Thanks for all responses. Problem not resolved. I’m using a Bluetooth keyboard. Tried unchecking the

“(Trap All Non-Command Gestures”. I’ve uninstalled NVDA and reinstalled it. I’m very familiar with Browse mode and know that I need to be in it to do single key navigation. Since yesterday’s MS Edge and Windows updates, I can’t always tell if I’m in browse mode. When I press the NVDA key and the spacebar, NVDA goes silent and I get no audio feedback. Sometimes, Alt/Tabbing will get NVDA audio going again. MS Accessibility Desk was no help at all. Not sure what to do at this point.

Do you get unknown also if you use mozilla thunder bird? I did at one time have nvda not speak in web pages and mozilla thunder bird and I think around that time nvda saying unknown down on the task bar. It gave the same sort of problems as mentioned below. but I found out that the settings in mozilla had got corrupted etc some how and affected quite a few programs more Mozilla based and some others. I then deleted out the settings under %appdata% then re installed the program or 2 then it fixed it. but if i just uninstalled then setup over it again it did not.

But before or was it after that when the following was typed in below it fixed the same sort of problems having those problems.

But that was for mozilla settings.


Then after that come the com fixing tool but some times does not seem to work yet when typed in it does?

That was for a windows 10 machine at that time.

Troubleshooting - NVDA says “unknown” or “pane” in all of your browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email client and other places
If for some reason you have problems with NVDA saying “unknown” or “pane” check for the following symptoms:
•
In all of your browsers, or the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, no matter what you do, you still hear “unknown” or “pane”.
•
In the browser, email client and other menus you notice you cannot get into your menus, or you are unable to use the quick navigation keys
•
When you have been told the page is loaded and notice strange behaviour
•
Mozilla Thunderbird saying unknown while you try to navigate it
•
Your applications key does not work with it being spoken out and other strange behaviour in Windows
•
The running applications icons are not being spoken out
It might be a good idea to do the following:
Please note: If you are hearing “unknown” or “pane” (as discussed above) NVDA might seem like it is still working properly but it may not be completely in Windows and other programmes.
You could try the following solution which will allow you to re-register your dll files in case they are causing the problem.
Press the Windows key then type the following into the search box. Type in “command prompt”. Once you have located command prompt, in the search results, press the Applications key to bring up the context menu. Arrow down to select “run as administrator” and press the Enter key. This will take you to a command prompt window. This will not be spoken out. You may need sighted assistance for this.
Type in the following command
for %x in (c:\windows\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %x
This should re-register all components in the system32 folder.
When it is finished, you can close the command prompt window with the Alt + F4 key. You should notice now where NVDA was saying “unknown” as in some examples given, NVDA should now read the icons in the running applications area of Windows, speak the content of the webpage and menus, and also in Mozilla Thunderbird and other places in Windows including the Windows applications context menu.
Run COM Registration Fixing tool
If you are getting any of the following problems below - with Windows unregistering some of the files needed by NVDA - the following tool section in NVDA will get you out of trouble. To access this tool press the NVDA key + letter N while NVDA is running. Arrow down to the tools menu. A submenu will come up. Arrow down to the menu called Run COM Registration Fixing tool... then press the Enter key.  It should register the files needed by NVDA.


Let us know what happens. I tlooks as though the tool did not work so you could try typing it in through the command prompt make sure all directions are followed correctly I know that has done the trick on the machine if the tool did not work for some reason.


The settings for mozilla seemed like a similarbug.

I agree with your comments regarding LibreOffice. OpenOffice Calc may be
a good alternative and if people find that it's doing what they need
they should certainly continue to use it. However, LibreOffice receives
many more updates with bug fixes and feature additions. If there's ever
a chance for accessibility in Calc and Writer to be improved we're
likely to see that happening in LibreOffice before OpenOffice.

Due to community feedback, I’m releasing Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.5 emergency patch for Edge 79 users. This patch is applicable to NVDA 2019.2.x only (NVDA 2019.3 beta 2 and later includes support for Edge 79 stable). As this is an emergency patch, coupled with the fact that latest stable release is 20.01 which supports NVDA 2019.3 or later, this version will not show up via Add-on Updater.

Yes I use chrome on mac os, didn't much care for it on iOs but I have it. And I use chrome on windows, not as my default, but it works. Use it for my twitch stuff as it is just easy to deal with and all of my pages and bookmarks sync over.

Are you definitely in Browse mode?  If you press NVDA+spacebar does NVDA change between Browse mode and focus mode and back?  If you can manually change to Browse mode, do the single letter navigation keys work then?  If so, look in NVDA's browse mode settings (NVDA+control+b).  There are several which affect when NVDA changes modes, particularly "Enable browse mode on page load", "Automatic focus mode for focus changes" and "Automatic focus mode for caret movement".  Those can all be enabled or disabled.

Are you using an internal keyboard?  Though I'm very doubtful it would matter, I don't want to leave the question unasked.
 
Also, NVDA has a setting in browse mode settings that is a check box and says,
Trap all non-command gestures from reaching the document.
That setting shouldn't cause any problems but if the check box is checked, try unchecking it.

What do you mean by not stable?  Not all add-ons working with it isn't a matter of stability.  it is a matter of compatibility and probably has to do with those add-ons not yet being compatible.  but it is likely stable in that it works properly in general and doesn't crash more than a stable program does.

 

I haven't tried it but in the past, I have found NVDA betas to generally be stable.

And there we have a problem joseph.

2019.3 is not stable yet.

Not all addons I use work with it just yet.

If it comes I will have to set it up with narator.

I may try later on today to do this again because I have all the cloud
boxes here.

Is there a standalone installer for edge like there is with chrome?

Huh! I didn't even know that existed. FYI, there are two radio buttons,
"immediately on display" and "after (X) seconds". Mine was set to
"immediately on display", so I can see how there would be a problem if
the other option is set, because the default time seems to be five
seconds. So that's definitely something to check, as it would be easy
enough for it to hit that if you've got a lot of mail coming in.

In mozilla thunder bird go to tools then options then display then
advanced then under there is a setting to change your time out of your
messages. You might have to tab or arrow around to find it to change it.


Mine here reads the unread message as it status until I open it. I

replied etc but would have to look as have not used it for a long time.

Thunderbird With 2019.3 Beta 2

The last version of Thunderbird that reads the status line and the
read/unread status   of messages properly is 60.9 or 60 something.

Does NVDA say unknown in browsers instead of reading you links and such when you press tab?

Reader mode in Chrome?

Using latest NVDA 2019.2.1 with latest Google Chrome, is there a command to into Reader mode, like yu can with iOS on the iPHone?

H! Now if Edge has office apps you can work with off line. That, I would like if I was in a situation where there’s no wifi!  Sarah, I did get the new edge.  If you use Chrome. I find Edge is the same. I’ll play around with it later. Like Chrome it’s responsive quicker then IE.  What I do not like, you have Bing shoved at you.

Well I am tryin to improve.

As for edge, it seems a mixed bad, I can't say I am total surprised but I was expecting better, just a little.

Edge has been configured.

For those that see office there are web apps which are sites in edge that can do things offline.

Edge it self does try to explain better than I am.

You can uninstall those to.

Once you link everything via your microsoft account on edge, your settings should stay so no need to reset.

What have you got your message time out set to? Mine is set to 5 seconds otherwise I think they show as read.


In mozilla thunder bird go to tools then options then display then advanced then under there is a setting to change your time out of your messages. You might have to tab or arrow around to find it to change it.


Mine here reads the unread message as it status until I open it. I think there was a setting in thunder bird so it could also save replied etc but would have to look as have not used it for a long time.

I'm on 68.3.1 with NVDA 2019.3 beta 2 and all message flags are read as usual.
