Note - I am now speaking as group moderator. The following is not a suggestion, and it is occurring on forum because it needs to. Zahra, you are hereby ordered to cease and desist in all posts requesting any XP related NVDA feature back ports. Windows XP has been out of support for over 10 years and no sane development team will waste a single second on this. Your choice to continue using Windows XP, against all advice, is yours and yours alone. The situation you find yourself in is a direct consequence of your choice. It is not up to anyone else to even try to fix. If you persist in making these posts, I will suspend your posting privileges. It is that simple, so stop - now - and don't do it again - ever. --

hi joseph. as i mentioned in my emails, i only need two or three fixed in newer versions of nvda for backporting to the supported versions of nvda on xp. and i promise that my request does not cause nvda crashing or unresponsiveness in any version of windows! my requests are only specific for firefox and contains important fixes which i am sure benefits everyone.

Hello NVDA users and add-on developers,
First, I would like to reiterate how important it is that everyone listen to advice from reputable sources regarding COVID-19, including public health officials recommending folks to exercise social distancing for a while. Even if you do not feel sick, please help others by washing hands, practice social distancing, and monitor the situation regarding the pandemic and community spread. And since the NVDA community is a global movement, please support each other.
Onto the matter at hand: for several days I have received requests about NVDA add-ons and Windows XP support. Requests have included making add-ons compatible with Windows XP again, compatibility issues, and backporting newer NVDA bug fixes and features to users of NVDA 2017.3, the last version compatible with Windows XP.
At the moment there is no community guidance on support for Windows XP, with many people asking others to upgrade to newer Windows releases. But as an individual add-on author and a contributor to NVDA screen reader project, I would like to take this time to make the following personal announcement:
Effective April 15, 2020, if you ask me to do one or more of the following for Windows XP users, the answer you will get is, "sorry, no more, period." These include:
* Making add-ons compatible with Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008 * Fixing compatibility issues and non-working add-ons after you knowingly install newer add-on releases on NVDA 2017.3 or earlier * Backporting features and bug fixes from newer NVDA releases to NVDA 2017.3 * Maintaining a long-term support version of NVDA for Windows XP/Server 2003/Vista/Server 2008 users
Most importantly, I will flatly say "no" if you ask me privately to ask NV Access and/or add-on developers about Windows XP support. Many features introduced in newer NVDA releases cannot be backported for various reasons, including risk of crashing NVDA (grammar error announcement, for example), incompatibility with Python 2 (broader Unicode support, for example), features that will not work properly with XP (screen curtain, for example), support for apps no longer recommended for wider use (outlook Express, for example), and broad changes that alters how add-ons work (speech refactor and multi-category settings dialog, for example). Several add-on authors have indicated reluctance to support XP, and in case of add-ons I'm either maintaining or have passed onto the community, none of them support NVDA 2019.2.1 or earlier, let alone Windows XP and friends.
My personal statement above will not be in effect until April so that you can help others going through COVID-19 and for my statement as an individual developer to sink in. Note that I'm not speaking on behalf of other developers - others have their own policies regarding support for Windows XP. NV Access does provide a download link for NVDA 2017.3, the last version compatible with Windows XP.
I know my statement is a huge blow to many of you. As much as I wanted folks to understand that end of support means end of support, and I understand that many of you cannot afford newer equipment and software releases (including moving to newer Windows releases), I felt it is time to make a bold statement and say "no" to Windows XP support. In the past, I did note on various NVDA forums that my add-ons will not and does not support Windows XP, but didn't announce a statement like this then, hoping that folks will understand the reality at last. But alas, it is time to officially close the doors to Windows XP support from my end - once again, this is an individual developer saying this, not on behalf of the community at large, knowing that others will make statements on their own.
Thank you for understanding.
Cheers,
Joseph

Cheers,
Joseph

Hi Isaac I saw a message on the list re SpeakOn and have downloaded it and I am extremely impressed with it’s functionality and ease of use. There are a few minor annoyances which you may or may not be able to do anything about but I thought I would seek your opinion regarding them. Firstly, I am using Windows 10 and set up the desktop shortcut to run as administrator to avoid the UAC allow this software etc window but unfortunately, 3 of the 4 levels of UAC security trigger a different UAC message “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?”. The only way around this is to turn UAC security off altogether, which also obviates the “run as admin” requirement. Is it possible to get the software certificated in some way to avoid this message? Secondly, when reading an audio book, is there any way to suppress the announcement of the file names as it moves through the files making up the book? Similarly when playing Music tracks in an album or playlist? Thirdly, this is a last minute discovery, so may be covered in the manual and I have missed it. When trying to add an RNIB flash drive containing 3 Daisy books to the Audio Book library, I had to insert another folder level via windows to the flash drive to allow me to select it and add it’s contents to the Audio Book library. When I restarted the task and initiated the Add/Library Audio Books Remove folder locations from the Settings sub-menu, The flash drive folder structure was the same as it was before I inserted the additional folder level. Is there a way to refresh the folder tree view without having to restart the app? Cheers Chris

SpeakOn home page is at: http://www.speakon.org.uk/SpeakOn.html You will find information on the media types its support, links to the docs and mailing list. The tutorials produced by David Griffith recently found somewhere else on this thread are excellent. Although the latest version was released in 2016 with one minor exception everything works and there are know known bugs. SpeakOn supports English only and does not support Braille. It does not support PDF either. It is recommended by RNIB in the UK for reading their audio books in Daisy; SpeakOn supports Daisy 2 used mostly (I think) in Europe. It does not support Daisy 3 in the US. Being developed in the UK it supports RNIB newspapers and magazines in test (epub) and audio. It supports the epub format generally. It does not support DRM as used mostly in the US The NVDA SpeakOn add-on is not necessary to use it but makes sure that NVDA does not speakOn when SpeakOn has the focus; it does not speak much anyway and I shall release an updated version of this add-on soon to this list. Re: Statement from Joseph Lee regarding NVDA add-ons and Windows XP support requests: no more, period
Hi, Zara,
We're not trying to judge or make fun of you. I'm sure there has to be some kind of organization in Iran where you can get a new or refurvished computer. You may not be able to afford a brand-new computer but I'm sure there are organizations that will help you to get a refurvished computer with windows 10. We have all told you numerous times that you shouldn't stay with a system that's no longer supported.

hi joseph. as i mentioned in my emails, i only need two or three fixed in newer versions of nvda for backporting to the supported versions of nvda on xp. and i promise that my request does not cause nvda crashing or unresponsiveness in any version of windows! my requests are only specific for firefox and contains important fixes which i am sure benefits everyone.

Cheers,
Joseph

I very seldom need to look at message header contents (which is not to say that this should be the case for anyone else) but I tend to use "View Source" and just search when I do.
When playing with NVDA in Thunderbird using the View All setting for headers, along with the Focus Highlight add-on, it looks like NVDA is staying in focus mode on all items as I go through the headers and I can't get it to switch over to browse mode or read the actual header content, just the header label. I am uncertain as to whether this is an NVDA issue or a Thunderbird issue. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Power is being told you're not loved and not being destroyed by it. ~ Madonna

Re: problem with turning on and off sticky keys
In Settings, Ease of Access, Keyboard Pane, there are two checkboxes associated with Sticky Keys, the first of which relates to getting or not getting the prompt you describe and the second of which relates to the on/off toggle tone. But, these are not in the Sticky Keys cluster itself, but in a category at the end of the pane, Make it easier to type. Screen reader searching on Sticky Keys should eventually land you on it. --

Re: Bluetooth hearing aid lag on Windows 10 with NVDA.
Daniel, I'll have to try later today with my hearing aids to see if this occurs. That being said, are your device drivers absolutely up to date for your sound card on the Win10 machine? That's another thing to check. --

hi joseph. as i mentioned in my emails, i only need two or three fixed in newer versions of nvda for backporting to the supported versions of nvda on xp. and i promise that my request does not cause nvda crashing or unresponsiveness in any version of windows! my requests are only specific for firefox and contains important fixes which i am sure benefits everyone.

Re: Bluetooth hearing aid lag on Windows 10 with NVDA.
I am not familiar with this kind of setup, but might unpairing and re-pairing do the trick? Do you have other devices connected (using Bluetooth) to your PC, e.g., a Braille display?
