Re: Dropbox interfering with NVDA when reading Word files
David Griffith
Not at all stupid Clive.
First of all Windows plus B to get to the notification area / system tray. If you hear notification chevron you should press space on that to open up all your system tray icons to view. You can change settings so that your icons all show all the time but I will give instructions for that in another email if needed. Now cursor left or right until you hear DropBox. If for whatever reason you miss this and hear notification chevron again then press space on this to make sure all your icons are showing. As soon as you hear DropBox press the space bar. This should open up the context menu in DropBox’s case – it does on my system. From this menu select preferences. Tab down to the section where it talks about badges and set this to never show and your problems with opening Office documents should disappear.
N>B A regrettable feature of the system tray in Windows is that the key to open up the context menu varies. Sometimes it is enter, sometimes it is space as in this case and sometimes it is the application key. You need to experiment with each icon to see what works. David Griffith

Thanks David,
It always sounds stupid, but how do I get to Dropbox in the system tray?
Thanks, Clive

I don’t know if my original suggestion ever got posted but this problem disappeared for me when I went to DropBox preferences in the system tray and turned badges notifications to never show in the General tab.
I have never, since doing this, had had any issue opening Office Files of any kind in my DropBox under Windows.
I mention this again as it seems not to have been discussed as an obvious solution despite my trying to post it yesterday. David Griffith From: nvda@nvda.groups.io <nvda@nvda.groups.io> On Behalf Of Abbie Taylor
Shaun, I'm having the same issue as Clive. I usually open files directly in Word, no matter where they are. I still have this issue with files in Dropbox whether I'm opening them there or in Word. Fortunately, I don't need those files in Dropbox, so I've moved them to a different location.

Hi Clive. It depends which program you're in, what toolbars are present and what you would like to do. For example, there is a scanning program that you cannot operate unless you access the toolbars as there is no menu bar. But word has toolbars that people seldom need. So the question is do you need to access the toolbars? if so, what program are you trying to access? Cheers, Mo.

No. Jaws tandem is a problem for a lot of corporations and offices.

Or that's at least what they believe. That's why FS have created a way for customized non tandem installers.

So then I guess in short from a network admin would be is there a way to lock down the remote add on if it becomes part of nvda for security risk? or will it be safe as only when nvda is running it can be used then.
I guess you have to look at it from a network admin point of view. I think they can have it so add ons can not be installed etc if they do not want people to use them. if it does not become part of NVDA and only get added in certain cases to do work with I guess we will see before long.

Re: Elementary Question I'm afraid: How do I access the toolbars on screen with NVDA?
hi. I wish to preempt the following with the following statement. After my conduct on the windows list I am trying to be a little less abrupt. I am not sure how important toolbars are currently. I know that for a long time from windows 95 through to xp and even 7, toolbars had stuff on them that were found in menus and were conciddered by me and others as just clutter and you just turned them off. I have however heard conflicting things that they actually may actually be usefull but never use them myself. Most stuff is in a menu or ribbon or something. Then again I have never found something that I have really needed a toolbar before. I know there is a toolbars explorer addon and while I have had it installed I have yet to need a toolbar of any sort as such. Saying that, I have tweaks to menuise as much of the windows shell as I can, and everything I use like thunderbird I never need to access a bar bar status. With status itself in the traditional form changing, I am unsure how true it is for any bar in any program if its got a use or not. With a lot of things being web based especially with chromium type deals its probable we actually won't need a toolbar, at least not generally, I mean never say never but there are things we didn't need in the past, either through access or they didn't exist before and we got on without them. For example I never needed to login with an account and can get round with an apps account, then again I don't use all services and whatever, however there are always different ways of accessing windows even if microsoft wants you to do something else. Thats true of other companies to. The same is with toolbars. I have never needed to use one but it doesn't mean others may use them. I havn't needed to care if a command exists or not, but I will hold off judgement on if we need one or not. I have honestly never looked into that sort of thing and I most like never will unless it is something I frequently need.

Hi
Out of curiosity most installs of jaws I have seen are not on a huge network There might be lone machines I mean only a copy on one pc out of all of them on a network.
If so have they got it so the remote add on will not work on a huge network or some how have it disabled. I mean as in there version of the addon tandam. Or are they happy to let the person use a tandam remote part of jaws?
The reason I ask this is here in new Zealand the 3 large networks which are library networks have nvda installed on all of there computers. The APN K network 750 computers.Christ church libraries 390 computers Auckland libraries 600 computers all with nvda on them.
So I would be guessing they would have to lock down the remote add on some how if it was installed into nvda you would say for security purposes. I know if nvda is not running then it does not matter.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
home use etc does not matter but a large network might and might be one of the questions from them to know how to do it if part of NVDA.

We'll see what others say, but I am not aware of an
NVDA command to access tool bars. I vaguely seem to remember a JAWS
command being available but I never used it and I haven't seen anything about it
for a long time.
Sometimes, f6 will move you from pane to pane in a
Windows program and you can move to tool bars that way. I suspect other
times, you would have to use something like object navigation. Others who
know a lot more will, I expect provide information but this may give you things
to try.

Re: a question about the new edge browser
To be honest I am happy they didn't role all of it out today. I have been spending most of the morning updating 2 laptops and 2 desktop units. In these I had codecs, java, flash, windows update and store updates as well as office and some gps updates. In addition some of these units like my laptop and one of the desktops had spaciffic driver updates and its taken me 4 hours so its good its tomorrow.

Accessible password managers, again.
John Isige
Hi everybody. I'm back for accessible password manager recommendations again, because let's just say I was pretty unimpressed with Last pass, to put it mildly. It was difficult to access the setup, and when I went to a site simply to put in my username and password, let alone have it generate anything, the site kept logging me in and immediately logging me out. I know this was a Last Pass issue because removing Last Pass let me login to the site just fine again.
This was with the Firefox plugin, everything up to date. I need something that will: 1. Be easy to set up. 2. Have actual keyboard shortcuts. 3. Doesn't break logins. 4. Is accessible on the web, in case I need to look my password(s) up on a machine that doesn't have the manager. In theory, Last Pass does all of this, but it obviously didn't work for me. I'm not interested in tinkering with things, if it's not going to work the first time to save a simple username and password and log me in, I'm not particularly interested in screwing around with it to try and get it to work. I do have a Firefox account, and I'm pretty sure it can save login info, anybody know if it also does randomly generated secure passwords? Basically if anybody's got recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

Re: State of the NvDA Remote add-on: NV Access sent patches to add-on authors
I am not sure. There were at one point I think last year or maybe the year before people saying that someone used nvda remote to hack their computer moving round on a forum, but it could have been people fooling about. I am unsure if this is still the case but right now saving passwords saves them clearly in text files and I am not sure if you can generate a random key or not, maybe you can. I havn't fiddled with remote for ages now. I think actually that you can. Point is there is no encription on the remote and that could make the addon not secure in sertain situations. Saying that, to use remote you actually need nvda running on a system but still. That is probably the only argument. There was a thing on size of nvda itself, not everything can be core because of size.
