Re: Fn Key Issues

Dear all,

My sincerest apologies for my own delayed response to all your prompt
suggestions.

• I am not entirely sure of the exact model of my keyboard. However,
broadly, it should be a Lapcare Alfa USB Wired Keyboard. I shall hunt
for the keyboard’s manual tomorrow or seek sighted assistance in
obtaining the same information from the keyboard itself. Once I have
that, I will revert sharing the particulars of the make and model of
my USB keyboard.
• I, too, suspect that changing the Bios of my laptop will not have
any effect on my problem with an external device.
• I doubt Sharp Keys or other key remapping software will be of use
because my issue is not with the positioning of keys or needing to
press Fn+F12 to emulate the F12 key or anything along those lines.
Rather, my issue lies with the order in which this external keyboard
demands of me to press keys in a multi-key combination - always
needing to hold down Fn first and then the rest of the keystroke (for
all key combinations involving the Fn key).
• Pressing Fn+Esc has not resolved my problem either.

I don’t see any solution in sight at the present instant, except for
the possibility that I discover some secret on getting details about
my device and subsequently reading its manual. Thus, I have been
trying my best to adjust with this new sequence of pressing keys and
issuing keyboard shortcuts. While I still sometimes end up not
pressing the Fn key first thus issuing a key command other than what I
desired to issue, I am able to somewhat cope with this new system. A
remedy to this oddity would still be immensely useful though.

Thanks.

Subject: [nvda] Fn Key Issues

Dear all,

I apologize for this not being strictly NVDA related, but more in regards to

adapting to a keyboard which poses unique challenges in the issuance of NVDA

key commands. I recently purchased an external keyboard which was overall
great value for money, apart from one pestiferous problem.

To emulate the Home, End, Page Up and Page Down functions, I need to press
the Function (Fn) key in conjunction with the arrow keys. This is not
atypical for me as I need to do this even on my built in laptop keyboard.
However, on my laptop, I am absolutely used to pressing Ctrl followed by
Function followed by right arrow for Ctrl+Home, whereas on this new external

keyboard, I need to hold down Function first, and then press keys like Ctrl

and right arrow. This is getting particularly problematic since my brain is

wired to use the Function key preceding an arrow key only when I want to
select an entire line or page as opposed to holding down Function first and

foremost, and then pressing things like NVDA modifier+Shift+right arrow to
read the status bar.

Is there any way - software settting or device setup or otherwise - by which

I can get this external keyboard to act similar to my laptop keyboard, in
that I need to press the Function key only before the arrow keys or the key

whose secondary function will be induced as opposed to the first key in any

multi-key combinaition?

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in this regard.

Thanks.

Hi Anthony
I don't know of a way to do this via the windows update route but you can upgrade Windows via other methods. For instance you could use the Windows Media Creation tool to create installation media and do a clean install. This will also get rid of bloatware which is on your system and free up some disk space.

Have a look at this article which looks at various methods of updating Windows:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/overcoming-windows-10-upgrade-and-version-update/682df9cf-aecf-4d52-8df7-19e9f8dba4cc#Main

So far I have not allowed this update, has anyone else had this experience,

Hi Jim

I am not experiencing any significant issues.  NVDA reads out some extraneous text items when I access the Settings App, for which I posted a message on the NVDA list.  Apparently the text items are something to do with Active Directory parameters and do not affect everyone who moves to 1809.  They are a bit annoying but don’t affect the use of the settings app in any way and there is probably a way to get rid of them but they’re too insignificant to bother about really.

Hello all. I'm trying to sync my iPod shuffle, and I'm running into a
little problem. I want to sync particular albums. I can choose artists
from my library just fine, but it syncs their entire collection I have
in my library, including Christmas albums, which I don't want on my
iPod in March! But when I go to the list of albums and try to select
the ones I want, I get nothing. NVDA says absolutely nothing. I've
tried this with a demo version of JAWS 2019 and got the same result:
absolutely nothing. The only other list where this happens is genres.
The lists of artists and playlists read fine. This makes me think
something needs to be configured in my iTunes. The only other way I
can think to do this would be to create a new playlist, add all the
albums to it and just sync the one playlist. That might work, since
the playlists are being read. By the way, I am running the latest
version of iTunes, on the latest Windows 10. Can anyone help with
this?

But can you read a whole document yet? Certainly Libra seems not to have that capacity with nvda due to the problem of nvda not knowing the difference between a blank line and the end of the file.

I haven't tried the add-on yet, although I doubt it will help in any way
since perhaps it's not updated according to the latest Firefox.
Of course they might not have time to catch up with the updates as soon
as they're released, so it's understandable.
Anyway, as I've said, miss my old Firefox!

P.S.: Should I stop posting to this thread or since somehow it's about
NVDA that's ok to keep it up?

Cheers,

Hello. I am getting the same thing and I also noticed it was
occurring in the previous version so whats going on here? I even
cleared out the cookies and cash along with the history entries and am
still getting this. I guess for now I have to use the tab and shift
tab to get around this annoying bug. I am also getting the same thing
on my other windows 10 machine. Maybe the NVDA add on for Thunderbird
and fire fox needs to be updated? I just don't know. Maybe when the
new version of nvda comes out those issues will go away. Just my
thoughts.

WE are talking Firefox add ons dialogue here I think, if you reead the thread, and I've tried the latest Firefox on several flavours of nvda and the all show, or in effect do not show the bit that is complained about. Hang on a moment....

Heare is more info. Firstly when you land on it you do momentarily hear a description but hitting a curso then says unknown and you cannot get the text back and an nvda/f1 looks like this.

Not knowing what add-ons someone has, or what vintage they may be, I would definitely encourage anyone using NVDA with add-ons to get the Add-On Updater ( https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/addonUpdater.en.html ) add-on, which is getting more and more comprehensive about the add-ons it can keep updated.
