Re: gmail with standart view with NVDA

mohammad suliman

hello,

Are the shortcut keys listed in the link supposed to work the same for the inbox.google.com version of the interface? Only asking as it seems to navigate quite a bit differently than the help documentation says it should.

haven't compared them, but, yes, I think they are different.
to get the list of shortcuts, use question mark, (shift + /) while in focus mode. please notice that you need to use brows mode to read the shortcuts dialog properly.

One area I'm finding to be quite problematic is finding the area that contains the different folders within your google account, inbox, starred, sent mail, etc. As per the documentation, it seems that you should be able to move to this area using the tab and shift+tab keys, but this doesn't seem to work for me in the slightest.

yes, you can reach this menu with tab / shift + tab. It is near the top of the page. You need to expand the menu first with enter. It is named "main menu" or something similar.
a much easier way, is to use the dedicated shortcut, which is shift + m, which will jump you directly to this menu.

I am able to move to a list of conversations, messages that appear to be in my inbox, but using the up and down arrows here do not appear to do anything. If I, however, use the right and left arrows, I can move from conversation to conversation, of which a few things are read to me, weather the conversation is read, the subject, number of responses in that conversation and a tiny snippet of the message.

that is correct, left / rite arrow is the way to go to move between conversations. this is somewhat strange at the beginning, but you'll become used to it if you decide to continue with.

Using tab if you're on one of these conversations then takes you to some buttons, delete, etc, while sometimes, using shift+tab, rather than taking you to a previous button in that list of buttons or taking you back to the conversation you were on, jumps you to a previous conversation, just as if you'd used the left arrow.

if you want to expand the thread, hit enter, and then use tab several times to reach the first message of that thread.
a message within a thread can be in 2 states:
* collapsed, in this case, a preview of the message will be displayed. and tab will move to the next message in the thread.
* expanded, in this case, full message content will be displayed. And using tab will go over list of actions you can perform on this message. And, After you go over this list, you will get to the next message.

there are 2 shortcuts to move between messages within threads:
* p, to move to previous message
* n, to move to next message

after you finish with the thread, you can collapse it with escape, and get back to the main messages list.

It may be that I've yet to change some needed setting to make things display correctly with NVDA, but as I see it so far, it seems to be roughly the same confusing interface that's used in other parts of google's interface, one for google voice, etc.

you need to enable full keyboard shortcuts, which you can do from the shortcuts dialog mentioned previously I think.
there is some setting within gmail settings which enables screen reader support, but I don't know what it affects exactly.

I'd love to be corrected and have made sure to stay in focus mode when trying this stuff out, but as with the other parts of google, it seems that using browse mode sometimes actually shows you more information and is easier to navigate.

yes, in most cases you need to use focus mode, however, using brows mode is needed also. Some examples of this: when you are on a message within a thread, you may want to read the message line by line, so using brows mode is convenient in this case.
also, when I hear NVDA says section, usually I know that brows mode is needed. Don't know the exact reason of this.
I tend to think that brows mode is similar to screen review with desktop apps.
in short, you need to find a good balance between using brows and focus modes, so you can get the most out of the product you are using.
and being familiar with the useful shortcuts will help you do so.

hope that helps!
good luck!

Thank you for any tips/ideas.

Tc.

if you have the option to use
inbox.google.com
I recommend it. It is simpler, more productive and considered the next generation tool for managing your e-mail.
and, as the standard view of gmail, it supports ARIA, so, you can use it as you use the desktop mail client: navigating the interface with tab / shift + tab, and many other shortcuts are available.

the link for gmail help for screen reader users:
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/90559?hl=en
it includes info on how to get to this page from within the main gmail interface.

I use gmail standard view to manage my emails.
I've totally dropped the use of a mail client.
Gmail standard view is excellent and Google have done a great job
making it accessible.
A lot of keyboard shortcuts is available.
Read the documentation and the how to use standard view with a screen
reader available when logging in.

Yes, sometimes it does it, but this needs you to have installed office tools which I am given to understand only come with the pro versions and then are only installed if you insist on this or have the dvd/cd to do it later on.

Brian,
When you scan a document, save it as a .tif file then open it with MSFT
photo viewer then open the tool menu and click on send to word. It will ask
to run the optical scanner, click yes.
That is how I do it.

Yes I have used it in the past, very good thing but I no longer have access
to any embosser and have little need to convert stuf from one format to

aah, I have used those but it didn't fix things.
It just kills office.
I have put it back as the version I updated to just didn't work for what the user wanted.
Sadly the issue still exists but I will continue to look for that.

I know with older versions of windows. You can go to the Microsoft site
and get a fix it tool to fix things that got broken while you removed
programs that are there when you get your new computer. Does that same
site still work for windows ten? I can't remember that site I lost it!

For the sighted there is no issue. However there are now Microsoft fixit
programs to put things right, but not looked if one exists for the
version in question. Its some files that get either deregisterd that are
crucial for screenreaders, or the system updates uninstalled demo
versions withough checking if all the files are present, effectively
sending screenreader data to a null device.Ofr so I'm told.

That's awful. You should be allowed to get rid of things like office if
you don’t want it or you have something already. There should never be a
problem if you get rid of things you don’t want.

Internet explorer has to be there if its windows 10, as does edge of
course.

I have to admit I'm not a great fan of chain stores supplied computers
as they often come laden with software that are only there to try to
get the user to pay when the trial runs out, all of which can completely
screw up windows when you attempt to remove them.

it also does not speak the menus for say note pad microsoft word but
yes i could navigate the start menus all apps etc and file manager etc.

But is is like the buffer is some how buggeree even when bringing up a
webpage, it will not speak the contents of it or even speak the menus
when you go to use them.

I have done the usual and uninstalled NVDA and also removed the

even done a system restore but it will only let me go so far back.

I have also done a factory reset on NVdA etc, but am running out of
ideas. By the way i was able to remote into her pc to see what is
happening but looks like the nvda.ini file might be corrupted.

Could i copy a good nvda.ini file to the usb stick and move it

She does have a computer running Xp of which I can email to with a
working copy of NVDA and move it across with a usb stick.

I have tried with a fresh copy of NVDA etc and done it this way, but
looks like it is still having the problem.
I have also renamed the nvda.ini file to old then put nvda onto
it, but it still seems the same.

The lap top has internet access, but is unuseable to use the browser
or emails.

Would copying a working nvda.ini file from a good pc to the other
one then over riding the file maybe fix the problem?

Any ideas apart from a reformat would be good.

Well you may say that, but I think what is happening is that the edit fields do throw this message up and as nvda reads the field some of this gets read just as auto complete is often read. In my view some way for a screenreader to pick up what is being entered without the response from the software running the site is needed here.

The invalid entry is some sort of NVDA problem. It is not the problem of sites and I've often heard it when working with web sites.

As far as sites being too clever, I have no idea what is being referred to. Sometimes, for reasons I don't know, where you are in browse mode may not correspond to where you are in forms mode. That is why I said to stay in forms mode and try to move to and enter information in the correct field. The assumption that these are problems caused by sites has no evidence or foundation. If experimentation or looking at source code can demonstrate that a site's coding is causing problems, then that might be different. If these are normal variants and NVDA doesn't react properly, then that is an NVDA problem. Making assumptions of this sort may make learning to work with such problems less likely as the invalid assumption may encourage not experimenting as much.

Is this what happens? You go to the site and the page comes up where
you enter your GMail address. Then when you activate the next
button, you are taken to the create an account page.
If that is what is happening do the following just as I describe and
see what happens:
In forms mode, type your e-mail address.
Tab once. If you go out of forms mode, go back in. Read the current
line to make sure you are still on the next button. Press the space

Some problem may be causing the create account link to be activated,

Yes, sometimes it does it, but this needs you to have installed office tools which I am given to understand only come with the pro versions and then are only installed if you insist on this or have the dvd/cd to do it later on.

Brian,
When you scan a document, save it as a .tif file then open it with MSFT photo viewer then open the tool menu and click on send to word. It will ask to run the optical scanner, click yes.
That is how I do it.

Where do you get these fixits.
I have had the same issue with an office uinstall and reinstall for a while.
A temperary way I can fix it is by reinstalling adobe reader, but that lasts till the next office update in which case I need to do the entire thing again.

Internet explorer has to be there if its windows 10, as does edge of course.

I have to admit I'm not a great fan of chain stores supplied computers as they often come laden with software that are only there to try to get the user to pay when the trial runs out, all of which can completely screw up windows when you attempt to remove them.

Yes to mozilla fire fox and google chrome. There is no internet
explorer on her version. I went looking for it but is a shop brough
laptop with 10 on it. unless i missed it some where.

it also does not speak the menus for say note pad microsoft word but
yes i could navigate the start menus all apps etc and file manager etc.

But is is like the buffer is some how buggeree even when bringing up a
webpage, it will not speak the contents of it or even speak the menus
when you go to use them.

Hi guys

I was wondering if any one on this list has done a factory reset for
windows 10 with NVDA?

A lady i am trying to help has a copy of Windows 10 on it with the
latest version of NVDA 2016.2.1

When she tries to go into mozilla fire fox which is online she can
see the page has loaded, but NVDA will speak nothing on the screen
it just says unknown. Even tabing etc does nothing.

NVDA will not even speak the menus up the top either.

She gets the same sort of result with mozilla thunderbird. when you
tab it just says unknown etc and the menus do not speak either.

I noticed in some programs NVDA will not speak the menus or may
speak a little of them.

I can tab around the desktop, but down on the taskbar it might say
unknown or when you get to the desktop it will speak what is there.

I have done the usual and uninstalled NVDA and also removed the
settings for the %appdata% section as well. Restarted NVDA etc and
even done a system restore but it will only let me go so far back.

She is running a lap top i think it is and I am not sure if I reset
it to factory defaults does it go back to where you have to specify
your drive etc like I done on a brand new lap top one time or will
it load with Windows? then it is a matter of putting NVDA back onto the
lap top?

I have also done a factory reset on NVdA etc, but am running out of
ideas. By the way i was able to remote into her pc to see what is
happening but looks like the nvda.ini file might be corrupted.

Could i copy a good nvda.ini file to the usb stick and move it
across and fix it this way by over riding the nvda.ini file under
the %appdata% section.

Also, when you ask for someone to help you get that synthesizer, it isn't clear what you are asking.  If you are asking for a full working version, that request is not appropriate for the list unless you are asking where to purchase it.  You would be asking for an illegal copy if you are asking for a fully functional free copy.  There is very likely a demo which may run for a week or two and which is fully functional for the demo period.  if you want to use that for the tutorial, it would be fine to ask where to get the demo.

Hello,

Vocaliser requires you to pay over $100 for the license to use the synthesiser. I don't know why you believe it's necessary to have Vocaliser to make a tutorial. You don't need it. Just because other users have and use the addon and have made tutorials featuring it, doesn't mean you have to get it to make a tutorial.

Also, in my opinion, Vocaliser isn't as expressive as its creators would like you to believe. The voices sound very humanlike, true, but they are also flat as pancakes and don't respond to question marks or exclamation points, and you can forget getting them to pronounce things correctly!

Re: gmail with standart view with NVDA

jeremy <icu8it2@...>

Are the shortcut keys listed in the link supposed to work the same for the inbox.google.com version of the interface? Only asking as it seems to navigate quite a bit differently than the help documentation says it should.

One area I'm finding to be quite problematic is finding the area that contains the different folders within your google account, inbox, starred, sent mail, etc. As per the documentation, it seems that you should be able to move to this area using the tab and shift+tab keys, but this doesn't seem to work for me in the slightest.

It may be that I've yet to change some needed setting to make things display correctly with NVDA, but as I see it so far, it seems to be roughly the same confusing interface that's used in other parts of google's interface, one for google voice, etc. I'd love to be corrected and have made sure to stay in focus mode when trying this stuff out, but as with the other parts of google, it seems that using browse mode sometimes actually shows you more information and is easier to navigate.

Thank you for any tips/ideas.

Tc.

Internet explorer has to be there if its windows 10, as does edge of course.

I have to admit I'm not a great fan of chain stores supplied computers as they often come laden with software that are only there to try to get the user to pay when the trial runs out, all of which can completely screw up windows when you attempt to remove them.

Hi

Yes to mozilla fire fox and google chrome. There is no internet
explorer on her version. I went looking for it but is a shop brough
laptop with 10 on it. unless i missed it some where.

it also does not speak the menus for say note pad microsoft word but
yes i could navigate the start menus all apps etc and file manager etc.

But is is like the buffer is some how buggeree even when bringing up a
webpage, it will not speak the contents of it or even speak the menus
when you go to use them.

the problem lies in the Screenreader.
The website for this software is:
www.windoweyesforoffice.com.

By the way, does the phenominon that you describe happen when using
NVDA with either Internet Explorer or Chrome?

Some problem may be causing the create account link to be activated,

Hi Brian:

The Invalid Entry message through me off at first, but now, I just ignore it.

Yes, I've seen that. I typed in part of the password then I was locked out
because I was taken somewhere else when trying to log in.

This happens sometimes I have found maybe it skips to the wrong field and
only gets part of the password, then it will stop you logging in for a
time.

Hi, Gene,

I just tried what you suggested and it worked. Somehow I was
accidentally locked out of my account. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Hi, Gene,

I don't want to create an account. I want to sign in to the gmail
account I already have.

Press the space
bar if you are. Don't press enter.
Some problem may be causing the create account link to be activated,
not the next button.

Subject: [nvda] having trouble signing into my gmail account

Hi, everyone,

I want to make another lavbel for an email list I joined recently
but
I can't find the place for signing in to my gmail account. I know
my
email address and password but when I try to sign in, I'm taken to
"create an account" instead of the edit box where I'd type in my
password. Please help in this matter.

Thanks in advance.
