I've had no problems in xp but be aware some odd errors seem to occur with some add ons in xp but they can be hard to pin down. for example systray elements works, but causes anerror on exit from nvda.

Hello all,

I have a XP computer on which I had NVDA 12.1, which I lost recently.

I have a download package from which you install, but after
installation, it just opens and closes, no speech .

A. any idea's why it will not install correctly and where can I download
another software application package, as could not find version 12.1 on
the NVDA site.

Thanks, Maurice.

Hi, Gene,

It's still in the help menu. I meant to say "help" but said tools by mistake. Yes, the welcome message is still in the help menu. You just hit enter on the help menu and arrow down to "welcome".

Hope this helps.

Hi, everyone,

When I responded to how to bring up the welcome screen, I misspoke. That
option is in the tools menu--not preferences.

Just thought I'd clear that up.

WinTenApps add-on: a new podcast on explaining how the add-on works

Hi all,

For Windows 10 users: A new podcast is now available that goes over Windows 10’s universal apps, UIA and Windows 10 App Essentials add-on:

http://www.nvda-kr.org/files/WinTen%20Universal%20apps_UIA_WinTenApps%20add-on.mp3

Few notes:

·         The podcast is intended for Windows 10 users or people who’d like to write add-ons for universal apps.

·         My apologies for the volume quality.

·         Due to time, I could not go over Cortana listening mode. Will cover this one in a future installment.

·         This is a pilot for a new series of podcasts on universal apps (tentatively named “UWA Universe”) that’ll demonstrate various apps, essential info for new Insider builds and so on.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: How do I get nvda to say welcome at startup

Hi, Marvin,

Hit insert N to go to the NVDA menu. Then hit P for preferences. Arrow down to help and hit enter onit. Arrow down to the welcome and again hit enter. If you want it turned on, check the box. Then tab to the ok button and hit the space bar. To save the change, hit insert control C.

Hope this helps.

I just checked.  The setting is saved permanently when you activate the ok button in this dialog.

Do you know how to use the NVDA help?
You can see the welcome dialog when you wish by opening the NVDA menu, NVDA key n, then typing h followed by l.
As in dialogs in general, you can learn about it by tabbing around.  There is a check box about showing the welcome dialog when you start NVDA.  If you want it shown, check the check box with the space bar.  Then tab to and activate the ok button.
You may then have to save the changes to make the change permanent, but perhaps not.  If the change doesn't stick permanently, ask here.

Re: How to I submit a bug report ticket?

Gene

Also, I don't know if this is relevant to other than the one machine I usually use and I use an old version of NVDA on that machine but at times, something becomes corrupted in my default dictionary.  There is an entry created with the word off in the original word field.  I don't recall if there is anything in the pronounced as field.  The result is that everything is spelled by NVDA until this entry is deleted.

NVDA 2016.3, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit with all updates.
NVDA will accept a speech dictionary entry with an empty pattern field.  After the two ok buttons are clicked, NVDA speaks the replacement string for every word encountered rendering the program useless.
I recovered by running narrator, loading default.dic into an editor and deleting the line with the empty pattern field.
Where do I go to submit a ticket?

Thanks,
George

Re: How to I submit a bug report ticket?

George,

NVAccess handles its bug reports using GitHub.  If you don't have a GitHub account (which is free) you'll have to establish one before filing a bug [issue, in GitHub parlance] report.  The actual page you will use to file a new issue is:  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues

Joseph,

I have signed up on GitHub and responded to issue no. 5890 about signatures in Outlook 2016 not being editable. I cannot see if I have actually replied to the issue

Could you advise on the steps that I should take to find an issue and how to reply to it or add to it, please?

Re: NVDA new install and java

Chris Mullins

Hi
This site allows downloads of historical Java versions. You require an account to do so but there is no cost involved.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/archive-139210.html

You could download the offline installers and run them independently of the Java control panel but JAB is included in the package these days. You can disable it before you send out the computer, go to the ease of access center, select the link 'Use the computer without a display', then uncheck the 'Enable Java Access bridge' box. There is a spurious problem with JAB in that the installer sometimes doesn't copy a particular dll to the correct folder. As you are probably aware, you should install 32 and 64 bit Java versions on a 64-bit system and ensure the following dll's are in the specified folders to ensure JAB will work properly with NVDA and Java Control Center.

WindowsAccessBridge-32.dll should reside in Windows\SysWow64 folder
WindowsAccessBridge-64.dll should reside in Windows\System32 folder

It tends to be the 32 bit dll that goes missing but it's best to check both. If it's not in the correct place, copy it from Program Files x86\Java\Bin to the folder specified above, similarly on the 64 bit side if that dll is missing.

Cheers
Chris

Subject: [nvda] NVDA new install and java

Hello,

I'm using the latest NVDA on a win7 x64 machine. Today requirements were to add java 7 update 45. I did this then I have to disable the auto updater, just relaying what I have to do. In order to do this I have to pull up the java control panel. It doesn't talk with NVDA.
Question, is there a way to get NVDA and java going without installing the access bridge? Reason being i'd just have to pull it when I send the machine out. This NVDA version is temporarily installed on the machine.

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: NVDA Vocalizer lag and Windows 10 lock screen

From my tests, after I switch to Espeak and either restart NVDA or my laptop, the lag disappears, even after I switch back to Vocalizer. As long as I switch back to Espeak before turning off my laptop, the lag won't occur.

Re: NVDA Vocalizer lag and Windows 10 lock screen

From my experiment, I found that if I switch to Espeak, the lag seems to have disappeared, but only after I restarted NVDA or my laptop. Then Vocalizer won't lag anymore after I switch back to Vocalizer. But NVDA still does not read the logon prompt from time to time.

Re: NVDA and XP

hi.
i downloaded nvda version, 2016.3 last week.
install it and its great,
but unfortunately hangs for me specially in using potplayer.
when i want to play a file, after pressing alt+f4 nvda says unknown for me.
i should press its shortcut to work again.
fortunately, nvda supports windows xp service pack two until windows
ten right now.
i am advocate of xp and only use xp.

God bless you.
