Re: web sites detecting a screen reader

OK I am a strong believer in using Google to find answers before I ask one here.  Giving me the term SR flag did not help much in resolving this issue.  I tried all kinds of searches using SR flag and got nothing.  Maybe you can be a little more helpful in hiding the screen reader from web pages.

Don,

I don't think you can stop the websites, but I could swear that it was recently discussed that you can put screen readers, and I think it was NVDA in particular, into "stealth mode" at startup so that whatever flag it is that the screen reader sets/waves to tell software looking for it that it's present is not set.  But I'll be darned if I can remember the magic search term to find that discussion.

web sites detecting a screen reader

Don H

It seems that more and more web sites are detecting that you have a screen reader and offer some kind of changes to the web site to accommodate a screen reader.  In some cases a message keeps popping up offering these mods and it is very difficult or impossible to turn them

off.

Is there a way to prevent a web page from detecting that you are using a screen reader?

Re: IDLE not accessable with NVDA

Unfortunately, tk, the GUI framework that Idle is built with (via Python's tkinter library), has no accessibility support. You will have to use another editor or IDE.
Visual Studio Code is very accessible and has very good Python support via a plugin.

NVDA losing focus

Janet Brandly

Hello all,

I’m running the last stable release of NVDA, the latest update of Windows 10 and Office 365. For the last few weeks I’ve been having some major problems with NVDA seeming to lose focus. Some examples are when submitting forms on websites, working with Outlook, navigating between different file levels with WE, and occasionally when working with PDF documents. NVDA just stops speaking. If I’m on a website toggling in and out of browse mode doesn’t help. This is very annoying and is slowing me down significantly. I have to alt-tab through open windows until NVDA regains its focus. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. I’m doing a pretty demanding online course right now. I’d like to continue using NVDA for this course and when/if I find work, but I’ve got to solve this problem.

Thank you,

Janet

if you bought them, you should be able to download them as many times as you need. Also, I don't think those voices are SAPI5. I think they only work in the text aloud program. I don't think they work with NVDA.

Re: Windows 10 clipboard manager

Eilana Benish

Hello Joseph

I am using Windows 10 apps sentials add on like forever

also I am updating JAWS 2019 to the latest version of 2019 and Soon I may upgrade to the latest version of 2021.

In addition , the windows clipboard saves all the formatting for the copied items . so for example if I am copying from Microsoft Word text with bullets and numbers and also headings and other styles, the windows clipboard manager save them.

Hi,
This is clipboard history, not exactly a clipboard manager to deal with formatting and such.
As for NVDA, try with Windows 10 App Essentials add-on installed (lately I've become this add-on's salesman...).
As for JAWS, if using Widows 10 May 2020 Update (or later), you'll need most recent JAWS 2019 release, or better yet, JAWS 2020 for better functionality and compatibility.
Cheers,
Joseph

I have JAWS 2019 and it's not working there either as expected as far as keyboard navigation. The keyboard focus does not move always to the list of copied items. that is becausw this component it's not made accessible from the ground.
so I am notifying the developers of NVDA community of this issue

Eilana,

I am using Jaws and it seems to work better with  Jaws.
I have experimented a bit wit NVDA and sometimes after using it and pressing win-v again, it will change speech rate on my computer.
With Jaws I have not seen strange things in my short test.
This will not help you, but maybe something in NVDA causes this.
And yes: there are other clipboardmanagers, but I am not using them.

Regards, Marten

Re: NVDA volume louder on lock screen/secure screens

Louise Pfau

Hi.  I'm experiencing the increased volume in the secure screens with NVDA.  I didn't check the box to use the currently saved settings because I find the default settings useful in trying to determine that I'm in the secure screens.  When I checked what soundcard I'm using, the only information I got was "Windows default", which I know isn't really helpful.  My speakers are RealTek.

Re: Admin's Note, Please Read #adminnotice

The group Welcome and Monthly Reminder messages have been update to include the following very near to the beginning of each:

In addition to the NVDA Group Specific rules which follow, all members are expected to adhere to the NVAccess Citizen and Contributor Code of Conduct.  This is for the main NVDA Group and all subgroups.  If you have a grievance against an individual whom you believe to have violated the code of conduct during any interaction on this group, please e-mail us at nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io and the issue will be investigated and addressed promptly and confidentially.

---------------
Not that I think we're going to have any issues related to this, but I will re-emphasize the "during any interaction on this group" aspect.  If it's in public, or even in private but directly linked to a private response to a message on the group, that's within group administration's purview to handle.  If it's got its origin outside that scope, it's not.

And the kinds of disagreements that are characteristic of adults in general, and that could occasionally occur in "polite company" in real life, do not fall under the Code of Conduct.  It needs to be serious before administrative intervention is called for.

NVDA and Ivona from nextup.com

Hi,
Has anyone purchased the ivona voices from nextup.com on the extra voices page?
How many times can you download those voices? The reason I ask is because they give you the option to purchase a backup CD.

Hello everyone,

In the last in-process blog post by NVAccess, they linked to the NVAccess Code of Conduct. For reference, that link is https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/blob/master/CODE_OF_CONDUCT.MD

Moving forward, in addition to the existing list policy, this code of conduct will also apply to anyone wishing to participate in this community.

I will be asking Brian to update the list rules with content from the NVAccess Code of Conduct. If you have a grievance against an individual whom you believe to have violated the code of conduct as a result of an interaction resulting from membership on this list, please email us at nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io and we will investigate, and address it promptly and confidentially. Please note that the code of conduct will apply to this list and all subgroups as well.

Sorry Brian - I didn't write my post clearly - I was trying to ask Don whether he had noticed the change in behaviour in between the last beta and the RC, or whether he had been using NVDA 2020.2 up until he tried the RC.

But yes, your description of the cycle is quite accurate :)  And in answer to what I seemed to ask :)
