A web site weirdness I need to get some comments on

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

http://www.infosound.org.uk/audio.html

Down near the bottom after the audio files is anarea of text. Part way through this it sounds like the nvda detects an edit area, but its just the sound, its still just text.
I was told by the site owner this text is scrollable by mouse users. I assume then that its a bit like an over sized read only combo box or something, but its not too bad in Firefox but in IE it seems that one can get stuck in it even if you set the options in nvda so it automatically should come out as you go down the page.
Has the author done something strange or is it nvda?
The guy is obviously interested in any ideas as its a simple site for blind and sighted users. I don't see why he does not just put the text in the same way as other text, but I suspect its supposed to be like a window onto a bit of news. If that is so, I feel maybe it might be better at the top logically wise, not part way down.

Hi Sharni,
I guess it is experience, and the will to speedlisten, as on an Eyes
on Success show, he had explicitly specified the necessity to be able
to speedlisten in order to consume maximum information in the quickest
ways possible.
I would strongly encourage to move up bit by bit, 10% or so every so
often, get to a reasonably high speed, and if you feel, make a 5%
decrement sometimes, but for the most part, try to cope up with
increasing speech rates, and you will eventually make a fair listening
pace. I had to make a conscious effort of increasing my speech rate to
get to where I am, and still do it consciously, and I am assuming that
Jamie might have to some extent, had to be proactively boosting his
listening skills as well.
Thanks.

Gretg,
I looked in the general prefferences and there's a checkbox that says play sound when starting NVDA. You could uncheck that box which would turn the sound off.

Hi.

I don't know how uninstalling CCleaner could have caused this. Try uninstalling speakDropbox and then installing the latest version again. You don't need to manually delete folders or anything like that. The goal of reinstallation is to get it to re-add the dll files that handle speech in the hopes that'll straighten it out. Another possible explanation would be that it thinks you have other screen readers running too, although in that case it probably would still default to JAWS as highest priority. Have you rebooted the computer yet?

Question about NVDAs sound affects

Greg Wocher

Hello,

Is it possible to turn down the volume of the sound affects? The reason I ask is that I received a tip from BlindBargains that if I turn down the volume in NVDAs preferences it might help with the crackling in the Code Factory Eloquence. I did this and it did work. After doing this I need to turn up my computers volume a bit to hear NVDA. This makes the volume of the synth okay but the volume of the sound affects is now very loud and jarring.

Regards,

Greg WOcher

Hi all,
Just quickly chiming in - I am using ESpeak NG very comfortably and
alike ESpeak with the following voice configurations:
Variants: Steph/Steph_test 1/Steph 2/Steph 3 (mostly similar)
Speech Rate: 40% with rate boost enabled, though I prefer reading
important or academic notes at 30% with rate boost enabled, but can go
up to 50% or so in places (such as a fast paced game) with whose text
messages I am acquainted or familiar to some extent already, or if
necessary
Pitch: 40
Inflection: 50
I first heard ESpeak's Max variant voice close to three years ago, and
began using it and NVDA full time almost two years ago, and my above
speech settings have been going on since a year perhaps. I hope to
build my listening speed too to compete with Jamie and others at some
point in time in the future, as Jamie uses ESpeak's Max at 55% with
rate boost enabled always, as I am informed through some of his public
interviews/podcasts. :D grin
Back to the topic though, I have found not even the subtlest of
annoyances with ESpeak NG, perhaps I find it a tad bit more
responsive, could be a misconception though, as ESpeak already was
incredibly responsive.
Thanks.

Hello,

I purchased the lower quality version not to far back. I found a big
issue with this synth. When moving thru words character by character
Acapela will not read the vowels. It reads them just fine when either
doing a say all or reading by word but not when reading character by
character. I just wanted to make others aware of this when looking at
this synth. I did not purchase the higher quality so I am not sure if
that version has the same issue or not.

Thanks Joseph,

I’m glad I’m not alone. I ahve seen some improvement when tabbing
around
some web sites but unfortunately, not many. If the site has a lot of
places that would trigger focus mode, it doesn’t tend to work.

I’m all ears for any ways to deal with this as I’m effectively shut out

Subject: [nvda] Issue with focus mode in 2016.2

Apologies in advance for the length of this post. I downloaded the
latest
version of NVDA the day it came out and began to notice right away that
I
was having a problem with focus mode when opening web pages.

My sistem is as follows:

Windows 7 latest updates
Web browsers: Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox

All of my other programs have no issues with NVDA.

Here’s what happens when I open a web page.

Nothing is announced until I alt-tab away from the page. then the
title
of the page is announced but the word “document” is after the title of
the web page.

Focus mode appears to be on.

Here’s what I’ve done.

1. toggled Focus Mode with NVDA-space. with no effect and no speech or
sound with each toggle 2. Hit escape several times with no speech,
audio
or change.
3. Made sure the numlock key was off, toggled it on and off again.
This
function spoke but had no effect on Focus Mode.
4. Left the web page and tried focus mode in another app, Outlook
2007,
worked as normal.
5. Tried both browsers, same result, Focus Mode locked.
6. Updated Windows7, IE and Firefox. Restarted computer, no change.
7. downloaded and stalled a new version of NVDA over the old one.
Restarted computer, no change.
8. Removed NVDA and reinstalled the version I’d downloaded, all
mentioned
versions are current btw. No change.
9. I even tried Window-Eyes to see if it was my computer. No,
Window-Eyes
worked fine on both browsers.

I then looked at the settings for browsers but didn’t understand
several
of them. I tried toggling them on/off and testing web pages but no
change.

Any idea what’s going on here?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

hi

I all ways used the default nvda max english voice, I am disappointed in the changes made to espeak in nvda I think starting with nvda 2015 or may be as far back as 2014. Were the changes made to espeak by nvda devel or the creator of espeak. I would like a choice in nvda setup to be able to pick witch espeak to install. I feal the need for speed quite freequently and to have that fluttering sound in there when the check box for rate boost is checked so I can get up to a 600 to 800 words per min is disruptive. I am still trying to get used to it.

windows 7 x64 pro clean install
nvda installed using default settings except for speed set to 100

Can I replace the espeak n g with the older one by copying the old one
over the new one in the program files x86 \ nvda folder?
Thanks for any help!
