Re: Reading PDFs in Edge Seemingly Broken
For anyone who is of the same opinion I am, and cannot stand dealing with PDFs within browser windows anyway, it is possible to make any browser open them using the system PDF reader you have installed on your system and set as the default. I never like dealing with PDFs except in a dedicated PDF Editor or reader. Instructions follow.
Making Chromium-based Browsers (Chrome, Brave, New Edge, etc.) Open PDFs in Your System Reader
At this point close out of settings to save the changes you’ve made Now when a PDF file is triggered, it will download via your browser just like any other file. If you have things set up to go to your Downloads folder, that’s where it will be placed. If you have the browser set up to ask you where to save it, you’ll get the save dialog. Once the download is finished, the typical status comes up on the bottom of the screen indicating it’s complete, and giving you options of what to do if you activate the button for that file. If you select the downloaded PDF file at the bottom of the window, then choose Open, then the file will open in a separate Reader window. If you also activate the “Always open files of this type” option from then on any PDF file will not only automatically download, but automatically open in the PDF Reader you have set as the default one on your system. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Power is being told you're not loved and not being destroyed by it. ~ Madonna

I am not having difficulty reading PDF documents in Edge. However, I am having trouble with the shortcut keys. Alt + S for settings alt + H for help and so on. None of them seem to work. I have to use the tab key to access the tool bar to get at any of these items. I wonder if anyone else is having this difficulty.

Of overall importance, the voice that it uses. I’ve a friend here in Tampico, who wasn’t convinced of what NVDA had to offer, until he came across the Valeria Akapela voice; now he says if he could have that voice for life, he’d switch fulltime to NVDA.

Hi guys,
Yes, I do have friends who use NVDA on a daily basis but still, I wanted to get some other points of you as well.
What do you think is essential for a user to have to be able to use NVDA comfortably on a daily basis?
I appreciate everyone’s help and I hope you stay safe and have an amazing evening/day/night.

Can you please give an example? EG what web page or program, what you pressed, and exactly what was said? If you need, you can press NVDA+N, then the second option is "Speech viewer" which will open a window displaying exactly what NVDA reads. Regards Quentin.

Re: Ocr with nvda.
Quentin Christensen
If you are using the add-on (because you are using Windows 7 or 8) then you use object navigation, if you are using the inbuilt OCR (as covered in the user guide) then once you have recognised the text, you can use your regular navigation and reading keys. Here is the link to the User Guide: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#ContentRecognition Basically, navigate to the object in question - a graphic on a webpage, or open a PDF which is inaccessible, etc. Next press NVDA+R (the NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK depending on your settings) then use your regular reading and navigation keys to read the result (eg arrows or NVDA+down arrow / NVDA+A to read all). When done, press ESCAPE. I wrote a piece for our In-process blog awhile ago which has exact steps and an image to practice on if that helps: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-5th-october-2017/ (it also covers both the add-on and the in-built Windows 10 OCR). Regards Quentin.

Reading PDFs in Edge Seemingly Broken
Sascha Cowley
Hi All,
It would seem that, as of Edge version 81, reading PDFs with NVDA is broken. The contents of the document can still be found using the navigator, but the document is reported as being blank in browse mode. The issue seems to have been fixed in Edge version 83, but this is still 2 versions (6-12 weeks) away from becoming a stable release, and much can change in that time. Regards, Sascha

Re: Ocr with nvda.
from nvda user guide:

9. Content Recognition When authors don't provide sufficient information for a screen reader user to determine the content of something, various tools can be used to attempt to recognize the content from an image. NVDA supports the optical character recognition (OCR) functionality built into Windows 10 to recognize text from images. Additional content recognizers can be provided in NVDA add-ons. When you use a content recognition command, NVDA recognizes content from the current navigator object. By default, the navigator object follows the system focus or browse mode cursor, so you can usually just move the focus or browse mode cursor where desired. For example, if you move the browse mode cursor to a graphic, recognition will recognize content from the graphic by default. However, you may wish to use object navigation directly to, for example, recognize the content of an entire application window. Once recognition is complete, the result will be presented in a document similar to browse mode, allowing you to read the information with cursor keys, etc. Pressing enter or space will activate (normally click) the text at the cursor if possible. Pressing escape dismisses the recognition result. 9.1. Windows 10 OCR Windows 10 includes OCR for many languages. NVDA can use this to recognize text from images or inaccessible applications. You can set the language to use for text recognition in the Windows 10 OCR settings dialog. Additional languages can be installed by opening the Start menu, choosing Settings, selecting Time & Language -> Region & Language and then choosing Add a language. To recognize the text in the current navigator object using Windows 10 OCR, press NVDA+r.
