Screen Curtain: September 6th build, preparing for future NVDA releases #addonrelease

Hi all,

In about an hour from now Screen Curtain September 6th build will be released. This build is important because it includes a good news and a bad news (depending on how you view it):

  • Good news: Screen Curtain add-on is ready for NVDA 2019.3 (alpha form).
  • Bad news: this will be one of the last builds of this add-on.

As for this being a bad news for Screen Curtain add-on, not entirely a bad news: Screen Curtain add-on has found a new home, and that is latest NVDA alpha snapshot. As part of this transplantation, Leonard de Ruijter (the author behind routines in this add-on and allowing me to package his work as an add-on for field testing) rewrote major portions of screen curtain facility. Thus, if you are using latest NVDA 2019.3 alpha snapshot, today’s Screen Curtain add-on release will recognize this and not load itself.

As for today’s release being one of the last releases of Screen Curtain add-on: yes, although it won’t be until NVDA 2019.3 stable version is released that this add-on will be declared end of life. This is because there might be changes that will require me to adjust end of life strategy for this add-on. The repo will not be removed from my GitHub so people can study it once the add-on ceases active development.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Buttons and links not reading.

You probably got that damn optional update then support told you to reinstall windows.

Sadly windows10 at least from latest release or even before in some situations is not as atable like it once was.

The fact, that I was reduced from a good system to a total reformat to make a problem go away which is not generated by me is proof that windows as a serviced os has some disadvantages.

I am not saying go back to the older model but I do think for those that want it there should be an lts windows like mozilla stuff is.

That way you could get the latest lts, even have an option use it and update security till you had to update to the latest.

And while I don't mind the twice yearly updates, after my experience, I could go back to the older system way of doing things I think.

Hi guys.

I've just tried the portable version of NVDA and it does say buttons
and links before the link or button.

This is a copy that I made in March.

Monte, before putting another program on your machine, might I suggest
going to your control panel, add & remove programs, & see if you can
find any having to do w/sendspace. That might solve the problem w/o
the need of additional security software.

If not, feel free to contact me off list & let's see if we can't get you sorted.

Re: pesky pop-up

Monte,

I'd suggest using an adware scanner or malware scanner.   Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner (a dedicated, and free tool by the makers of Malwarebytes), and Zemana Antimalware all spring to mind.   I cannot speak to the accessibility of any of those since I have not yet needed to work with them with any clients.

pesky pop-up

Monte Single

Just like that waskally wabbit in the old cartoon.

Recently I started a download on sendspace before logging in.

As a result I now get, fairly often, pop-up   for jewellery or such.

I know it has to do with sendspace because it says send space in the pop-up message.

I am using current versions of  nvda and chrome in win 7.

How  do I wack this waskally wabbit?

Thanks,

Monte

Hi John,

I ran a fresh install of OS and before I ran the Microsoft Driver/Firmware package, I installed NVDA and it tested fine.  Once I installed the MS package, NVDA stopped working.  I stopped testing at that point as I know I can run NVDA in Portable mode.  If I had more time to test I would re-image and install each driver manually and test NVDA but unfortunately I had to deploy my test machine.

Re: NVDA and pausing for specific punctuation

I did just find the two topics related to this, and they are in the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users group.

This one, making oneCore voices read more like eloquence, is about the basics of trying to change parameters related to voice speed and other timing.

A closely related topic, Taking Ownership of System Files under Windows 10 , came about because getting permissions on the ini file that you have to edit is a non-trivial thing for OneCore voices.

As this is all synthesizer driven, and screen reader agnostic, it applies as much to NVDA as any other screen reader.

This was discussed recently, and at great length.   I thought it was on the NVDA group, but it might have been the JAWS group or Win10 for Screen Reader Users group.  It is as definitive as it can be that this is a synthesizer controlled function, and there was even discussion of how to edit .ini files to change this (which I wouldn't recommend).
