I am struggling with several things on the new Facebook design, including discovering this morning when I tried to share a post that there doesn't seem to be any way to do that using NVDA!

Something else I tried to do today when I realised I couldn't share the post was to copy and paste the text I wanted to share into a message to two of my friends. I started a new group message to the two people and then pasted the text into the message. I activated the Send button and got the error that I needed to address the message to somebody! Even though the two people's names were still listed as being recipients!

In the old layout (and I'm using the mobile version of FB on my laptop and Firefox browser) I often used to use a custom feeling. I used to type in the feeling search field and activate the Search button, and the result would come up as a link I could use to add it to my post. There is still a search field but no search button ... so I assumed I'd type my feeling in the text field and the result would appear in some sort of list ... but it doesn't! There are buttons for Clear and Cancel but that's it. I've looked through the list of NVDA+F7 elements to see if there's anything disguised as a link, a form field or heading etc, but there's nothing. In fact all of the 120-or-so "standard" feelings like happy, confused, goofy, angry don't show up in any of the NVDA+F7 elements ... in the page itself they are not reported as clicable elements, even though they function that way.

In the old layout I could choose from I think it was 6 reactions to comments on my posts ... I could react with like, love, care, haha, sad and angry. Now it seems that Like is the only reaction available.

If any NVDAers have figured out ways to do these things I'd be hugely grateful for guidance ... I'd post on FB about it with the feeling: overjoyed! :)

locked Possible to purchase Microsoft outlook separately?

Daniel McGee

Hi all

Was just wondering ,is it at all possible to purchase Microsoft Outlook separately, as a stand-alone app?

I already have office 2019 student addition put on my windows 10 system. When I brought it two years ago. So obviously, it would be silly to buy the business version of office 2019. Just to get outlook on the machine. Hence why I am inquiring if outlook can be purchased as a stand-alone app to be used with my microsoft account.

Thanks for any input on the matter.

Accidents of history, really.  NVDA started life as a "minimal" core function screen reader that allowed easy extensibility via add-ons.   As time has gone by it's become a far less "minimal" core, often via the absorption of what had started out life as an add-on into the core functionality.

But when the functionality exists as an add-on, the pressing need for it to "become core" is greatly minimized.  So, often, novel core functions will be created rather than integrating add-ons into the core itself.

It's really no different than JAWS in that respect.  There are lots of things that still are done via scripts in JAWS that are analogous to the things done in add-ons in NVDA.

End users, particularly those new to screen readers, need to be made aware of the existence of these scripts/add-ons out there, both official and home grown (but most often shared with whoever needs/wants them).  There are all sorts of arcane tricks that are handled via these that will likely never be integrated into core functionality.

Why not make that suggestion on the github so the developers can track the issue, and or suggestion? I always tell people to do this. You can discuss here but also put the issue or suggestion in the tracker as well, that way people can comment on that easier as well.

Re: Copy Spoken Text

Luke,

Check on GitHub and see if that's already been proposed in an issue, and if not, create a new feature request issue noting just what you've said here.

There have been a number of add-ons that have had their functionality integrated into the NVDA core over time.  One I use, Focus Highlight, is one of those, but there have been a number of others.

I'm not seeing anything with a very quick and dirty search, but I also may not be using whatever "magic search terms" would pull this up.  Someone else may know if such an issue already exists off the top of their heads.  If so, please post the link to it in GitHub.

Can you test any of this on facebook mobile? I use nothing but that, and love it, and it's easy on the system, amd loads fast. I believe I can react, I just don't. And the keyboard shortcuts are inside the links.

Hi Sascha,

Maybe I can clarify what I was describing a little bit. There are issues with both the "How are you feeling" part of writing a post, and giving a reaction to somebody's comment on one of my posts. They are not the same issue.

With the How am I Feeling part when I write a post, it has a list of about 120 predefined options, with the list usually starting with Happy and continuing with feelings like Sad, Angry, Goofy, Cute, Confused, Meh. If I wanted to say I was feeling something not in that list, such as flamingoed, I could type that in the search box, press the search button and it would appear as an option that I could select and my post would say I was feeling flamingoed. Now there is still a search box, but that only seems to filter the list of 120-or-so pre-defined feelings. If I type chill into that search box, all other entries in the list are hidden and I can select chill. If I type flamingoed then nothing at all appears where the list previously was, but there is no way to select flamingoed as my chosen feeling.

The other reaction is when people have commented on a post I have written. The only reaction I seem to be abel to give is to Like it. It used to be possible to react with Like, Love, Care, Haha, Sad and angry. When somebody  else writes their own post, it is indeed possible to react with those options (though angry seems to be off the menu now). To react to somebody else's post there is a Like button and then a link for Other Reactions, which is that list. when I write a post and somebody comments, I can Like it, but there is no Other Reactions option. Often one of my friends will comment something humourous, and I want to react with a Haha, but have to react with Like and then comment Haha.

As with all Facebook changes, usually things that aren't working correctly get ironed out within a week or two. In case it's not something that Facebook has messed-up for screen reader users, I'd love to know if any NVDA users have figured out how to do these two things :)

Many thanks. Your approach of enabling focus mode and then tabbing to the checkbox and enabling it worked. Sadly, the partner program is not supported in India which is where I live so that’s that for now.

When that happens to me, I tab until I get back to where I was. You could also try f6.

I don't use Edge and I don't know why you have the other problem. But try f6 when you have a problem in WE. Try f6 more than once if necessary. It sounds to me as though you are somehow moving to a tool bar and f6 will move you to different structures in the window, including the document part of the window, where you want to be.

Re: Unable to share links on FB

Sascha Cowley

To write a post:
On desktop (facebook.com), there is a heading 3 "Create a post", and below that are buttons to create posts, add activities etc. On mobile (m.facebook.com) (at least the JavaScript version I now get with Firefox), the button to create a post is above the "Stories" level 2 heading.

I can't work out how to share posts, either. 😕

I am able to access the alternative reactions on facebook.com and m.facebook.com just fine. I am not sure if you are talking about something else, though.

Re: Unable to press the continue button when trying to join the medium partner program

Sascha Cowley

I was able to tick the box by entering focus mode ([NVDA] + [SPACE]) and tabbing to the checkbox (it comes before the link in the tab order) and pressing [SPACE]. The button was then enabled and I could proceed.

Re: Making NVDA profiles in diffrent languages

Sascha Cowley

Given changing the NVDA language (not just speech or Braille language) requires restarting NVDA, the only way I can think of doing this is to create completely new configuration folders (not just profiles) for each NVDA language you wanted, and creating shortcuts to them using the `-c` flag to specify the configuration folder. You should then be able to alter all settings of these differently configured shortcuts as desired. You would, of course, have to quit NVDA and re-launch the differently configured version each time you wanted to change NVDA language.
