Yes, mine did, but this machine is nearly six years old now--my, how time does fly! I hear a lot of the newer ones now don't, though. I'd be lost without a CD Rom drive because my choir music from church still comes on CD's. I suppose, though, I could talk my choir director into getting Dropbox and we could share files that way if necessary, but for now, I can still use and rip the CD's he gives me on this machine using CDEX. that's good you can get external CDRom drives.

I use Cdex, but all I do is insert my CD, hit f9 and it starts ripping. I don't do anything else and I don't know how the program works aside from that. I find my ripped CD in the mp3 folder under users/music/mp3. Hope this helps. Oh, and this is under windows 10, but I used it like that under Windows 8 as well.

Do you use it with win ten or can you use other players like Winamp or what my computer came with was groove Music. Can I rip or burn with any of these players like goldwave groove music and winamp?

I think Zara is afraid of change. What helped me go from XP to windows 7 was a tutorial I bought from National Braille Press. I got the XP computer in 2005 and it died in 2011. That's when I went to windows 7. Then in 2015 I upgraded to windows 10 and have been here since then. I love learning new things and I hope Zara will learn to love new things too.

Hey Zara! Are you afraid of change?  The reason I’m asking you this. If you are and you are sayig you like xp. Trust me I’ve been there!  I was not so scared to go windows 7. But I was afraid of ten. I’m here on ten and still trying to adjust!  My 7 box sound card burned out. So did some of my usb ports.  That 7 box was going down the tube. Now I’m on ten.  I try to do things like I did with 7. Because I forget this is win ten.  It takes getting used to. You really need to let xp go.  I say this because Rosemarie is right one day your xp box wil bite the dust.  It will badly slow down on you it may not go on the web very well.  Trust me Zara I’ve been there. With my xp box it would not go on IE quickly. I had to give it to a sighted person.  Not trying to scare you Zara.  Reallity is you have to move on like it or not.

Security is also another thing.

A lot of breaches happened because of the updates not being as they should be.

Saying that, I actually do want to get a third party shell that I can use for windows which is like explorer.

The windows explorer shell is a little unstable at the moment.

If not replace the shell entirely, then some third party file manager I can use for serious shell work when explorer decides to be just that little bit cranky.

If I can get something simple and low cost that would be good.

Do such things exist?

I'd like an alternitive especially when the windows shell starts to misbehave.

Hi, Arleen,

I use a program called Anyburn to burn CD's. For ripping I use windows media player. Hit your windows logo key and type "windows media player" without the quotes and hit enter. I tried CDex but found it kind of complicated.

Hi list: Arlene here. How does one rip and burn cds with windows ten? I was trying to rip a cd with my new win ten computer.  I have a external disk drive. How does one find windows Media player? Do you use it with win ten or can you use other players like Winamp or what my computer came with was groove Music. Can I rip or burn with any of these players like goldwave groove music and winamp?

Hi, Arleen,

Windows Media Player ships with Windows 10 and can be found via a search.  If you want a shortcut to it on your desktop, then follow the instructions:
Adding Desktop Shortcuts Under Windows 10

There are scads of utilities for burning CDs, and which you may wish to use is not just a function of accessibility, but what type of CD, e.g., music, bootable, etc., you are intending to burn and whether you're doing the CD equivalent of a "mix tape" or trying to duplicate a CD.

Hmmm.

There are several ways to do things.

I used to use nero burning rom v6 fully cracked to do things.

But eventually to be legal I split it up.

cd burner xp has an installer without the open candy spyware in it and I use that for ripping.

Goldwave has a good file batch converter as well as a cd reader via cddb sites and I got that.

Its 40 dollars but its worth the cost for the cd reader and converter alone which is what I use it for.

Cdex has opencandy in it so I havn't tried it but there must be a portable somewhere.

You are supposed to do it all with mediaplayer but I have never bothered trying to doodle with this.

Not sure about a full solution but nero platinum is about 130 dollars us and it should be ok or it may not be.

I havn't used any suite of modules for ages.

Well I will hope microsoft will not have to many more issues like this one.

I don't really have the space to run a system for shell work, and my workstation was brought for multiple goings on.

However, if it continues, I may have to change things.

The stupid thing is all I want to use shell work for is navigating round the folder structure, playing music, sounds, things like that.

To be honest its why I have not yet converted my windows 7 laptop to linux.

I don't have the space right now but in the future, who knows.

You know Sean, can’t say I really blame you for getting a shell that may run 7 or xp. If you don’t go online with those. There’s things you can do with those shells. I know a friend who uses xp but he doesn’t put it online. He does his audio files with it. Or other things he had done when xp was our thing in the past. He said xp was more stable then other windows shells. He does have a windows ten computer.

To be honest, with the state of the windows 1903 shell as of late, I am seriously thinking about getting something that will be using xp or win7 for offline  shell work, the shell has got a lot better but go deep enough into a folder tree, say 2-5 levels down and things may not read because of a partial crash with explorer.

I don't use shell work to much but when I do it can be really annoying at times.

I really hope with 1909 update that now things are going to all be part of search that we don't get the issue where we get search breaking again with updates like happened before.

I am seriously not interested on restoring/roling back/ restoring/ reformatting to get rid of and to fix a problem that I never made in the first place.

Now I will always use the latest version of windows for online work but I am starting to wander, if maybe I should use if not older windows another shell for my file work if one actually exists.

Well my brother still uses an old clunker here when he is at home and its almost dead.

Saying that work has given him a monster workstation for his work stuff, and everything else he stores and handles on google so he does most of his serious work off his android phone and his tablet.

Zara There’s no way around it. If you want to stick with what you have. Then do so. But one day your old clunker is going to die! I don’t even know how you do it. You need to get yourself a new computer. Once you get a new computer. It will be different from xp.There’s all kinds of help if you get yourself a new computer.  Never be afraid to get a new updated computer.

Hi, Zara,

Get a new computer with windows 10 and update to the latest version of NVDA. One of these days that old clunker of yours will stop working and you’ll wonder why. I’m not trying to be mean but you can’t keep an old system that’s out of date now.
