As a general note, and it's been true for a long time now, you should always take the time to completely explore each and every dialog presented during the installation of software, and most particularly when it's free software.

Though the software itself may be fine, and free, these days the costs of hosting are often covered by the loathsome practice of bundling, whereby you are "offered" something you neither want nor need as part of the install, and most often that offer is such that if you do not opt out you get it by default.  Even if you use a tool such as Unchecky you still need to be doing your own due diligence, as there are constantly new ways of sneaking these offers in.

changes in speech in NVDA 2019.3

Giles Turnbull

Hi all,

does anyone know whether there have been changes to the speech processing part of NVDA in the 2019.3 update? I didn't spot anything in the change log, but I experience a couple of things that are different from the 2019.2.1 version.

The first one is very minor ... when I tag an email in gmail so that it goes into an existing  folder, I press c to go to the combo box listing all folders, then I press a letter corresponding to the first letter of the folder name - such as f for my Facebook notifications. Once focus is on Facebook I tab over and activate the Go button, which applied the label to the email. Since 2019.3 the letter I pressed (in this case f) gets spoken when I tab over to the Go button; this did not happen before 2019.3.If I need to press the letter more than once to continue past Facebook to Farming and then to Fiction, NVDA now announces "fff" which is mildly annoying!

More of a problem is when I mistype words ... I regularly mistype because as becuase and words ending in tion as toin ... I suspect when I've done this and immediately select the word and retype it without presing space to move onto typing the next word. As a result the first mistyping doesn't get spoken straight away ... it gets spoken as I press space or punctuation ... and it merges the mistyped word in with the correct version, and they are seemlessly connected like they are one single word, becuasebecause ... the same happened in this post when I mistyped punctuation as puncutation and got "puncutationpunctuation" as a result.

The only irritation with this is that it makes it difficult to tell whether the subsequent attempts at spelling the word correctly has removed the typo or whether it is still mistyped.

I'm curious whether this is an intentional change and, if so, what the thinking behind it is.

Giles

Re: Accessibility issues with latest potplayer, warn user not to upgrade to latest version

Edited

Is this an issue exclusive to Windows 10? On my Windows 7 PotPlayer seems to be accessible, even with the latest version. My laptop is running Windows 10 and I'm experiencing the same issue whereby the context menu is not accessible.
Update: I tried the earlier suggestion to change a skin setting, and it worked!
Regarding the adware, the button to decline the offer is clearly accessible with NVDA. Just press enter or space on the decline button and you should be good to go.

NVDA 2019.3.1 Not saying selected and unselected

David Mackenzie

Hi,

With 19.3.1 and windows 10 (up-to-date) NVDA will not say selected or unselected on highlighted files/folders/shortcuts when tapping the space bar.  If I do a quick search using the first letter, the first instance of a file/ folder/shortcut is selected, but not spoken by NVDA, I have to arrow down then up to confirm selection.

All add-ons have been removed.  The situation is the same when loading NVDA 19.3.1 onto a brand new computer.

Reinstalling 19.2.1 resolves the problem.

Any help is appreciated.  Is this a bug or will changing a setting resolve this?

Thank you,

David Mackenzie

Usually there are some download site that will inject some extra malware or adware into the installers.

'AppData' is a folder in your Windows user account home folder, and 'Roaming' is a folder within that. AppData\Roaming is where programs on your machine store data that is specific to your user account. The folder is normally hidden, and lives within your user account home folder.

Re: New Member Seeking Tutorials

Quentin Christensen

Hi Richard,

Good questions!  As David noted, the electronic text version comes as a zip file which includes the book as a web page (html), Word (docx), electronic book (ePub) and Kindle (kfx) formats - they are all identical, it's just up to personal preference which format you prefer to read.

The audio and Braille versions were updated last year, just after we updated the electronic text version.  We tried to keep them accurate for users with Windows 7 through to Windows 10 and the current (at the time) NVDA.  So, it should give you enough information to be able to get to a program using the Start menu for instance, although it doesn't necessarily cover every new aspect of the latest incarnation of the Windows 10 start menu.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi;

I took a look at the training material on the nvda site and had a question or two.  The basic training version is initially shown as an e-book.  Will this be something that can be read with word or will need some additional software.

Secondly there is a more expensive version which appears to be mp3.  Does anyone know how current the mp3 version is?  I think I saw a notice that it was done with a windows 7 pc so I wonder if there using the latest greatest version of nvda?

Any information appreciated.

Hi Richard,

As well as all the information previously mentioned, we have some official training material for NVDA you might be interested in.  The main one to start with is the Basic Training for NVDA.  Despite the name, it covers everything from starting NVDA through to advanced concepts like Object Navigation, the Review Cursor and Configuration Profiles.  It is available in a range of formats, starting at just $30 Australian (not much over $20 USD depending on the exchange rate of the day): https://www.nvaccess.org/shop

Kind regards

Quentin.

Depending on how much you know about working with Windows and Windows programs and browsing, you may only need specific information such as how to use object navigation, and screen review.  The quick navigation keys for browsing will be very similar between JAWS and NVDA and my impression is that Window-eyes used roughly the same commands toward the end of its versions.

I can't suggest specific tutorials but that may help you know what to look for.

If you need more instruction, others can suggest a lot of material.

Re: Question to NV-Access developers

Quentin Christensen

Hi Christo,

I believe Innovision have previously distributed their driver either directly with units, or via their website.  Looking at http://innovisiontech.co/support/ I can see an NVDA driver there, however the link http://innovisiontech.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2017/12/BrailleMe_NVDA.zip indicates it is from 2017.

I haven't seen an updated driver myself, however as I don't have one of their units, and I don't compile code directly, I don't necessarily have a reason to have it.  I'd suggest checking with them on where they are at.  I know it is frustrating, and while I normally encourage everyone to use the latest NVDA, in a situation like this, there is nothing wrong with using NVDA 2019.2.1 until the new driver comes out.  If you want to have the best of both worlds, you can have a portable copy of one version and an installed copy of the other - that way you can use the latest NVDA features from 2019.3.1, and still have access to Braille using 2019.2.1.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello Quentin and others

Our organisation, Blind SA, is the distributor for the BrailleMe in South Africa. Some months back we alerted Innovision, manufacturers of the BrailleMe, about the compatibility issue with Python 3. They gave us the assurance that the updated add-on would be ready by the time NVDA 2019.3 was released, but it has not happened yet.

We had a Skype conference with Shyam Shah of Innovision yesterday and addressed this matter with him. He informed us that they had submitted their add-on to the NVDA people who review and publish add-ons and that they were waiting to hear from you about the add-on.

I wish to hear from you if you can confirm that you have indeed received the add-on and are reviewing it and if you could give an estimate as to when it would be published. I told Shyam that I would check with you and will also forward your response to him.

I also posted this to the NVDA add-ons list. I received two responses there indicating that they don't know anything about an update to this add-on. One person wrote that the add-on might have been sent to you at NV-Access for possible inclusion in the NVDA core, but that is unlikely.

Do you know anything about an updated version of the add-on? This is becoming a real issue for those who have been using the BrailleMe with NVDA. I know the delay is not your fault; I am just trying to find out where the process is and when we could expect an update from the manufacturers.

Kind regards

Christo
