Re: Styles toolbar placement?
Quentin Christensen
Hi Robert, I'm not sure if it's any easier, but you can also get to styles from the ribbon - press alt, h, f, y - which is the same number of keys, but you can at least press them one at a time (and no, I'm not even going to try and guess at Micrsooft's logic of their letter choice other than alt+h for the home ribbon 😀) Regards Quentin.

Re: nvda loses control of keys
Quentin Christensen
It looked like it happened in Firefox. Are you using the Mozilla apps add-on? If so is it the latest version and / or have you tried with the add-on disabled? I know I've seen this loss of focus issue before Christmas, but can't recall where we were at with tracking it down.

Re: New terminal features
Quentin Christensen
control+up and control+down arrow scroll the screen visually. You can use NVDA's review cursor to move around the text on screen. If you press NVDA+6 and turn off "Caret moves review cursor" then the review cursor won't get dropped back to the text caret if you do use control+arrows to change what is visible on screen. Regards Quentin.

Re: NVDA 2019.3 Beta 1 is out
And NVAccess is far from alone in having release numbers, based on initial projected release dates, that are not congruent with actual release dates.
Think of any one of the Microsoft Windows 10 releases and I think that 1507 (2015-July) was the only one to actually come out in its projected year and month. So long as everyone knows what the next release has been designated, and whether or not it has actually been released yet, the world marches on. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Most of the change we think we see in life is due to truths being in and out of favor. ~ Robert Frost, The Black Cottage (1914)

Re: NVDA 2019.3 Beta 1 is out
Quentin Christensen
Hi Kostadin, Late reply, but yes, you hit the nail on the head - we didn't want to rush the release out before Christmas and then all go on leave for a couple of weeks, so we felt it was best to push it to the new year. Initially our plan was to have it out last year, so it would have been 2019.3. By the time we realised it was best to push it to 2020, everyone knew of the next release as 2019.3 and importantly, it was being used in code in places like add-on compatibility flags. So, a bit messy, but in the end, our intention is for things to continue smoothly for users and figure the discrepancy between the release date and name is a minor issue against that continuity for users. Kind regards, and happy new year, Quentin.

Re: Two problems encountered in Nvda when using Google Docs
Quentin Christensen
Chiming in late to this thread. NVDA is reporting capital letters in Google docs for me, both in Chrome and Firefox. What I have found is that OneCore voices don't adjust pitch as much as other synthesizers so the default 30% increase in pitch for capital letters isn't as clearly audible a change. If you open NVDA's Speech settings and set beep for capitals or say cap before capitals, you should find these more clearly indicate the change of case. Re reporting of spelling errors, this is a known issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8155 I think it is something we need Google to expose before NVDA is able to report them the same way as in Word for instance. Kind regards Quentin.

Re: still ahving the issue of hitting space or enter on buttons unless I up and down arrow to them
Gene
Shift enter is a standard browser command, at least
it is standard on Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome and probably on some or
many other Windows and maybe other browsers. It opens links in a new
window and is used, among other things, to bypass a popup blocker if that is
keeping a link from opening because it triggers a popup.

Re: OCR
No, I mainly use Chrome's built in OCR because it is the best free option out there, so far. I don't really need software OCR because I just open PDF's using Microsoft word. And, pretty much all my OCR is done with web documents, so, yeah. As for my mail, I don't get snail mail. I use a service that will scan all of my incoming mail and sends me extremely high quality photos of the envelopes and otherwise. Took a while because of all the legal paperwork, but I don't OCR anything physical, anymore.

Good morning, Has anyone compared OCR software lately? I had someone ask about Omnipage 20. I know a few people use Abbyy Finereader, but I wasn't sure how they compare or what other options are out there currently. Kind regards Quentin. Automatically rounding words using a screen reader with Microsoft Word.
I couldn't find anything written on the web for this kind of thing, at all, so I chose to write up my own blog post. The post is below. Even though it's initially aimed at fellow writers, anybody can get some use out of it, I believe. My patreon link is at the bottom if anybody wants to donate. There's also a link in the below that explains what you get if you pledge. Enjoy the tutorial. Also, when citing this tutorial, link my post. It's never gonna come down, so it's safe to link.

Re: BARD Express with NVDA still don’t get along fully
Not sure if anybody else here is on the beta team, but the folks over there said they would tackle this issue after version 2 was out. For now, don't use advanced mode if you want the full anotation column to be read. Keep the view at simple mode, and then NVDA will read the full anotation. No telling when, and, if, this issue will ever get fixed.

Have you tried hitting shift enter? I have to do that when I want to hear the Catholic Mass from Heart of the Nation. I have to hit shift enter when I'm using internet explorer. Hope this helps somewhat. Rosemarie

That isn't at all necessarily true. In this
case, the demo functions exactly like the paid for version. it is just a
license for a limited time, one week.

I think the trial might be for a couple of weeks if I'm not mistaken.

Hello all,
When starting NVDA I get the message that the Windows 10 Essentials addon has a new version to be updated. However, when I try to update it, I get an error message saying it is not compatible with the version of NVDA I am running. When I go to the “check for updates” section under “help’, I get a notice that there are no NVDA updates available. What’s going on and how do I correct this to get the latest version of the Windows 10 Essentials addon?
Thanks,
Janet
