Subject: [nvda] planning on writing a guide on browsing the web efficiently with NVDA

Hi everyone.

As the subject says, I am planning to write a guide on how to browse the web more efficiently with NVDA.

As you all know, NVDA has a ton of single navigation commands to navigate to different webpage elements, E.G. Landmarks, headings, block quotes, links, the newly introduced groupings and articles etc. However, there doesn't seem to be much info in laypersons terms about what these elements are, much less how you can use them to  get around the web quicker. There's loads of dev info on w3c, but nothing much for your average screen reader user navigating the web.

I would post it on the community wiki as frankly I'm only one woman and don't know everything.  So it'd be a community effort much like the JAWS to NVDA guide, which I did most of the initial work on.

What do you all think of such a project? Would you find it useful?

Also, if a similar thing already exists, I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

All the best,

Kara

Hi, Kara:

That’d be very useful. I know some commands, but not all. Having them in a tutorial (= in one place) for quick reference would be great. Thanks for your initiative and best of luck with the community effort.

With mp3 Direct Cut running and in focus, just hit the "R" key. It will say something like recording is ready to start.  Then you just use the spacebar to start and stop recording.

Press the windows key.  After you hear start window, press escape. This brings chrome back to focus and you will land on the form field

atguys support usually takes 2 or 3 days to respond, just be patient, or email them again. As far as updates, you may get 1 or 2 updates per year, if that. It's just a tts or speech synthesizer, there really isn't much to update unless NVDA changes something on its end forcing a required update to speech addons.

Download, and if it is the *.exe file, install it, and copy the lame-enc.dll in to mp3 direct cut directory.

Forgive me, I just subscribed to the group.
In the initial welcome to the group message it says you can mute messages by clicking on the link in an individual message. But when I did that, it went to the web and wanted me to log in and all this stuff, and when I did, it just showed me the topics from different groups.
But, so I am still not sure how to mute messages?
Could someone give me detailed instruction or example?

Thanks,
Anna

Re: NVDA settings won’t open

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi

is nvda speaking at all or loaded?

If nvda is not on use the alt key + ctrl key + the letter N to start up nvda.

If it starts then stops talking try the windows key and up arrow key etc to see if it keeps on talking?

I am wondering when it went to update and downloaded did it say it was ready to install? If so when you go to install it or upgrade it a UAC screen might come up which you will have to say yes to or use alt key + y and at the end it should start up again.

If it did not get pass the UAC screen it might not have upgraded.

The other possibility is after it down loaded some how the file might of got corrupted and but did you say it went to install but was slow?

Trying to work out where you are in the process.

If you have the latest update from nvaccess you could also install it over the top of the other one and could use narrator to do that.

Then after it has been done turn off narrator.

This is what I tried:
1. Press enter on NVDA desktop icon.
It would make an ascending noise and then immediately after a descending noise, and nothing at all opened or happened or anything.
2. Pressed windows key to open start menu and typed NVDA into search and pressed enter.
Same result as number 1.
3. Pressed windows key to open start menu and arrowed down to NVDA, pressed enter.
Nothing happened.
4. Pressed windows key to open start menu, arrowed down to NVDA- explore. It opened my computers explorer where my files are- that doesn’t help.
5. Pressed alt key when NVDA desktop icon was selected.
6. Pressed spacebar when NVDA desktop icon was selected.
7. Pressed insert+F11 for system tray, nothing happened.
8. Pressed Fn+F11, nothing happened.
9. I would have tried pressing applications key with NVDA desktop icon selected, but my new computer doesn’t have one.
I’m guessing it wouldn’t have worked anyway.

So how do I get into the settings or preferences or whatever it is called to change a couple things like speech rate and such.

Additionally, is there a shortcut key or hot key (not sure what it’s called) to decrease/increase speech rate without going into settings?

I still want to go into settings, but for future reference would like to know. I searched the web but didn’t find a key command for that.
I found a list of NVDA commands, but speech rate control was not on there. I wonder is there a better reference list of commands?

Thanks for all your help.
