IBM Gonvda add on. It won't make it to the official list. You might be able to find the one with the DLL included. It sounds just like eloquence, cuts off a bit, but works, and works with nvda 19.x and higher.

Hello everyone,

I don't know if I should write here, but it's mostly to see if others

had this issue. Perhaps I was unlucky. I often am with technology.

So I purchased CodeFactory eloquence and it worked well... until it

didn't. Now my profile with Eloquence in it won't start. When

selecting it I have a dialog telling me that CodeFactory will open

settings to check registration. I say okay and yes when Windows asks me

if this software should be allowed to perform admin tasks. The settings

open... but on clicking on ok I get a simple error: couldn't load

synthesizer. This happens if I select the speech synthesizer in NVDA's

settings as well.

So I would guess: not an NVDA bug, most likely a CodeFactory bug.

Still, as far as I know, things worked great before the update of the

last NVDA version (I'm running on 2020.1 now). Then again, it can

hardly be a Python version error, since I don't expect major changes

took place in Python version between these NVDA versions.

Has anyone experienced similar issues? And found a quick fix? I like

quick fixes... if they hold.

Thanks!

Vincent

Hi Group,

I also had this happen with the SAPI 5 version of Eloquence. Apparently, with the latest Windows update, it somehow deactivated the license key.  I saved my license key in the e-mail that authorized the sale and  so it was a simple matter to reauthorize by opening the product via the desktop icon and then clicking the enter key button and pasting in the key.  It reauthorized the software.  I wish they would make the necessary change in the software that would allow Windows to update without this random happening.

Tifflotechnia Vocalizer error

Hi,
Today, when I turned my laptop on, NVDA shows a Vocalizer license is invalid error. When I view the NVDA log to figure out what's wrong, I came across these lines:
Traceback (most recent call last):File "wx\core.pyc", line 2196, in Notify  File "C:\Users\nut\AppData\Roaming\nvda\addons\vocalizer_expressive_driver\globalPlugins\vocalizer_expressive_globalPlugin\__init__.py", line 130, in _renew    if _getValidationClient(self._activationCode) is None:  File "C:\Users\nut\AppData\Roaming\nvda\addons\vocalizer_expressive_driver\globalPlugins\vocalizer_expressive_globalPlugin\__init__.py", line 93, in _getValidationClient    email, password = storage.getCredentials()  File "C:\Users\nut\AppData\Roaming\nvda\addons\vocalizer_expressive_driver\synthDrivers\vocalizer_expressive\storage.py", line 100, in getCredentials    data = pickle.loads(raw)UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xd0 in position 4: ordinal not in range(128)
Any idea on how can I get my Vocalizer working again on my laptop?

locked Off Topic: for anyone with a small biz, EIDL grants back open

Luke Davis

Hello all

I got Nimer's permission to post the following. Please do not respond to this on list, as it is entirely OT, and the topic will be locked.

I know a lot of us have small businesses of one kind or another, or are
self-employed (income reflected on form 1099).

I don't want any of my fellow blind business owners, especially those who have been effected by COVID-19, to miss out on this potentially business-saving support.

If you are in the united States, and you have a business, the Small Business Administration's EIDL program is back open.
EIDL stands for Economic Injury Disaster Loan, although in this case I'm talking about the grant component.

The last time this was open, it was only open for a very! short time (less than two weeks).

The intent of the program is to provide low interest 30 year loans. However whether or not you qualify for or want a loan, before the loan, they provide what they call an "advance".
This is a grant (I.E. you do not have to pay it back), of between $1,000 and $10,000.

If you have a business, even a soul proprietorship that you alone work for, you are considered an employee of that business, and you likely qualify for at least the $1,000 per employee, if not the entire $10,000 that Congress ordered the SBA to give.

The online form doesn't take long, and is entirely accessible with NVDA or the screenreader of your choice.

Note! When filling out the form, you absolutely must be sure you check the box to request the $10,000 advance. It's on the third page of the form, I believe. Do not hit the final submit without checking that box.

There is no obligation to accept the loan even if they offer one, and if you do be very careful of the terms. That is beyond the scope of this message; just be aware that you don't have to, and may not want to, accept the loan. But the advance (the grant) comes with no obligation.

The form to fill out is at:

As long its working fine with most of us, you know what that means.

Re: NVDA and Jabber

Marquette, Ed

Sean is absolutely correct here. Just upgrading to the latest version is not an answer.
In an organization with enterprise applications and stringent data security policies, ordinary users--even senior partners in large law firms--almost never have administrative privileges.
One has to schedule time with a member of the IT Department to install updates. In fact, I'm waiting right now to get the latest 2020 version of NVDA (I'm still on 2019.3).
Then, there is the question of whether the enterprise is ready to upgrade an enterprise application. Typically, an application will go through a testing phase, and at that, the version will be at least one (and usually two) releases back, the hope being that patches and bug fixes will have solved problems that almost inevitably accompany new releases.
Being a part of a large organization has its advantages, but there are disadvantages too.

When office phones are not accessible or only marginally accessible, Jabber really helps, and because it is a Cisco product, the IT departments in large companies do not push back--as they do with programs having less recognized pedigrees. Jabber is even more important now that many, if not most, of us are working primarily from our home offices.
NVDA works quite well with Jabber on 95% of the calling features; however, it does not give the "STATUS" of the person being called, and it does not work well with Jabber's live chat feature.
JAWS handles these features fine, but JAWS is so bloated and so slow that our key application, a document management system, nearly chokes with JAWS running.
Once there was a Jabber add-in for NVDA, but it did not help with the above features.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

CodeFactory eloquence won't start anymore

Vincent Le Goff <vincent.legoff.srs@...>

Hello everyone,

I don't know if I should write here, but it's mostly to see if others had this issue.  Perhaps I was unlucky.  I often am with technology.

So I purchased CodeFactory eloquence and it worked well... until it didn't.  Now my profile with Eloquence in it won't start.  When selecting it I have a dialog telling me that CodeFactory will open settings to check registration.  I say okay and yes when Windows asks me if this software should be allowed to perform admin tasks.  The settings open... but on clicking on ok I get a simple error: couldn't load synthesizer.  This happens if I select the speech synthesizer in NVDA's settings as well.

So I would guess: not an NVDA bug, most likely a CodeFactory bug.  Still, as far as I know, things worked great before the update of the last NVDA version (I'm running on 2020.1 now).  Then again, it can hardly be a Python version error, since I don't expect major changes took place in Python version between these NVDA versions.

Has anyone experienced similar issues?  And found a quick fix?  I like quick fixes... if they hold.

Thanks!

Vincent

Re: How Do I Stop the NVDA Updater from Monitoring Specific Addons?

Kenny <kwashingtonbox@...>

Thanks Joseph for clearing the mystery up for me. It's really no big deal. I just disabled the Updater from monitoring the two add-ons in question. All is well again.

Hi Kenny,

Part of the reason is that the add-ons community did not receive a notice from Tony about new versions of his add-ons. Also, unless requested by add-on authors, there are no separate development releases channel for add-ons.

There are two other reasons:

  1. There is (or was) a huge discussion in the add-ons community about modernizing add-on release workflow and related materials. In the old days, add-ons workflow was intimately tied to NVDA translations, and NV Access people had a hard time maintaining the original version of this workflow (things have improved in recent months somewhat through communication between the original author of this workflow and NV Access staff). However, since the bulk of maintaining add-ons and translations workflow was carried out by people outside of NV Access through NV Access facility, it was felt that, for security reasons and for maintenance, NV Access staff decided to think about modernizing all this. Add-on Updater is merely the first step of this process, and if things go well, there will come a day when I can quietly retire from NVDA development after donating Add-on Updater code to NV Access.
  2. The person responsible for majority of add-on update metadata maintenance (yours truly) is away from his office at the moment for various reasons (mental health and academics being the highest of highest of priorities). For this reason, there is a delay between when an add-on author publishes an announcement about updated add-ons and when they will show up via Add-on Updater. I will indeed return to actively manage add-on update publishing in a few weeks.

Cheers,

Joseph
