Re: Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.3 #addonrelease

Hi,

Hmmm, I can’t reproduce this on my system running 1909, NVDA 2019.2.1, and Add-on Updater latest stable release. Can you try the following for me:

  1. Uninstall Add-on Updater completely.
  2. Restart NVDA.
  3. Go to NVDA user configuration folder (search for “explore NVDA” from Start search box and the first result should be “Explore NVDA user configuration directory”.
  4. Delete a file named “nvda3208.pickle” (do not send it to Recycle Bin, press Shift=Delete to permanently remove it).
  5. Restart NVDA.
  6. Reinstall Add-on Updater stable version (19.11).
  7. Try updating Windows 10 App Essentials.

If this does not resolve the problem, chances are that it is something unique to your system, which may or may not get fixed in a future version of Add-on Updater.

Cheers,

Joseph

Actually, it is compatible with 1809 and later. I’m beginning to wonder if this affects anyone using Add-on Updater, and if this is the case, it isn’t Windows 10 App Essentials at all.

Hi all,

In a few moments Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.3 will be made available. This release is a localization and documentation update.

A few important notes:

  • Windows 10 20H1 is now formally known as Version 2004. Although Windows 10 App Essentials does support Version 2004, formal support won’t begin until early next year.
  • A version scheduled for early next year will retire support for EdgeHTML-based Microsoft Edge from this add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph

Oh okay. No wonder I couldn’t find the original message.  I thought it was due to this windows ten mail. The event I did miss I didn’t care that I missed it!  I didn’t want to go anyway! I’m looking for another e-mail client should I end up gaining employment.

No problem.  The original poster was a very recent joiner here and left quite quickly.  The only reason I mentioned it is so that anyone extending the discussion believing that they might be answering the original question/fixing the original issue won't have the audience that raised it.

Sorry Brian:  I did not see the original post.  I was away for a few days.  I thought  there was an update to NVDA when I seen some of the messages that were inquiring about an update.  I’m having slight trouble with windows ten mail.  I don’t see all the messages that are posted. I’m looking into getting another e-mail client.  Due to this minor problem. I missed an event that I was going to attend.  I just now seen the message that was sent days ago.

Hold down shift while Firefox is starting to enable safe mode. So for example I will hit my shortcut key for Firefox and then immediately switch to holding down shift. A dialog box will come up asking if you want to start in safe mode or refresh Firefox.

The error you gave isn't one I've seen before - NVDA doesn't need access to the Internet in order to install or run.  It obviously won't be able to check for updates if it can't access the Internet, but aside from that (and the error it gives if you try to manually check for updates is "Error checking for updates" - when it checks automatically each day it doesn't give an error if there is no connection).

If you go to the download's page in your browser and try to download, it will either load the page or not, and then download or give an error.  At this stage, I'm not even sure if you have downloaded an update or where you are at.  All I can tell you is that I've downloaded NVDA several times today to check, both using the update function, and manually, and haven't had any problems with the process.

Re: Insert Key deactivated after shutdown and restart

Ron,

If you have not already done so, check to see if Fast Startup is enabled on your system and, if so, disable it.  The very first "mysterious experience" I had that had Fast Startup and the corruption of the hibernation file used by same at its root was for JAWS and not responding to keyboard input.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Control Panel, Power Options, Choose what the Power Button does link, activate the Change settings that are currently unavaliable link to make the checkboxes for Turn on Fast Startup (recommended), Sleep, Hibernate, and Lock available for checking/unchecking.  Uncheck the checkbox for Fast Startup and gracefully work your way back out of the dialogs.

I'am currently using NVDA version 2019.1

Ok which version do you both have?  The last regular stable version is 2019.2.1.  Yes, we're normally up to .3 thinking about .4 by now, but with big changes coming in to the next release, we didn't want to rush it just to meet a time frame.

So, if you are running 2019.2.1, then you're on the latest version.  You can also check on the download page: https://www.nvaccess.org/download the first heading tells you the current version.

I'm happy to try to help you, but a one-word answer to two questions at once isn't as helpful as it could be.

I just installed 2019.1 and updated it to 2019.2.1 without incident.  You could either try again and see if it works this time, or you could download the current version from: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/

Downloading and installing from there will still recognise your previous version and keep your existing settings.

Kind regards

Hi Jonathon,

Can you please give some details about why you are unable to update?  Are you getting an error message (if so, what does it say)?

I downloaded NVDA earlier and it was working then.  It might have been a temporary issue somewhere along the line.  It's worth trying again and then if you still have problems, try to describe exactly what is happening and what response you are getting so we can help.

Kind regards

Re: Insert Key deactivated after shutdown and restart

BTW, I'm not at all sure about this, Ron, but I rather suspect this
behavior has something to do w/the Windows 10 Realtek drivers. There
does seem to be issues w/them.

Ron, have you tried simply using alt control n? That's what I do when

Hi Group,

I can't quite remember just when this started, but over the past one to
two weeks, I have noticed that when I shutdown and restart the computer,
when I try to use NVDA desktop keystrokes, the insert key does not
interact with the program.  That is to say, pressing insert + T results
in just the T being recognized and if on the desktop, I move to the
first item that begins with T.  I have checked to see whether somehow
the numlock has been turned on and it has not. I have toggled it on and
off a few times every time this has occurred to see if that changed
anything and it did not.

The way to reactivate the insert key is to shut down and restart NVDA.
Since the insert key is not working at this time, I have to use windows
key + B to move to the system tray and then use first letter navigation
to move to NVDA, then press enter on NVDA and up arrow once to exit and
press enter.  Then I can use the NVDA hotkey to restart the program and
everything works as it should.

Has anyone else experienced this recently, and if so is there a
cause/remedy?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Virtual review and cmd / power shell

Hi,

Technically, it does not replace screen review, especially if modern apps are involved. This add-on will do what JAWS’s “virtualize current window” command does: presents screen content (almost the entire screen content) as a virtual viewer so one can review text. In modern apps such as ones found in Windows 8 and later, this add-on will gather content text by traversing through all screen elements (or almost all elements) and collect labels and present it on screen.

Cheers,

Joseph

I don't know enough about virtual review to comment on that.  It sounded to me from the description and from the name that it duplicates screen review but are you saying that isn't the case?  I was saying that it evidently allows you to search the screen which is a feature no NVDA review mode has and thus, it shouldn't be described as just a convenience.  But it would be good to clarify if it duplicates screen review but with different commands or does something else.

Hi,

Maybe we need to update the description to say that it is useful in modern apps where screen review isn’t working.

Cheers,

Joseph

I just read the description of the add-on.  The sentence near the beginning that says that it is just for convenience and doesn't replace the NVDA review methods appears to be inaccurate.  Assuming that this is equivalent to screen mode in NVDA, it has an important ability that screen mode has never had, nor object navigation.  You can't search for content in either of those modes.  You have to look at the screen or move through the screen line by line to get to something.

You need to install the virtual review addon as this is not a built-in
NVDA function. You can get it at
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/virtualRevision.en.html.
