Are there some shared NVDA components installed somewhere else I should remove before trying again?

Hello Everyone,

I seem to be unable to open important settings dialogues, such as General or Speech, in NVDA 2019.2.

I am running Windows 10 Home (latest 1903 update).

I have already removed and re-installed NVDA from the ground up without success.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

The feature is built into the latest 2019.3 snapshot. You have to go to the input gestures and set the gesture you want to use.

You mean the built-in screen curtain in the latest alphas?  There's no user interface for it yet, that is correct - you can enable it by editing the appropriate file.  If you're not sure, hang in there and wait - it will have options in the settings dialog as the add-on version does now.

Kevin, it appears that some, but not yourself, live by the old adage, "When all else fails, read the instructions."

There's a very good reason that the acronym RTFM came into existence.  Would that more did, even if that's only skimming it or looking in the table of contents/index when issues arise.

Re: possible fix for the problem with nvda and thunderbird

Kevin Cussick

Hi, I have posted this before sorry for anyone who already has seen this but it might just help. using speedy fox might help as well. I have around 10 machines that I maintain and just do not see this on any of them. and they all tb on them. anyway some instructions below this is not my own work so I can't take any credit if it does help. good luck.

General sluggishness with Thunderbird. I have a feeling, though,
that this is a Thunderbird issue and nothing to do with NVDA.
Try disabling Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Enable Global Search and
Indexer. Note that this isn't accessibility or screen reader specific,
but I personally found that global search didn't help me and was a
performance killer.

Hello all,

I took ownership of my Braille display - a Braille Edge 40 - yesterday, and thus far, I've been able to work out how to do most things I want/need to do with it.

However, I'm having trouble inputting German Braille. When, for example, I try to insert "ä", i get "`" instead. Braille output, however, is fine. I've had a look at the Braille Table files, and it would appear that dots345 is assigned to at least two things, and I'm assuming this is where the problem is: NVDA (or rather Liblouis) doesn't know which one I want to enter.

Does anyone know where I'm going wrong, or if there is some sort of fix for this problem? Please keep in mind that I only started learning German at the start of the year, and am completely new to German Braille.

Thanks in advance,
Sascha

Re: German Braille Input

Hi Sascha and list,

the signs fort he Umlauts differ whether you are using six-dot or 8-dot braille.

I usually don’t use braille input so would have to research the exact braille signs myself.

From your description I would guess your braille table has been set to 8-dot braille which is the normal setting for computers.

You could do two things here: try to set the braille table to six dot braille.

-          Input the umlauts in 8-dot braille.

Hope that helps to see things a bit clearer.

Kind regards,

Bianka

Re: Can't open settings dialogues in NVDA 2019.2.

Quentin Christensen

I haven't had any other reports of it, so I expect the issue must not be too widespread.  SO, what I would try firstly is restart NVDA with add-ons disabled, and see if that makes a difference.  If it does, check whether there are updates for any of your add-ons, and also try disabling all your add-ons and enabling them one at a time to see which is the culprit.  Failing all that, send me a copy of your NVDA log as while it might not give you any audible errors, there's hopefully something in the log.

Ok, so first, to restart NVDA with add-ons disabled:  Press NVDA+Q, down arrow to restart with add-ons disabled and press enter.  If you can't get into the NVDA+q dialog - either because you disabled it in settings previously, or because it's one of the dialogs not working, press WINDOWS+R to bring up a run dialog, type the following and press enter:

nvda --disable-addons

To get a copy of your log, look in your %temp% folder.  To get to that, press WINDOWS+R type %temp% and press enter, and look for the nvda.log and nvda_old.log files, and send both to info@...

It might also be worth starting NVDA with log level debug to capture as much as possible before grabbing those logs.  To do that, press WINDOWS+R and type:

nvda --debug-logging

Note you can combine that with disabling addons by using both flags:

nvda --disable-addons --debug-logging

Kind regards

Quentin.

I don’t have a lits of commands but it works like any other program. The only thing you can’t do with the mail app is to organize messages into different folders like you can in other programs. Other than that, it’s not that much different. It’s pretty easy to set up. See the other Brian’s message on setting up the mail app.
