Re: NVDA 2019.3.1 and External Soundcard and Firefox

Hi

There was a bug that in most of the browsers would say unknown or pane

The context menu would not be spoken andother weird stuff including down on the running applications part of the task bar you would hear the icons spoken but in this case it would say unknown as you arr owed through them.

Even if you tab in the browser etc is it just still saying unknown etc so no quick navigation keys can be used.

Does it happen in other browsers?

for them to see what might be happening it might be a good idea in general settings in nvda to change the log in level to debug and then save the settings.

Restart nvda then go back into the browser and try and do the usual.

Then use the nvda key + f1 key to bring up the log viewer then save it to the computer.

It might be a good idea to say what is happening as it might be a new ticket or you can add to a ticket for it to be fix

By the way the following web page might help you if you go to make a ticket it can be found under the trouble shooting section at http://accessibilitycentral.net/nvda%20audio%20tutorials.html

There is a email address that it can be emailed to but can not remember it at hand. If you have a email with quentins details you might be able to email him. from nvaccess.

Hi Gene

apologies, in my previous message I had a brainstorm and said that NVDA

It seems to say "Unknown" on all the pages I have loaded.

I have also removed all the Mozilla and NVDA files after uninstalling
the programs, and then I have reinstalled them with no luck.

And now I also have this problem that NVDA will not see the external
sound card.

NVDA works perfectly with Chrome.

I am not sure I understand your question about the Taskbar. Firefox
shows up on there.

It looks like you don't need the language package if you don't install any of the voices. Maybe they are all included in this add on or something.  I'm still not clear about this but I'm keeping the English Language package enable as everything is working fine here.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Re: backup speech dictionaries

Gene

No one has mentioned doing a Windows search.  This is important to know both that it exists and how to use it.  It is also something a lot of people would use instead of other methods.  If you search for speechDicts using Windows search you will find the folder.  You don't have to open it unless you want to.  You can copy it to the clipboard in the search results.

I'm not talking about using the start menu search.  I'm talking about Windows search, control f to get to the edit field when in the list of files and folders.

Its probably the same or just about the same from Windows 7 through Windows 10.  Type speechDicts and then tab to the list of results, which will grow longer if more results are found over time.

Close the search with alt f4 when finished.

Don't press enter after typing the search.  Just tab to the list.  The search begins automatically when you type what you are searching for.

You can just type %appdata%\nvda into the run dialog and get there.

There's also Explore NVDA user configuration directory in the NVDA folder in the Start menu.

Absolutely true.  And a great piece of information.   I'm just not presuming that most will be in a context where environment variables are at play when looking for it.

If you're trying to find the folder I noted earlier, and that %appdata% would get you to, in File Explorer you must have set hidden files and folders to be displayed, otherwise the AppData folder is hidden.

In this case I was referring to those that are and who might make an announcement here, but you bring up a very important point.

I have been disappointed, sorely disappointed, at how little documentation of any sort is available for a great many of the add-ons on both the official and under development pages.  I truly cannot fathom why anyone would dedicate the time and effort, which is substantial, to creating a tool for use with NVDA and then never give a public statement regarding what that tool actually does and how to use it, particularly on the page from which it is downloaded.

There are constantly people arriving who are new to NVDA.  I'm certainly not new to NVDA anymore, but I still have no idea of what a number of the add-ons do.  Whether I use them or not, that information should be front and center on the page where the add-on is obtained.  To my mind, it shouldn't even go up on such a page without documentation.
