Re: Most recent versions of "Microsoft Edge" and "Google Chrome" crashing intermittently with NVDA

Gene

I'm using Windows 7 and the old SAPI 4 voices. At times, NVDA will crash or it will cause Firefox to crash and at times, NVDA crashes when I use Windows Live Mail. I don't recall if these kinds of crashes occur with Chrome and The Brave Browser, but I think they do. I've seen one or two reports on the list over recent time of behavior that sounds similar and I suspect there is some sort of problem.

I also have the problem of read to end stopping reading off and on on certain web ;pages, sometimes two or three times on the same page.

I don't know when these problems started. I didn't start using new versions of NVDA until the one before the final release. I haven't used new versions to any extent for a long time until the one I'm using now. It is version 2020.1beta.

I am quite sure none of the problems I've reported are caused by it being a beta instead of the full release. I've seen similar problems described once or twice recently, as in the below message.

Because of these problems, and because I can use much earlier versions of NVDA I know don't have these problems, I use the new NVDA where I need to but the old version I've used for a long time in general. I realize there have been all sorts of changes to NVDA in the last many months, but I don't think mhy problems are so rare that they should not be looked into. Of course, that depends on how many people report them. I suspect many people have them.

Hi. I've noticed that the most recent versions of "Microsoft Edge" and "Google Chrome" are intermittently crashing with the most recent version of NVDA. I can't predict when this will occur to provide information for replicating the issue. I'm running Windows 10 version 2004.

Thanks,

Louise

Re: what addons can i get with the most recent version of NVDA?

Hi,

I assume Windows 10 App Essentials 20.08.1? Did you use Add-on Updater to check for updates? If yes, try using most recent Add-on Updater first before updating other add-ons.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi.  When I tried to install the "Windows 10 app essentials" add-on with the most recent version of NVDA, I was told that I was running an older version of Windows.  I'm running "Microsoft Windows Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.450)".

Hello list,

I’m mainly a Jaws user, but time to time, I use NVDA for the odd task or if Jaws is giving me problems or whatever.

I’m also a heavy Outlook user (V 2016). I’m noticing an issue with certain keystroke commands that appear to conflict with NVDA and Outlook and was wondering if it’s just me or if it really is an issue for others.

For example, alt+I while in a calendar will take you to the location field where you can enter in address location of the appointment. Alt+U takes you to the subject field be it in a calendar appointment or message. Alt+` (grov) takes you to the message field/notes section. Alt+1 or 2 or 3 etc. takes you to the various header fields like from, to, cc, bcc, subject… These all work fine with Jaws and to the best of my knowledge, are not screen reader specific commands, but rather Outlook’s.

These commands don’t appear to work with NVDA however. They seem to invoke some mouse commands or just don’t work period.

I use Outlook all day for my business which is very email and calendar-centric.  So, being able to use shortcuts like these are a huge time saver and really essential for how I work.

Am I perhaps missing something or is this really an NVDA compatibility issue?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

So 2 things. Remember that you've got 1core voices but also Microsoft
desktop voices. I'm just saying that to ensure you don't confuse the

Next, Louise have you tried a portable install of NVDA just for the

localized to?

Hey,

My two cents. I use Notepad++ with NVDA Add-on IndentNav to organize plain text into sections. You just need to keep your sections indented, and then you can have as many sections and subsections as you wish. It is quite effective for me, and I often times have 1000+ lines files with my notes that I can still quickly navigate using this method.

Ron, that's good to know. Even in cases where the program is great,

sometimes it gets distributed on other websites where it's loaded

w/crapware, & then it's not. So in a case like Pons, just make sure

you're at the real author's site.

Re: Which video software for nvda

Ron Canazzi

Hi Heddie,

1.  Launch Pontes.
2.  Open your browser and launch the Youtube videoe.
3.  Go to the address bar and copy the address.
4.  Move back to Pontes and paste in the address.
5.  By default, the file should download into your default download folder.  I have changed mine to something different.  you can do this under the Pontes settings. Actually you can tab to the item labeled download folder and press enter or space bar on it and a select folder dialogue should open where you can use normal Explorer navigation to select a new folder.

One other thing: You can make Pontes automatically copy the address from a Youtube page when it is launched under Pontes settings.  If you do this, there are some focus issues.  You may have to alt + tab around a few times to regain focus to Pontes once you launch the desired Youtube page.

If you need any more help, feel free to post again.

enough, maybe this won't work for you.

In any case, the download page for this app is:

I came accros Ummy Video Downloader  and it looks like a possibility
but unfortunately it allows only 1 free download before you need to
pay. The subscription price falls out of my monthly or once-off
budget. The video I downloaded from Youtube was of a very high quality.

Any suggestions for a free app?

I don't know where you are looking.  If you go to:
https://addons.nvda-project.org/index.en.html
that is the official NVDA add-ons page.  That doesn't mean that no
other add-ons are available elsewhere, it means that these have been
checked by NVDA volunteers for safety and that they work properly.

You are on the stable add-ons page.  You will see a link as you look
down the page for add-ons under development.  You may use them if you
wish but they may have bugs, being sort of like betas.

Legacy add-ons, as I understand it, and there is a link to them as
well, are those that can be used with older versions of NVDA.  I'm
not sure, but I don't think they will work with current versions.

If you go to the page I gave a link to earlier and move down the page
using h for heading, you will move from add-on link to add-on link.

Hi list members, i'd like to know is there a more recent updater, and
what addons can I use with the most recent version of NVDA? There
doesn't seem to  be many choices in terms of addons that I can choose
to use.  I would appreciate any assistance that anyone can give in
reguards to my questions. Thank you.

Hi Ron

I installed Pontes Media Downloader but at a loss as to how the program works. It shows the youtube file I want to download but I can't download it. Where can I find documentation or would you help me to understand the program?

Hi Heddy,

Pontes Media Downloader does give you the option to download the full unconverted video from Youtube.  It also allows  conversion to MP3 and other audio formats.  I am totally blind myself and therefore I cannot make accurate analysis of just what quality of videos are downloaded.  By default, it downloads the video in MP4 format.  I think this may be a compressed form of the video, so if compressed video format is not good enough, maybe this won't work for you.

So yes, the built-in Notepad can be used to take notes.
You may have created a good note-taking environment when you divide the topics into different folders.

But people don't take notes that way. And this is not a portable method.

You are reading an article on any website. You want to save the article somewhere. Perhaps there are sentences to underline.
Nothing on the web is likely to stay the way you first found it. Some contents die. And those contents can be very important.

This is why people use applications such as OneNote and Evernote.

You can tag notes in those applications, you can save websites content , and you can connect between notes...

These features are not what notepad supports.

And most of these apps also have a mobile app.
This way, people can take new notes, update, delete, etc., even while on the go.

If you know of such an application, please let me know.
If there is still no note-taking application available, I'll write it in Golang.
I can not believe this. Maybe I've tested 10 apps and none of them are compatible with screen readers. We are in the 21st century. It's so scary.

I've had success with using both of them at times.

Most definitely! I wouldn't be using them if they weren't. Especially
because I use Linklocker every day, multiple times a day,  to either
save or retrieve something. I use it with Firefox and NVDA, and it works
well. I do have a Pinboard account, which is used to store my Twitter
favorites.

pinboard is also very accessible. It's text and links. It could be
from the 90s.

Truthfully, I didn't get any warnings when I went to the page using
Firefox. However, sometimes a website can be compromised w/o an
author's knowledge. I did scan the site using Sucuri's sitecheck tool
& found no evidence for that. The site does contain both secure &
insecure (mixed) content, & http traffic is not redirected to https,
so perhaps this is what Malwarebytes is flagging. Looks to me as
though the site hasn't been updated in a veyry long time, which also
leaves open the possibility of a compromise w/o the creator's
knowledge, but, again, I don't see evidence of that.

Your best course of action when you get what you believe may be a false
positive is to use the website virustotal.com to have the file or link
scanned.  It's not unusual at all for a couple of odd engines to come back
with false positives while the vast majority declare something clean.  If
you've got between 0 and 10 of about 80 engines saying something is
positive, they're probably giving false positives.  When something is really
malicious a virustotal scan will "light up like a Christmas tree" with
engines declaring an infection.
