Uh oh.  That's the official site.  For sure.  When I went to the old site http://cdexos.sourceforge.net it redirected me to that cdex.nu site which looks exactly like the old cdex source forge site.  Maybe our hopes are dashed and the entire project has been highjacked?  It's been at least 10 years since the last upgrade as far as I know.

The SAPI version you can buy sounds as it should.  it's the add on you can purchase that has the annoying artifacts.  I've seen contradictory reports about whether the SAPI 5 version is responsive enough in Windows 8 and higher   it is claimed by some people, that SAPI 5 is not implemented properly in Windows 8 and 10 and that SAPI 5 voices in general are not responsive and that that is the problem.  But I've also seen reports that the SAPI voice works well.  The only way you are likely to know is to try a demo.

Brian, which version of outlook express for win10 are you talking about?

Asking since have come across a couple of variants - here's mention of one, but, not sure if this is what you meant?

if nvda is running and refuse to display messages or indeed allow entry
of messages. The reasons for this are unclear but have been going on
even in windows xp at times even when the preview pane is disabled.
My quick and dirty fix is not really a fix but reboots Outlook express
into the same identity that has stopped working properly. You put this
batch file in the working directory of Outlook Express. the one with the
exe file in it, and call the batch file from a desktop shortcut instead
of its normal entry shortcut.
Here is the batch file.

@echo off

taskkill /f /im msimn.exe
ping -n 5 127.0.0.1>nul

start MSIMN.EXE
exit

This then reboots or runs Outlook Express either in its default identity
if its the first time you ran it, or in the current one if its stopped
working correctly as above.
For the curious, it forcibly terminates Outlook Express and everything
else it has running, then waits for the dust to settle, and reboots it
in the same identity.

Hope it helps.
I'm sure this is due to an interaction with nvda, but nobody seems to
have found the culprit in some years now, so at least this is a work
around.

Re: PDF to Word conversion tool

Brian Gaff noted:  "I noted in a recent test of Windows 10 that it tries to open pdfs, in Edge with a complete loss of anything accessible at all."

Well, yes, the default program for opening PDFs in Windows 10 is the Edge browser.  It has that capability, but we all know that it has major accessibility issues.  It seems that the trend in general has been toward opening PDFs in web browsers, which I personally hate.  I tweak things such that PDFs open in my PDF viewer of choice and not elsewhere.

It's a simple matter to change the default app for opening PDF files to anything you wish it to be.  That's one of the major advantages of Windows through the years, it is extremely customizable if you don't like the defaults.

Re: GMail, PDF and NVDA

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors, including the word processing program you're using.

Libre Office Writer can open a PDF file without the need for any copy and paste.  I'm not sure it can save it as a PDF, but I do know it can open one from its native format.  More recent versions of MS-Office can do this, too.

If you're using a word processor that can do this then the easiest thing is to simply save the PDF attachment to your drive and then open it within the word processor itself.
