Current status of Tiflotecnia voices?

Mobeen Iqbal

Hello Everyone.

I was wondering what the current status of voices from Tiflotecnia is? I am assisting a client who has previously purchased voices and the add-on on their website isn't compatible with 2019.3.1. I thought they had released an update but obviously not. Does anyone have any ideas how we can get things working again?

Cheers,

Mo.

Re: speech syns

Kelly Sapergia

Hi,

I personally prefer the Acapela voices. I use Sharon primarily. The one
thing I wish is that the special codes to make a voice laugh, cry, etc.,
would work by default. There are some instructions on the Acapela Voices for
NVDA website's blog, but so far they don't work for me. Also, at least with
version 2019.3.1 of NVDA, I'm noticing some extra long pauses in spots, such
as before announcing if a checkbox is checked. This didn't occur with
earlier versions of the driver.

Thanks.

Yours Sincerely,

Re: Number and Abbrieviation Processing

Martin McCormick

I am not an expert on regular expressions, but I sure
love to use them because they solve many decision problems
regarding text and how it is processed. For every problem
solved using a RE, hoever, there is a potential side effect created that
is just waiting to kick you in the knee. Output text is best
described as a stream of consciousness. We humans have the most
sophisticated computing system on Earth sitting right atop our
necks and our speech output is usually controlled by the context
of what we are doing and talking about at the moment. It's also
influenced by our age, education and where we came from.

A speech program for a computer doesn't even come close
to having any concept of that type of context and it gets to be a knotty
problem even for humans placed in an unfamiliar situation in
which street slang and vernacular are different on different
blocks of the same street.

We instantly know whether we should say the long E sound
when seeing R E A D or whether we should say a word that sounds
just like the color red if we just read a book.

A speech synthesizer that can get that little issue right
every time doesn't exist and that extraordinary computer that
sits on most of our spines can even be confused by unusual syntax
so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for someone to come up with
a software solution anytime soon, at least, not today.

I will say to those working on these projects, Keep up
the good work.

Probably the best idea in the mean time could be some
form of easily accessible switch that can be changed on the fly
to enable and disable the triggers that are causing misbehavior.
In the world of software, one situation's annoying behavior is
another's pure genius.

It can be done with NVDA's speech dictionary. You'd need to use a
"regular
expression" (regex) to avoid having enter every possible combination of
numbers. Actually another way (since I haven't ever sat down and properly
learned regex, and I haven't fully thought this through) I just tried, is
to make a speech dictionary entry to change "." (period or full stop, no
quotes) to "dot" (d o t, again no quotes).

I don't know if this is two issues or one and if it's something that
can be done within NVDA. I use the Windows core voices synthesizer,
although it occurs with the Microsoft SAPI synth as well. I do not
want dates or abbreviations to be processed. For example, the latest
version of NVDA, 2019.03.01 is read as "March 1, 2019" instead of
"2019 dot 03 dot 01". Additionally, I am hearing hello.pl as "hello
dot place" instead of "hello dot p l." Obviously, I know I can use
the dictionary to teach NVDA to read "pl" as "p l" but there seems to
be dozens of these abbreviations. I look at software versions all day
so the first example is driving me crazy.

Is there a way within NVDA to say ignore date processing and
abbreviation processing? I definitely have been unsuccessful finding
how this would be done with the synthesizer software. If there is a
synthesizer that has this level of control that won't hit my wallet
too hard and actually has a real sounding voice, I'd be interested in
going that route if it's my only option.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Gary

I believe if after starting your computer, if you redo the "Use currently saved settings on the logon and other secure screens (requires administrator" in NVDA Preferences/General, that problem will go away.

Hi Robert,

Are you using OE classic yourself and if yes, with what screenreader?
I have installed the OE calssic 3.0 version and have set up an account.
With jaws I can mark a highlight color and then you can navigate through
the list, but not really great and hotkeys of OE are also not working.

Are you using it and with what screenreader?

The below is from their accessibility email list. No, I have no clue how to join it. I was added. For those who hate Thunderbird, this may be a good alternative but understand that the free version does not support IMAP or profiles yet.

Before I paste the email, [here's the website.](http://www.oeclassic.com/) Check it out. Send them bugs and questions.

In the latest release of OE Classic 3.1, released today (10th February 2020), we've added the support for standard Message dialogs which are now fully screen-reader accessible. The dialogs use standard buttons and standard way of displaying messages which is easily readable to any screen-reader. The dialog we're describing are the ones such as "are you sure" type of dialogs. For example, when you right click the empty deleted items folder option one such dialog will show up.

To have this support there are some requirements though:

- you must run at least Windows Vista or newer (Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 work well, and Windows 10 works best regarding this)

- Theme support must be enabled on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. (so in other words, Windows must be using at least Windows Basic or Windows Aero theme). On Windows 10 this is not a problem, because the themes from Windows 8 and earlier are removed - Windows 10 has always theme support enabled so message dialogs in OE Classic will be always the standard Windows ones which are accessible. The requirement to have theme support enabled on Windows Vista / 7 / 8 will be removed in one of the updates when we switch to newer compiler than the one we currently use. But this is not much of a problem. Windows 7 usually is already set to one of the above mentioned themes by default, and for Windows 10 this is not a problem at all, since it has this always enabled.

- Windows XP cannot be supported unfortunately. It doesn't support the required programming interface needed to add this. If you use that version, OE Classic will revert to the older dialogs which are not accessible. We have some ideas how to support even this, but it will require some compromises which we are only ready to take when the popularity of Windows XP is below 1% (currently about 2%).

In addition to all the above, we're also working on adding accessibility support for the list views (message list, contact list, folder list) which is currently the biggest known thing to be missing. We have made some progress regarding that in discovering why it doesn't work but there is still work to be done. We will notify you about this separately. There are also a few other windows which haven't been localized and as such adjusted for accessibility, and that will be done in time too, but these windows are rare in the current version (it is the updates window and send/receive window for example). With all of that we're approaching the goal of reaching 100% accessibility.

If you have suggestions, other than the ones which are already listed, we're always looking forward to those. If you have already made a suggestion, rest assured it is already in our queue to be implemented so there is no need to suggest it again.

Hi Brian,

It has same effect as going into folder options and view tab. If you set it using shortcut keys and then go into the options the other way you will find it set in there and if you set or unset in folder option you would find the ribbon option checked or unckecked accordingly.

Just curious, does doing it this way make the change apply globally to all files and folders or just to the one that you're viewing at the time?  I see all the controls you've mentioned, but have not used this technique, always going the File Options dialog in Control Panel instead.

And for the record, what one does to show/hide hidden files has remained the same for a very, very long time now.  It didn't change under Windows 10 one iota.

Control Panel, File Explorer Options, View Tab, and activate either the Show hidden files, folders, and drives radio button or its Don't show sibling.
