Has anyone got a tool to scan to a Word doc?

Brian Crabtree <pandbcrabtree@...>

I scanned a letter into a JPG file and used the OCR add-on, which gave hopeless results.

I then added a section of the image to a Word doc and ran OCR from within Libre Office, with amazing results.

My Epson DX4400 all-in-one printer is old and has a hopeless scanning utility, which will output only to a JPG image, making the process laborious in the extreme.

Has anyone a good suggestion for replacing my Epson scan utility with a free alternative, which will allow output to go directly to a Word document? Or alternatively a better idea altogether, which does not involve spending lots of cash.

I am on Windows 10 but have only an old version of Word and use Libre Office for reading docs. Brian Crabtree

I do have a very long log of this, but I'll only post it or a link to

I suppose what I'm really getting at here, and though its not I'm sure intended this way, is that on quite a number of web sites with free versions, you tend to find yourself pushed toward the paid version or some other software to try or similar sharp practice.
In this case it only needs one extra line to describe how the page works, so how come its still the same as it was last time when this same issue came up for new users who were anxious to try the new version. Interestingly the snapshot page has no such issues, and I'd imagine downloading the RC version on that page is actually downloading a more up to date one than the one on the actual link mentioned.

NVDA and Google Tables

Hello all,

I wanted to work on a translation of an app for Android. The strings are in a file hosted in Google Tables. So, it is something like XLS files for Excel. I tried to figure out how to work with Google Tables, but I couldn't I was using Mozilla Firefox 48 for the purpose and the latest NVDA "next" snapshot. Does NVDA support Google Tables at all? If YES, can you give me some hints as of how to work in Google Tables with NVDA?

Thanks much in advance!

Re: Suggestions

Gene

If you use the command numpad insert numpad times, which I think is numpad asterisk, the object navigator will move to the position of the mouse pointer.  You can then spell the entire item by pressing numpad 8 twice quickly or spell the current word by pressing numpad 5 twice quickly.
The numpad commands for read current letter, move forward and read the next letter and move back and read the previous letter are:
numpad 2, numpad 3, and numpad 1.

I don't know how well reading is done if you read as you do.  Reading is not intended to be done in this way.  You might get much more efficient and pleasant reading if you use the intended method, the read to end command in a document or web page.  Do you know the command and have you used it?

It may be that I'm just misunderstanding what you want, but is this not already available with the flat review commands?

Not sure exactly how this is handled if you're using the mouse to get NVDA's placement to use the flat review commands to read character by character, but I'd be curious if one of the follow cursor settings would allow it to keep track of the mouse's position and then let you review that position with the flat review commands.

Just a thought.

A small intro about the user (me)

Been using NVDA since one year aprox, i am technically blind but have low visión 1/10 so I mainly use the “mosue over” function to read, but sometimes navigate using tab or keys too.

The situation that gives me a small problema is this, for example I am moving the mouse over some text it could be a web page or window file and since I use french, spanish and english sometimes i am not sure of what exactly said, for example a file name “francois Valluard.doc” or web page that talks aobut an autor and i want to know the exact spelling so i can find more info or whatever i need.

To solve this normally I try to use nvda+* to move the cursor to the place or copy the text and paste it into a notepad and use the cursor to read the wors and letter by letter.

My suggestion to solve this problema would be:

I acall “output buffer” to the text that is stored and read when you do some action, for example you move the mouse over some text you leave the mouse there and NVDA starts Reading this buffer, you can pause it with shift or clear this buffer with ctrl.

If would be very very desirable if you can have more control of this outbuffer, handle it with a cursor so you can read Word by Word and spelling.

Another example would be, you are in the file system, Windows explorer, you move the mouse up adn down, and nvda send info to this output buffer and read “ABC.doc”, i would like to get the spelling of this file, if I had control of this output like I said it would be easier.

Let me know if i been not clear.

Thanks, regards,

Martin

Try and hit alt i and see if that works.
Else you need a sightling to click it for you.
However generally the frontend is just the main flash start file and if you run the actual setup which is somewhere else in the same folder then you can bypass it.
