Windows 95 had speech if the screen-reader generated it.  I used three different screen-readers with Windows 95 and they all could generate speech through the sound card.  This was a function of the screen-reader in Windows 95.  It was not a question of Windows.  I don't recall what the situation was in Wihndows 3.1. but Windows 95 was the first version of Windows as its own more or less operating system. Previously, earlier versions of Windows were, as I understand it, much more closely associated with DOS.  Someone with more technical knowledge may wish to explain this more clearly.

Regarding MSAA, it was incorporated into Windows 98.  In Windows 95, though it came without MSAA, Microsoft released a file that you could run that would add it to Windows 95.

Well, windows 98 was the first one with synthetic speech through the
sound card before then you had to have speech from an external unit.

I with older systems that there were ways to make windows and earlier
things than xp talk, some of them I have heard about.

Windows 3.1 was a glorified dos shell really.

In windows 2000 aparently the first narator ever was made.

While microsoft was active in the later stages of windows 95 through to
98 it really didn't seem to show much interest till windows 98.

Everyone and thing had its own way of accessing the os.

With windows xp and up microsoft started standardising accessibility it
may have happened before that but xp is when I started noticing.

It got better and better to a point in windows 7, but everyone had their
own intercepters, their own interface, and their own way.

Its only in windows 8 and later microsoft seems to be committed to
actually doing something, and with 10, they want to show off.

I am sure that apple and then google probably changed it for them.

Hi Gary,

unfortunately Adriano didn't tell where to find the file "weather first
settings.html".
I've found it under:
j:\AppData\Roaming\nvda\addons\Weather Plus\doc where j:\ is my users
directory. The right folder for You is "en"
And in this folder there is the file "weather plus first settings.html".

Subject: [nvda] Weather Plus 5.0 update available

Hi to every one,

After more than 2 months it is back in operative :)

Changes in this new version:

. Weather Plus now uses the APIXU API, in my opinion better than the
previous one; To work requires an API key, read the Weather Plus First
Settings.html for instructions (highly recommended).
#Changes in the Weather Plus Settings window:
. Removed old checkbox "State of barometric pressure".
. Replaced with new checkbox "Add cloudiness value"; It gives you the
percentage of cloudiness.
. Added new checkbox "Add precipitation value"; It gives you the amount in
millimeters or inches of precipitation.
. Removed old checkbox "Indicates the wait with a beep while you search
for the latest bulletin"; Left active by default.
. Added to the Astronomic informations; Time of moonrise and moonset.
. Added new button "Rename";
To rename cities more conveniently.
. Improved function of the "Test" button; Now accept some commands to
facilitate the search for cities; These new commands are described in the
help function that can be called up with F1.
. Added button to manage your API key.

Weather Plus can update itself, however you can download it directly from:

or from the pages:

If the file extension arrives as .zip, please correct it with .nvda-addon.

Cheers

Re: Invisible Dropbox pop-ups

Gene

I suspect that these windows come up when something changes, someone adds a file or removes it that you are sharing folders with.  It may come up when the program is first run, but one person reported that the window comes up about every half hour, another person reported about every hour.  I doubt there is any general rule about how often they come up.

The following may have a useful suggestion but my understanding of just what is occurring may not be correct.  But whatever is done about this unreadable window problem, my suggestion about how such information is displayed may be useful.

Probably what is needed is the ability to turn such notifications completely off or alter it in some sort of accessibility setting so the information can be checked periodically by the blind person to see announcements about what has changed without them being read automatically.  I expect this can be done.  The information could be displayed in the system tray so a blind person can go to it and read it without a help balloon or a toast announcement being generated.  Information can change constantly if desired in the system tray without a screen-reader reading it if it just changes.  This should be an accessibility setting that can be turned on in preferences.  Should it be on by default when a screen-reader is detected?  I'll leave that for others to discuss.

I think it is important for entities to develop a unified position on this feature and whether it should be on automatically when a screen-reader is detected.  In general, as things are, those who are complaining are just complaining about removing the wwindow.  But that doesn't address the underlying problem, making the information available and not intruding on screen-reader use.

Hi all,

I'm running Dropbox v68.3.92.  Approximately every half an hour or so,
NVDA's focus is being moved to a Dropbox window which only seems to
contain a single, blank edit field.  The window doesn't seem to stay on
the screen, but focus isn't returned to where it was previously after it
disappears.  In fact, NVDA reports it as taking up a rectangle of 0
pixels, so I don't know if anything shows up visually on the screen at all.

As you can imagine, having to dismiss these boxes several times per day
is irritating.  Does anybody have a work-around?

It should be made clear that if you use the shortcut, you will run the program and you will see these announcements again.  You would have to close the program again from the system tray after using it not to see them.

Hello all,

One last message to say that it did work. I am now able to cite multiple sources. It would not have occurred to me that the button would only appear after the first source had been selected and that I would need to eventually go back and add it after the 2nd source but that is how it works for screen reader users, apparently.

Thank you! I have a functional reference manager for the first time in my academic life.

To others asking about the application, it  is useful in academic writing and given the number of students I have seen post to this list I can imagine a guide would be helpful. It would also be nice for those not on the list who get no help from their own colleges and universities but run a search or use NVDA and look  for NVDA tutorials related to being a student.

For your solution to the multiple references, I see no buttons. Are you in the classic citation view or no? What operating system are you using? I would love to figure this out with your help.

As a side note, I would really like if we could pool our expertise and write up a guide for Gene'S website. I feel strongly that academic Programs like this are just as important to explain and support as more basic ones.

I have another problem. Do you know how to change a book entry to book section, and then add authors and editors? When I change the editor field to an author, or vice versa, wrong author is changed.

Hi all,

To revive this thread, I can give a partial answer to the original question and need to ask one of my own.

If you go to the zotero desktop application and under preferences find citation then word processor and check the "use classic citation  checkbox, you will get a dialogue in word that is 99% accessible.

The only thing that has not worked for me is citing multiple works in a single in text citation. In the classic citation dialogue there is an add button that NVDA does not see with any cursor and in the default dialogue I hear only a string of HTML code rather than "unknown."

i have posted to the zotero forum and will let you know what i hear back.

Does anyone else have experience here with zotero or any other free citation manager?

It was a huge help to have this on my last paper and I'd like to see it work or have access to something equivalent for academic writing.

Hi to every one,

After more than 2 months it is back in operative :)

Changes in this new version:

. Weather Plus now uses the APIXU API, in my opinion better than the previous one; To work requires an API key, read the Weather Plus First Settings.html for instructions (highly recommended).
#Changes in the Weather Plus Settings window:
. Removed old checkbox "State of barometric pressure".
. Replaced with new checkbox "Add cloudiness value"; It gives you the percentage of cloudiness.
. Added new checkbox "Add precipitation value"; It gives you the amount in millimeters or inches of precipitation.
. Removed old checkbox "Indicates the wait with a beep while you search for the latest bulletin"; Left active by default.
. Added to the Astronomic informations;
Time of moonrise and moonset.
. Added new button "Rename";
To rename cities more conveniently.
. Improved function of the "Test" button; Now accept some commands to facilitate the search for cities; These new commands are described in the help function that can be called up with F1.
. Added button to manage your API key.

Weather Plus can update itself, however you can download it directly from:

or from the pages:

If the file extension arrives as .zip, please correct it with .nvda-addon.

Well to be honest what we really need to remember is why we got jaws,
before freedom scientiffic became the real bad boy it is now, and other
readers.

Back in the dos days there was no accessibility at all.

Nothing much came from microsoft's end.

This continued through to windows 95.

In windows 98, microsoft started the active accessibility libraries
which improved things but not that much.

In 2003 or there abouts with help from gwmicro the direct chain manager
was done so you could handle readers in a multiple chained process,
before that you made your own chains but they were unstable.

Basically the first screen reader was your video card, which was part of
the next reader up till the end, the last screen reader was your video
card.

Start one out of sync, run 2 at once, remove and or uninstall things in
an unordered fashion and you broke the chain.

There were 2 ways to fix this.

1. remove the chain, reinstall the video drivers and make another one.

Or just reformat.

Which I did a lot of.

You needed technical experience to make the reg files for the chain and
while I got dolphin support to construct one, it was as fragile as a
glass window, and not that good.

The dcm became mirror drivers in vista and 7 and then in windows 8
microsoft started the universal access librarys we all love and loath.

The reason jaws and others existed was simply because microsoft didn't
come to the party till late.

Even when xp to 7 came up, microsoft never really put much into narator.

It was just after the laws came in going against those that didn't make
stuff accessible.

It probably also helped that after the death of outspoken and all the
new laws, apple not only showed that it could make an accessible reader
but showed off that it could make something better than waht was about
at the time.

Voiceover has its limits of course but it is in all the programs and
devices now.

Google, same with talkback but there were others at first in droid.

So eventually microsoft had to move.

The reason we are seeing the reader industry shrinking now is possibly
because microsoft is pulling its weight and attempting to catch up to
all the rest.

Now narator is nothing against nvda but its close.

Narator is not jaws.

But its big enough as a bold new kid on the block, not fully grown mind
you that it is shifting mountains if only smaller ones.

Time will tell with businesses if this means the death of jaws or other
readers, sadly dolphin seem to be in no hurry to improve at any speed so
sadly they may die.

I have used their stuff for ages now but still.

Of course the fact we are using a more or less web based interface both
inside of our oses now and online on websites and web based programs
does help.

There was a time where anything went and while there are a few bad
acters about its not as bad a landscape as it was 5 years back.

There is one end of the road in the screen readers though.

And this isn't actually jaws, either we have reached the inovation curve
and thats not likely because nvda is still inovating things.

Its almost like the comercial guys can't be bothered either that or ms
is moving to fast with their current model.

Or maybe we can accept that most of them have just about done everything
they set out to do and who knows.

As an os, while I really like win10's ease of use, search, and a few
other apps, and shortcuts, the only reason I wouldn't go back to 7 is
simply because 10 in some ways needs less shortcuts to get things done
and less key presses.

On the flipside without my hacking tweaking tools win10 would be quite
hellish.

On the systems I admin which are not mine there are issues, and I hate
ribbons.

Most everything else I can get used to.

2. Desire to make money

cannot afford
4. Public relations value

It is no surprise that Windows, the world's most widely used computing
platform, has more than its share of screen readers because all of the
above have been at play with the various players in the field at one
point or another. I leave it to you, the reader, to decide which were
bigger factors for each product.

Factor #1 is utterly lacking on iOS and Android. Whether one likes
VoiceOver or TalkBack, both are fully mature products that do their
job admirably. There can almost certainly be nothing as far as
factors numbers one through three are concerned in these environments,
and given the degree of maturity and broad acceptance of what is
already available, factor number four has almost zero impact. Who's
going to hail "the next VoiceOver/TalkBack"? Not many, that's for
darned sure.

There are limited resources for implementing accessibility software,
both monetary and otherwise. It makes absolutely no sense to try to
open a market that's not really a market in the first place. Choices
have to be made, and the probability of an entity that has the history
of NVAccess doing a radical gear shift to other platforms makes very
little sense from virtually any angle.

My dear departed Aunt Lila used to quote a rather salty old relative
of hers when people brought up wishes such as this, that have all the
odds stacked against them, and for good reason, "Wish in one hand,
s*^t in the other, and see which gets full first." That sums up my
thoughts about the feasibility and likelihood of NVDA leaping across
computing ecosystems.

Hi !

In answer to your question, Ron, the only time I get a Dropbox window I never used to get is just before my computer finishes booting, and it disappears in less than a minute, not coming back till the computer boots again. I don’t know whether it makes a difference that I’m on Windows 7, but I have never noticed any strange Dropbox windows appearing after my computer has finished booting. I am using Dropbox 68.4.102, which I assume is the latest version, as my Dropbox automatically updates on its own.

Bye for now!

While this Drop Box issue is an annoyance, it goes away within a few minutes after system boot on my computer.  Are others having the phantom windows stay visible indefinitely?

Hi to every one,

After more than 2 months it is back in operative :)

Changes in this new version:

• Weather Plus now uses the APIXU API, in my opinion better than the previous one; To work requires an API key, read the Weather Plus First Settings.html for instructions (highly recommended).
#Changes in the Weather Plus Settings window:
• Removed old checkbox "State of barometric pressure".
• Replaced with new checkbox "Add cloudiness value"; It gives you the percentage of cloudiness.
• Added new checkbox "Add precipitation value"; It gives you the amount in millimeters or inches of precipitation.
• Removed old checkbox "Indicates the wait with a beep while you search for the latest bulletin"; Left active by default.
• Added to the Astronomic informations;
Time of moonrise and moonset.
• Added new button "Rename";
To rename cities more conveniently.
• Improved function of the "Test" button; Now accept some commands to facilitate the search for cities; These new commands are described in the help function that can be called up with F1.
• Added button to manage your API key.

Weather Plus can update itself, however you can download it directly from:

http://www.nvda.it/files/plugin/weather_plus5.0.nvda-addon

or from the pages:

http://www.nvda.it/weather-plus#main-content

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/weatherPlus.en.html

If the file extension arrives as .zip, please correct it with .nvda-addon.

Cheers

Richard Bartholomew

Firstly, my apologies if I’m going over old ground but I missed the start of this thread and, therefore, don’t know the configuration under which this happens!

I’m using Dropbox V68.4.102 under Windows 10, 1809 and have it running constantly from bootup to shutdown and have never seen this window, thankfully.  Under Dropbox Preferences and in the notification tab, I have everything unchecked as I don’t want to be pestered with file update notifications since I share folders with a large number of people and constantly hearing them, for me, is very irritating…besides which, if you’re away from the PC, you miss them anyway so why not miss them all?  Is it having these checkboxes set which is causing the problem?

I do find NVDA very sluggish in the Dropbox Systray area compared to other screenreaders but, other than this and their awful website, I seem to be fortunate in having no problems with it and neither do those with whom I share folders!

By the way, the most common cause is when you have a large message, such as one with an attachment coming in.

Yes Outlook Express and Outlook both used to put up strange messages if a folder or message did not seem to be correct. I guess the error checking or the time outs tend to confuse the routines used by the imap collection system in email software.

Yes this seems to be a shortcoming of the synths themselves to my way of thinking and as such really out of the control of nvda. Everyone seems to make their synths work slightly differently and I guess unless somebody has solved this and has the right text files to make them sound right, you have to do it the hard way.

Hello Lev

I have just recently emailed the list to find out about this same topic. You can go to the nvda menu, then preferences, punctuation/symbol pronunciation. You'll need to input the symbols along with how you want the speech engine to pronounce them. However, I don't think putting in the unicode values is going to work. You'll need to input the actual symbol along with how you want NVDA to pronounce it. I've just tried entering a unicode value here and it didn't work for me. But when I enter the actual symbol, it does.

You can find information about punctuation/symbol pronunciation in section 11.2.2 of the online userguide. It will explain about inputting symbols.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

I have noticed that espeak reads some symbols of the international phonetic alphabet; however, this can not be done by other synthetic voices, so my question is this:

How to make that nvda reads correctly those symbols regardless of the synthetizer?

Or, how to make that other synthetizers read those symbols? For instance, vocalizer.

I got the Unicode transcription for all the symbols that I want.

The syntaxis is this:

U+00E6=Ash

Where the term “ash” is the proper name for that particular symbol.

So, is there a file inside the installation folder of nvda or user settings where I can paste that syntaxis to have nvda reading all those symbols?

Thanks for any info.

Well, Although I do get warnings of deprecated parts of the add on there are no show stoppers as far as I can see. In your case it seems that the loop you are in is just that, a loop and nothing will stop it except a complete change of app, like your log debug screen or a reboot.

I think that all you can try is to make sure you have the latest nvda. I think there is a .1.1 version but if that makes any difference, I'm not sure. In my case I'm running the latest beta of 2019.1 and would hear an error if one occurred but I hear none.
