The issue is simply that NVDA does not speak the erroneous word in the spell checker in Outlook 2016. The rest of the dialog is read out. Also the proposed correction is read out in both focus mode and review mode.

Quentin,

The keystroke NVDA+b is the only tool that gives me the erroneous field.

It starts at the top of the dialog and, when it comes to “Not found in dictionary” if repeats this twice followed by “alt plus” and then repeats “not found in dictionary” once more followed by the erroneous text and then continues on to read to the bottom of the dialog.

This is the only time when the erroneous word is spoken. It is not available when I use the numpad to review the text even though NVDA+b has spoken it. Yet, the offered correction is available in all modes of review.

Any ideas?

Use the review cursor to read the previous text to get the misspelled word, and you can also read forward further down the pane to get the dictionary meaning of replacement words.

To read the context of the spelling error, the best option is to press escape to go back to the document, read the line / sentence / etc, and press F7 to go back to spell check again (or F6 to move back to the pane).

Here's the section of the User Guide on the review cursor: http://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#ReviewingText

I'm almost finished writing the Word for NVDA course and included a topic on several methods for using the spell check, including activities.  The Word course isn't available yet although the basic training for NVDA course is which covers the review cursor etc - see: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Hello fellow list members,

I am using Office 2016 under Windows 10 with NVDA 2016.1.

Since I recently upgraded to Office 2016, I find that NVDA does not speak some of the essential fields in the Spell Checker. Particularly, the text that has not been found in the dictionary. The heading is there but I cannot see what text is being held. When I hit tab, NVDA speaks the suggested correction. Sometimes, I can guess which text is being amended but not always.

If I press F7 whilst editing the message, NVDA will track the spell check pointer and bring the focus to the erroneous word. If I press escape, interrupting the spell check, I usually find the focus point on the erroneous word. I have the Spell check set to activate automatically when I press send, just in case I have missed a typo as I normally do!. In this case, if I interrupt the Spell Check in order to see if I can see which word is causing the problem, I land at the beginning or end of the document but nowhere near the erroneous word.  So, I thought I would ask my helpful friends on the list if anyone can suggest anything that I can do about getting the spell check to speak the erroneous text while running?

Please help.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi Christo

This is Wally.

I hope you are well there.

I am trying.

The simplest way to deal with headers is to press alt+n+h and then navigate within the dialogue. In that way, you are sure the screen reader will respond without problems.

My JAWS sometimes freezes as well when I try and use the key combination sequence as you mentioned.

Remember, I am using JAWS 16 latest build, of course NVDA 16.2.1 in word 2010 and 2013.

It just happens that the screen reader sometimes does not behave as one expects.

Hope this may help.

Enjoy NVDA.

If you do the sequence to slow it will not focus in the right place. I tried it a little slow then quicker and when done quicly this time it landed in the same places a few times where I could edit the header. Once it has been edited and entered, then the escape key done It seems or is working correctly. and lands in the right spot to edit it. Doing the sequence slow will do as you said before.

By the way I am using nvda 2016.2 and word 2010 and windows 10.

Re: Possible keyboard echo issues, can anyone confirm or deny, please?

Gene

By the keyboard issue, I now know you mean the issue of reading the uncorrected text.  But you already know you corrected it so why go through all the trouble and time of uninstalling the old program, installing the new program, importing the account or creating it, and learning the new layout?  If you want to do so, that's your decision but that's a lot of time to spend to correct what I consider to be a very small problem.  And if you want to be sure you corrected a word as you intend, just move back to hear it with control left arrow.
The cursor will be at the beginning of the word, as I expect you know and what is actually on the screen will be spoken.  then jump to the end of the word with control right arrow.  You should be back where you started.  So if you jump back a word after you write it and space, using control right arrow will place you in position to write the next word.

Also, one person has indicated that in the anniversary edition of Windows 10, the mail app works much bbetter.  It might make more sense to wait until you are upgraded, download a current snapshot of NVDA and try the app.  I don't know what there may be to learn about using it but it can't be difficult.

Subject: Re: [nvda] NVDA not reading Spell Checker fields

Any ideas?

All the best,

Cearbhall

Subject: [nvda] NVDA not reading Spell Checker fields

Cearbhall

Re: [finding styles in word 2016

Quentin Christensen

Hi Cearbhall,

Firstly, if you just want to set the current style to Heading 2, you can use the keystroke of control+alt+2.  You can also use control+alt+1 for Heading 1 and control+alt+3 for heading 3.  Shortcut keys for Heading 4 and downward aren't set, however you could if you wanted.  You can however, select text and press alt+shift+right arrow to go down one heading level or alt+shift+left arrow to go up one heading level.

Now back to the Apply Styles toolbar you are using.  When you press control+shift+s in Word, it opens the Apply Styles toolbar.  The focus starts in the "Style name" edit (which is actually a combo box - you can either type in here or use the arrows to select existing styles).

The currently selected style in the style name edit SHOULD be whatever the style of the current text is, so if you move to text that is in the heading 2 style, that's what should be selected.

Generally I've found that works fine, although interestingly, in testing this for you this morning, I found several times that the style name edit is originally blank.  It seems to do this whether NVDA is running or not - perhaps a recent minor update to Office has changed something or something is going weird on this system (it works fine on my other Windows 10 / Office 2016 system) - it didn't do that when I wrote the styles section in Word with NVDA module.

As a workaround if it happens to do the same for you, the "Styles" toolbar, which is accessed by control+alt+shift+s (the same as apply styles but with the alt included as well), seems to read fine although you need to press F6 to get to it.  As an added bonus however, you can bring up the context menu for say, heading 2, and select all text in your document of that style (the kind of thing on the one hand you might never use, but if you need it, you'd find really handy).

Kind regards

Quentin.

An online web metronome for NVDA users being musicians

Dejan Ristic

It was this evening that I discovered an online metronome used via any browser.

Here it is:

www.webmetronome.com

It is highly accessible to NVDA.

I'm going to use it in the future during my accordion practice.

I hope you will enjoy it.

Re: Possible keyboard echo issues, can anyone confirm or deny, please?

Quentin Christensen

Can you confirm please:

1) Is this happening in any other program (eg notepad, Word etc)
2) Is the text actually being corrected (ie if you copy the text into say notepad, is the letter you thought you deleted there or not)
3) Can you perform the same correction in other programs (eg notepad)

And yes, if anyone else is running the same setup and confirm whether they are also having this issue, that would be great.

Regards

Quentin.

Hi All,
First, I can not be sure of this, as I have not played with it, so if this is  normal, please forgive me. But, if it is normal, it certainly is annoying. But, in case it is not normal, here's what's happening.
I have installed windows live mail 2009, the one with the menus, on windows 10. NVDA 2016.2.1, I think. I have tried this with the acapella demo, and a few others. Now, say you're writing a message, and you make spelling mistakes. For example, instead of an  l, you write a k. No problem, you backspace. But, at last, when you finish the word, and,  press space, speech will say hekloo or helklo, or wherever you got the k instead of the l, instead of hello.  In other words, despite the fact that I have deleted k, the k is still pronounced by speech. I've not tried eSpeak yet, but, honestly, when I played with outlook 2010 a little yesterday, I can't recall outlook doing the same, and I have to admit, if it has, I'm pretty sure others would have raised it by now.
So my questions:
1) Is this a bug, or normal?
2) Is there some sort of a work around, other than changing clients?
Thanks!

Re: EDITING HEADERS IN OFFICE 2010

Kenny Dog <hurrikennyandopo@...>

Hi Christo

If you do the sequence to slow it will not focus in the right place. I tried it a little slow then quicker and when done quicly this time it landed in the same places a few times where I could edit the header. Once it has been edited and entered, then the escape key done It seems or is working correctly. and lands in the right spot to edit it. Doing the sequence slow will do as you said before.

By the way I am using nvda 2016.2 and word 2010 and windows 10.

We have a problem with editing a header in MS Word. If you press the Office 2010 sequence, ALT, N, H, E, NVDA falls silent. It refuses to speak even after you pressed escape. If you make use of the 2003 sequence, ALT+V, H, there is no problem.

Could someone please assist us?

Re: EDITING HEADERS IN OFFICE 2010

Kenny Dog <hurrikennyandopo@...>

Hi Christo

I have the same version of microsoft word. I also tried the same sequence for word 2010, but not the earlier version.

I can confirm what you said for the 2010 version. some times it works and other times it does not. It seems to be on how quick or slow I do it wheather it wants to do it or not.

the word around that seem to work is a couple of extra steps.

Press the ALT key + letter N, then H. This will land you on a bland header. Shift tab a couple of times until you get to the part where it says edit the header then press the enter key make your changes then press enter key then the escape key. Doing it this way I can edit the header and change it if I want to .

I am learning my self how to do it so have been putting together a basic tutorial on using the basics of word and putting in a header and footer and editing them is part of it.

Hopefully the above helps.

I did not try it with a master snapshot it might of been fixed in that?:?
