Podcast - Speak On as a Podcast Reader

David Griffith

I have never distributed my Speak On material through this list before but given the recent interest here in using Speak On as an option as an accessible eBook Reader and Podcast Reader I thought that I should do so just this once.

There is a Speak On Mailing list where both I and Isaac the program developer reside with others which may, in future,  be more appropriate for more detailed discussion of Speak On.

Details below.

I finished the Podcast on using Speak On as   a Podcast reader yesterday and the link to this is also provided below. I think it is OK though I have not listened all the way through.

The Podcasts are being distributed by talking Computers on a monthly basis and will be eventually hosted also on the Speak On Web Site. However, especially at the moment I have no problem with any others linking through their websites etc so that as many as possible enjoy Speak On now in what are difficult times.

First is a link to the most recent Podcast and then the full list.

09 Speak On and Podcasts.

This Podcast covers searching for a Podcast, subscribing to a Podcast by adding to Favorites, downloading Podcast, and browsing the Category Online directory Service.   As part of this it show how Speak On acts as a virtual BBC Sounds app. It also covers importing OPML files from another Podcast Reader and briefly covers the optional VI Podcast app which provides access to selected Podcasts of interest to Blind and Partially Sighted People.

Note For a demonstration of the third Podcast facility in Speak On , via the tunein  Radio   app  to download Podcasts and Radio  shows from that service,  please refer back to Podcast 5 on Internet Radio and Speak On.

Re: When nvda keeps turning itself on any time another program opens or shuts

Hi,
One possibility: are you talking about User Account Control? If yes, that will explain why, and to turn that off, one must disable "Use NVDA on the Windows logon screen (requires administrator privileges)" Checkbox found in NVDA settings/general panel.
Cheers,
Joseph

Try using the task manager to shut down NVDA. I don't recall if you said which version of Windows you are running, but if you need to know how to do it, let us know. If that doesn't help, I may be out of ideas.

The only part of Zoom which isn't fully accessible is the text chat feature, butjust about everything else is able to be accessed.
A rough estimate is that zoom is about 90% accessible right now.

Thanks Richard Sara and Brian,

I just installed the Zoom client for windows ten and signed in to my university business account. On the surface, it seems that the menus are accessible with NVDA 2019.3.1 but I am not sure about the submenus and pulldown menus. I need to try it with someone to have a firsthand experience with it. I need to figure out how to setup a meeting on a specific time and send the invitation to an entire class, ETC.

Does anyone have a quick tutorial?

Ibrahim

Re: How accessible is Zoom with NVDA?

And to make this as easy as possible, for those who want a great audio book about how to use the most commonly used features of Zoom both as an attendee and as a meeting organizer, please see Jonathan Mosen's webpage for same:  Free audiobook, “Meet Me Accessibly – A Guide to Zoom Cloud Meetings from a Blindness Perspective”

Review his overview about the book contents there and download a free copy.  There's nothing like going to the source, and no point in rehashing anything when the source material is available with a simple link activation.

Johnathon Mosen has made his book on using Zoom free. It is a very comprehensive overview of using the service. It is a recording so   one hears Johnathan using JAWS as he navigates the interface.

I wish there had also been a text file so that it would be possible to add notes as you read, but a super place to get started.

I purchased Zoom Professional and will be using the introduction as I start to use it.

Re: Setting a key to change indentation level

Sascha Cowley

Hello,

You can do this by setting an input gesture.

  1. Open the NVDA Input Gestures dialog. It can be found under the NVDA preferences menu.
  2. In the "Filter by:" field, type "indent".
  3. Tab to the tree. There should be two commands shown, both under "Document formatting". Arrow down until you get to "Cycles through line indentation settings".
  4. Tab to "Add" and press enter or space; or, press alt+A. Then, activate the keystroke you want to hit to Cycle through line indentation settings.
  5. In the menu that pops up, use the up and down arrows to select if this keystroke applies to the laptop, desktop, or all keyboard layouts. If you only use one (IE, you're always on a laptop), I would suggest using that layout, but it is up to you.
  6. Tab to "OK" and hit space or enter..

Now, you should be able to open a document, type some text with different indentation levels, and use your configured input gesture to change the way NVDA reports the indentation. Navigate through the document to check that it works.

Hope this helps,
Sascha

Subject: [nvda] How accessible is Zoom with NVDA?

Hello folks,

This week I will be switching to distant teaching.  I will be using zoom to meet with my students and give my lectures.

How accessible is Zoom with NVDA?

Do I need to install a special addon to use zoom efficiently on my laptop?

I know that zoom is very accessible on iOS and Android, but I am not familiar with its functionality with windows and NVDA

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Regards,

Ibrahim

It is very very accessible. Iv'e used it to teach class, etc. I love it. I've also used it to hold meetings in an organization I help to run. Ok, I'm just a secretary over there but I love to organize people.
