Re: Couple questions about portable version of NVDA

Rui Fontes

Hello!

You have three levels of quality for almost all voices...

If you want to have always the Vocalizer voice, you just have to install the drivers and desired voices add-ons.
After that, in a machine with a installed version of NVDA and Vocalizer Expressive, you can activate a portable license of Vocalizer for the portable version of NVDA in the PEN...

Any question you can check the manual or send us a mail to tiflotecnia@...

Best regards,

Rui Fontes

Hi all,

If this is what I think it is, then Dan isn’t alone in facing this situation: report object descriptions is off. Several people (including I, the current maintainer of this add-on) have talked about this in the past, and I even wrote an FAQ entry in the add-on guide about it.

Cheers,

Joseph

My general advice in situations like this is to "work backward" uninstalling and reinstalling things, doing the easiest thing first, and working back if that does not fix the issue.

In this case, it would be uninstalling and reinstalling the SPL add-on to see if that resolves the problem.

If not, you're faced with next starting NVDA with only that add-on enabled, to try to determine whether there could be some sort of interaction between it and one of your other add-ons.

If that doesn't fix it, next comes nuking NVDA itself (which, of course, nukes all of your add-ons, too), then reinstalling NVDA and the SPL Add-On only, to see if that works.  If it does, then keep installing the other add-ons you were using, one by one, checking after each to see if SPL is screwed up again.

Thorough diagnostics are tedious, so you hope that the first or second options above get you an answer before you have to resort to the last one.  Sometimes wiping the slate entirely clean and installing again will fix an issue and you'll never know what triggered it in the first place.

Hi

there used to be a pod cast that NVACCESS used to do but was under nvda-project.org at the time before the name change.

I believe it stopped a few years back where some one gave a link. after that Joseph  had done a few of them based on the whats new section in the user manual on the beta releases before the stable.

Lately before the stable releases I have been doing short tutorials on some of the features and posting them to my website  under the nvda sections.

The main website is http://www.accessibilitycentral.net

it is a combination of NVDA tutorials and blindness related material.

If you book mark any of the nvda pages in the tables will take you to the rest of them and the home key will take you to the main page.

So there is no podcast from the developers of NVACCESS at present.

the closest I would get to it would be copy and paste the whats new section in 2019.2 and either convert it into a synthetic voice then post to a page. But after time It would have to go as I only have 2 gig of room on my drop box account.

SPL and NVDA

Dan Kerstetter

I have two Windows 10 machines with the latest Station Playlist, latest NVDA and SPL add-on.

On one machine, NVDA works just fine in the playlist window.  All is read as it should be.  On the other, however, when I scroll through items in a playlist, all I hear is unchecked or checked.  As far as I can tell my settings are the same on both machines.  Is there anything I can do to make the odd ball machine read correctly?

Thanks in advance.

Re: NVDA crash.

Gene

You don't have to do that.  You could just use a different voice a little before the problem text and then read a little past where the crash occurred.  That's so that if Eloquence crashes before it gets a chance to speak what caused the crash, you won't make it crash again.  So read maybe a sentence or two after the part where it crashes.  Then stop reading and switch back to the Eloquence.  It is one specific bit of text that causes the crash.  It isn't repeated, its something a character says and there is no reason to expect that he will say it again.  It has nothing to do with where you are in the text.  Anywhere, in any text, that that exact set of characters occurs, Eloquence will crash.  But it is extremely uncommon because, it was text written in a dialect for what one character said.

Re: writing papers using NVDA and google docs?

I would definitely suggest having a look at,  Using Google Drive with JAWS and NVDA - Paths to Literacy, just to review a lot of stuff about using Google Drive and the various G Suite applications (including Docs)

The accessibility setup information for using Google Docs with NVDA (and a number of other screen readers) is here:  https://support.google.com/a/answer/1631886?hl=en#h3_drive_web.  Look through all the links under this section on Google Docs.  They suggest you change the start NVDA keyboard shortcut if you have it set up because it conflicts with a commonly used Google Docs shortcut.

Keyboard shortcuts for Google Docs can be found here:  https://support.google.com/docs/answer/179738.  Expand the PC Shortcuts section.

Specific to your question, see Count the words in a document  (which includes lines, page, etc.)

And further detailed discussion regarding how to use Google Docs (or any of the G Suite apps) should be moved to the Chat Subgroup, as it's not going to involve NVDA except tangentially.  (Even this message has the tiniest bit of direct NVDA related content.  It's virtually all about Google Docs).

writing papers using NVDA and google docs?

Josh Kennedy

Hi…

When I am writing in google docs, how can I, using NVDA, tell what line and what page I am on in my document so I can know at all times exactly how long my composition is?

In Microsoft word I could just check the status line but I am not sure how to do this in google docs. Josh

This topic is now locked, as it is off-topic for the NVDA Group.  Do not start another topic on this group about Ribbon Disabler.  It will be locked as well.

The purpose of the NVDA Group and expectations of both administration and members, are discussed in detail in the Administrative Notice, Important:  List Conduct.  I suggest every member read it, again, and give it careful consideration.

Before sending any message, please ask, “Is what I’m about to ask or offer directly related to controlling or using NVDA, or whether a specific program is accessible with NVDA?”  If the answer is yes, the message is appropriate for the NVDA group.  If the answer is no, then the topic belongs on the Chat Subgroup or somewhere else entirely where it is on-topic.  The Chat Subgroup subscription address is chat+subscribe@nvda.groups.io and the posting address is chat@nvda.groups.io.

Virtually every member of this group is an active user of NVDA as an accessibility tool.  That does not make a question about something else, even if you’re using NVDA to access it, about NVDA.  Questions regarding how to access something with NVDA are not the same as asking about how to control a given program or get to a feature in it via the keyboard.

To those who have concerns regarding the list or its administration, contact the group owner at nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io.
