DOWN arrows.

Test environment:
- Operating system: Windows 10 Pro (build 14393.222), 64-bit, in Bulgarian with all locale settings set to "Bulgarian".
- NVDA version: next-13616,d4743fcc, in bulgarian.
- "Mail" app version: 17.7167.40817.0, in bulgarian.
- "Calculator" app version: can't find it, but it should be the latest from the apps store.

If you need more information from me in order to be able to diagnose the issue, please let me know and I'll try to help as best as I can.

Best wishes,

This isn't unique to nvda. Apple's voice over has this problem a lot too,
so it has to be something related to the documents, because I've never found
any pattern on OSX either as to what works, and what doesn't. It may be
fixable, but I've never found a solution myself.

Heaven, came across something similar on a webpage this morning - didn't bother saving URL, etc., but, it brought to mind a thought - characterset encoding?

As in, not sure if you can easily check encoding of a specific PDF document that has this issue, but, if you can save it to something like a text file, then in notepad, under save as, etc., you can specify characterset encoding, and maybe just double check that it's set to something like ansi?

This might not make a difference at all, but, for example, doing web development, I have, at times come across issues with things like the alternatives for line break character combinations acorss different operating systems, and thus working with different forms of characterset encoding.

And, yes, unless you can force adobe to use a specific rendering characterset, if it's a protected document, you might not be able to even copy/paste the contents thereof.

Stay well

Hi Joseph

My friend Joe Paton recommends you as someone with knowledge of NVDA.

I would like to use NVDA with Cakewalk Sonar7, a midi and multitrack audio
recording programme (I'm a professional musician).

I'm a newcomer to NVDA, but it reads the basic window, the tracks and
their basic configuration, just fine.
When recording, midi, I need access to the event list, which lists
everything I have recorded on a selected track.
The Event List appears in Sonar's view menu, and opens a separte window
containing all that information. In NVDA, this window remains
obstinately silent, and I don't know what to try to change this.

I know this is a long shot, since you may have no experience of this
software, but Joe's suggestions are normally good ones.

Thanks for your attention
