need to connect Alva BC640 - MY BRAILLE DISPLAY with NVDA

Moty Azrad

Dear all,

I go to to NVDA menu - settings – choose Braille and press on change.

I don’t see Alva or optelec in the list of Braille displays.

In the past – I do remember that Alva was the first braille display in the list.

I have Baum super vario 40 too and this Braille display I connect soon without any problems.

I went to device manager and choosed ports and open it I see there only usb super vario. Anyway, I used the application key and went to update driver.

I connect my Alva bc640 and select search not automatic but Browse, press some tabs and get a list of software button, press on it but can not find Alva or optelec in this list.

So, how do I connect my Alva bc640 with NVDA, THE LATEST version?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Rick, Yep, I have been with DAISY since 1997!

David, the document formatting is not working in Notepad++. The spell checking is working, but a bit slow to activate I hit Alt+p, down arrow to spell check, enter then , f for find next, enter, and I am taken to the next spelling error. Then activate the context menu and the suggestions are there.

Casey, I have the Windows spelling option enabled. Settings, device, typing, and the options seem to be enabled. However, in Notepad++ I do not see any effect.

Best

George

It would be nice if there was a hot key for a dialogue that would walk through the document to each error. If there

Re: anyone had this issue when updating the latest windows update aug302019

Hi I've recently updated to the latest version of windows 10 64 bit.
that is:
Microsoft Windows
Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.329)
I've had no problems with the start menu or the search system or even
with no other parts of the operating system.
I think up something here. I just got an update for my dotnet
frameworks version 3 and 4.
maybe the issue emerged becaused you hadn't installed the dotnet
framework update before you installed the operating system major
update. just give it a try.
have much fun.

Re: NVDA and spell checking in Notepad++

Hi George. I’ve played around with Notepad++ but not with that plugin.

You could try the built-in typing spell checker in windows if you haven’t already. It works in a similar way to how autocorrect  suggestions work on smartphones. The nice thing about it is that it works everywhere, and you can navigate suggestions with the left/right arrow keys.

Groups.io - Controls you receive in every message as well as controlling the messages you receive to begin with

This message, obviously, is not NVDA related, but related to using Groups.io, and for controls many may not know about.  I will post stuff like this occasionally, and it applies to any Groups.io group you may be subscribed to.

Since these controls occur at the very end of a message, after the user's signature if they're using one, many people are unaware that they even exist.  You get these in every message that lands in your inbox from Groups.io, and some of them are occasionally to frequently useful.  Others you'll probably never use whether you're an e-mail subscriber or web group reader.  I will place an asterisk ahead of the ones that you're likely to want to use on certain occasions, but will document all of them in the order they are presented.

View/Reply Online link with the topic number as part of the link -  Email users have no reason to use this because simply hitting reply allows them to reply via email.  If you want to use the web interface instead, then activate that link.

Reply to Group link - Again, not generally used by e-mail users since a simple Reply via e-mail does the same thing.

*Reply to Sender link - This one is really very handy.  If you want to reply to the sender and only the sender of that message via email, this is the way to do it.  When you activate that link it should cause your email client to automatically open a compose window with the subject prepopulated with the topic title and the to address being that of the sender of that message.  You can, of course, modify the subject as you see fit.  This makes private responses for any reason very easy to make.

*Mute This Topic link - Also very handy at times.  If a particular topic is of no interest to you or there's any other reason you don't want to receive any additional messages for that topic, activate this link.  It will block any additional messages from that specific topic being sent to you.

New Topic link - Email users will seldom, if ever, use this as you can just send to the posting address with a new subject to create a new topic.

Your Subscription link - if activated will open the subscription page for your account, if you are logged in to Groups.io in your web browser.  If not, it will take you to  the Groups.io login screen then directly to your Subscription page after logging in.

*Contact Group Owner link - if activated will open your e-mail client's compose window with the Owner address for the group prepopulated.  Saves having to type the owner address.

and, finally Unsubscribe link (which includes the e-mail address you're subscribed under as part of that link) - self-explanatory

The following does not apply to something you receive in every message, but is still important to know about.  Download and keep for your reference (pick your format):

Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx)

Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io  (PDF)

Both describe how you, as a Groups.io user, can exercise very tight control over what comes to your inbox from a given group in the first place.

I don’t use Notepad ++ but the normal way NVDA indicates spelling error sounds is through the Document formatting panel.

Use NVDA Control  and D to bring up that dialogue and make sure that indicate spelling errors is checked amongst the many options hosted there.

anyone had this issue when updating the latest windows update aug302019

Hi all.

Anyone had this issue.

1.  install latest optional update then restart.

The search box comes up and down, search does not work, nothing works.

The ms support guy says the profile is stuffed, trying to update on other systems yealds nothing wrong but even so, my system is screwed.

After a lot of badness, I had to reinstall.

This has fixed issues for now however, when starting nvda, hitting nvda n will not bring up the menu, the menu comes up then its thrown to the desktop and hitting nvda n again does not bring up the menu its gone and does not show.

If I click the system tray icon for nvda the menu shows, if I then exit that and hit nvda n the menu works as expected then I hit down arrow for preffs and it works.

This is now a new config, and I really hope the system does not corrupt its darn self next update.

An accessible ID3 tagger and file renamer.

John Isige

Hey all. Anybody have a recommendation for an accessible ID3 tagger/file renamer? Basically I'd like something that will get the info, if it can, and fill everything in and rename directories per my specification, instead of having to do it all myself. No, not iTunes, assuming it can even do it. I've tried ID3 Renamer, and though it's seems fairly accessible, I can't for the life of me figure out how to point it at a directory. Free would be good but I'll consider paying if I can try it first. So far the jobs have been small enough that I've just done them by hand.

I could fill it in myself, it's downloads from Document Records so the info's easy enough to find, but that would be really boring. They really should have done it themselves, but they didn't, so here I am with three albums worth of songs to tag and rename, and I'll be downloading stuff from them in the future. So I guess I should finally find a working solution for this.

You can also hit Windows+up arrow after opening your document. I don't know if that keystroke only pertains to windows 10 and I'm not exactly sure what it does--I think it maximizes the screen or window--but it works very well here. I mainly only have to do it, though, when I'm working on a document I've already saved. I usually don't have to do it in a new document that I'm just starting out on. I hope this helps.

I assume you have word wrap on.  It's wrapping about every two words because the window is so small.  There are commands to make the unmaximized window larger but I don't recall them,  A sighted person can also do so with a mouse.  The maximized window takes up most of the screen regardless of how the size of the restored window is set.

Re: Addon development: how to switch focus to another NVDA object?

Hi,

This is the (currently in vacation) chief admin of add-ons list speaking...

There is an ongoing discussion (offlist) on updating the NVDA add-ons list description.

As for the problem posed by Sam: are there ways to use JAB for retrieving control type information? That might be more preferable, given that sometimes object navigation emulation (because that's what Sam is trying to do at the moment) might not work on all apps.

Let's discuss this further on the add-ons list (and if needed, on development list if it turns out there are things to change from NVDA itself).

Cheers,

Joseph

Monthly Group Rules Reminder for the NVDA Group (nvda@nvda.groups.io)

nvda@nvda.groups.io Group Moderators <nvda@...>

This is the NVDA Group Monthly Reminder Notice, which is meant to re-emphasize the NVDA Group Rules.

The central purpose of the NVDA Group is discussing how to use NVDA, either configuring NVDA's settings or familiarizing oneself with its modes and commands.  Discussions about which programs are accessible using NVDA, NVDA add-ons, NVDA tutorials and documentation, and configuring synthesizers or Braille displays for use with NVDA are also permitted.  Like all screen readers, it is a tool for accessing something else, and really serves no other purpose.  Its function as an accessibility tool is, of course, its reason for being.

It is presumed that the majority of members will be using NVDA, and possibly other screen readers, as part of their daily routine.  This being the case, before you post a message you have to consider whether the question you are about to ask is actually about NVDA itself, or about the program you’re using it to access.  Questions of the form, How do I use . . . with NVDA?, are very seldom about NVDA, but are almost always about the program being accessed with NVDA.

The NVDA Group has a Chat Subgroup (see: https://nvda.groups.io/g/chat, Group Email Addresses section) that has as its purpose the asking of virtually any “off-topic” question about anything you can think of, including just socializing.  It should be used for exactly that purpose. The Chat Subgroup has generally had technically focused topics related to using features of the programs that one is using NVDA to access or about other programs that have proven helpful.  Only those who are already members of the NVDA Group can subscribe to the Chat Subgroup.

Before choosing where to post, please ask yourself the question, “Is what I’m about to ask or offer directly related to controlling or using NVDA, or whether a specific program is accessible with NVDA?”  If that can be answered, “Yes,” then post to the NVDA Group, and if the answer is, “No,” then the topic belongs in the NVDA Chat Subgroup.

In order to make your experience, and those of all other members, as pleasant as they can be, please follow these practices:

1.  Use threaded or conversation view in your e-mail client program or webmail and reading through the entirety of a topic before replying.  It gets you completely up to speed and avoids a lot of repetition.  If you choose not to use threaded/conversation view, please take the time to read through all messages from the group that are in your inbox prior to adding any reply to the group.  It’s the only way you can be sure you’re up to speed on any topic when not using threaded/conversation view.

2.  Reading through all new topics before replying, as topics have a tendency to get split upon occasion and often an answer ends up being in a separate topic.

3. If you have reason to believe your question has likely been asked and answered in the past please search the Group Archive first before asking it again.  Step-by-Step instructions for searching the group archive using the Groups.io search or a web search engine of your choosing: Searching_the_NVDA_Group_Archive.docx.  Please consider using a web search first for questions that have almost certainly been asked frequently and for which myriad answers, often in the form of tutorials, already exist.

4.  Think very carefully about the title you are going to give any topic you post.  The topic is the first (and, sometimes, only) thing a member sees and that may be how they decide if they’re going to look further.   Generic titles, such as “Help Me!,” are not helpful because they give no idea about what.  Compare that to something like, “NVDA not reading Excel cell contents,” or, “NVDA setting for pronouncing numbers,” where the exact issue where help is needed is front and center.   Even something like, “Need help with the following . . .,” lets the reader know that you are going to present a list of issues.

5.  Please avoid, “What is the best . . .?,” topics, because what qualifies as “best” is entirely subjective.   Topics of this sort are also always chat topics.  If you know you have specific needs then asking, “What {insert program type here} has the following features . . .,” is much more descriptive.   If you want to know what programs people like for a specific task, asking, “What’s your favorite . . . and why?,” is far more likely to get you the details you want to have.  Notice that none of the above questions ask about whether a program is accessible with NVDA.  If you’re asking something like, “Which {insert program class here} is accessible with NVDA?,” then it’s a main group topic.

6.  Any topic that is not about using NVDA to accomplish a task, or how to control NVDA, belongs in the chat subgroup, not the main group.  All questions about how to use the specific features of a program that you’re using NVDA to access, but not about NVDA itself, belong in the chat subgroup.

Respectful, even if slightly heated, disagreements will occur occasionally and will be tolerated provided what is described next does not occur.  Flaming, name calling, instigating arguments for their own sake that do nothing to advance anyone’s knowledge, pointed rudeness, and similar boorish behavior will not be tolerated.  If at any point one of you happens upon a message anywhere in the NVDA Group sphere, main or chat, that fits the preceding description then please report it to the group owner either via e-mail at, nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io, or, if you read via the web interface at https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topics, then use the Report this message option that’s a part of the More button at the end of each message.  Please don’t add a protest message the topic.  If we receive a report and agree with it, the issue will be taken care of promptly.

If you find the amount of traffic from this Group, or any Groups.io group, overwhelming, then please download and read:

Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx)

Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (PDF)

Each of you has the ability to mute topics that don’t interest you, get digests instead of individual messages, or to set up topic preview for yourself via the Following Only and First Messages Also features used in conjunction with each other.  It is up to you to use those to manage your e-mail as you see fit.  It’s almost certain that there will be plenty of topics on the chat subgroup that will not be of the least interest to you as an individual. Setting up topic preview lets you pick and choose what you want to continue to see, and this function can be used on any Groups.io group.

Sincerely,

Nimer Jaber                                     Brian Vogel
