Re: Excerp from the portable NVDA log.

On my personal laptop I am using and installed Copy, but I tried with a portable copy and everything worked fine as well.
On my college computer I think it is running windows 10 version 1803 whereas my laptop  run windows 10 version 1809 . I think The desktop computer at my college that I normally use  runs a slightly older build of office 2016 compared to the one installed on my laptop.
In terms of NVDA addons, if I remember correctly on my portable Copy I only use Mozilla abs enHancement and windows 10 App essentials.
If you want to try and reproduce the problem, you can go to Excel options, go to the add ins category, and then click on the go button under manage add ins. From there, a window will show up, simply check the solver add in and then click OK. Once Enabled, solver can be found under the data tab of the ribbon. Once you invoked solver, try clicking on the options button, and see if NVDA announces  the various controls inside the options window.

Since I don't have the add-on, I can't test it, but a couple of things to check or answer please:

- You mention you are using a portable version of NVDA at school where it doesn't work, but it does work on your personal laptop.  Are you using an installed or portable version on your laptop?

- Which version / build of Windows are you using on each machine?
- And whch version / build of Office?

Are you using any add-ons on one machine, or anything else which is different between the computers?

Hi all,
As I mentioned in my earlier thread some days or weeks ago that in some dialog boxes like some Solver windows, NVDA was not reading the controls.
Today during class I managed to save the log from the portable copy of NVDA, version 2019.1 that I used. Below is the excerp.
For those of you who don't know, Solver is basically a built-in Excel add in that allows you to solve linear programming problems in Excel.

Any idea why this is happening? On my laptop NVDA worked fine with the Solver add in for Excel.

Re: Question about reading an entire line with NVDA

Quentin Christensen

Gene,

I thought I'd pick up on your comments in a separate message.  CONTROL+DOWN ARROW is a function provided by the application (actually I said Windows in my last message, but it should be application - as demonstrated by the fact that this functionality is NOT in notepad).  There is an open issue on our tracker for this functionality to be provided by NVDA for Notepad: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7052

As I just commented on that issue, the best outcome would actually be for Microsoft to add the functionality to Notepad, rather than for NVDA to provide it.  Therefore, I would encourage anyone interested, to also request Microsoft add the functionality to Notepad.

Regards

Quentin.

My question to Marcio is to ask what program / kind of file are you reading where you are having trouble reading by line to begin with?  Pressing NVDA+up arrow (or in laptop layout, NVDA+l) should read the current line.  On web pages, it's harder to find out exactly what text is visually on one line, so NVDA sets the maximum line length, and if a block of text is longer than that, it assumes each N characters is a new "line".  You can find the option in NVDA's browse mode settings - NVDA+control+b will get you there directly.

There is also an option in Browse mode settings "Use screen layout (when supported)".  I've just copied from the user guide here:

"Use screen layout
Key: NVDA+v

This option allows you to specify whether content in browse mode should place content such as links and other fields on their own line, or if it should keep them in the flow of text as it is visually shown. If the option is enabled then things will stay as they are visually shown, but if it is disabled then fields will be placed on their own line."

Hey guys, I'm here again :)
This time the question is about... well you saw it on the subject I suppose :)
So, the thing is: I found out that pressing CTRL along with the down arrow, NVDA will read the entire line from a text, regardless if that line is broken for some reason.
However, while I just found it out, I also found out that apparently, this  option isn't described on the NVDA's keystrokes refference.
So my question: is it actually something expected, that pressing CTRL+down arrow NVDA will read the entire line? If so, why isn't it described as an option?
Or, well, what would I be missing? Can anyone point me on the right direction? :)

Hi Zahra,

I just had a look and found this site: http://www.blockediniran.com/ which claims to test whether any given site is blocked in Iran.

Putting https://www.nvaccess.org/ in its checker, it advised that www.nvaccess.org IS blocked in Iran.

I know our site is based on Word Press and that also appears to be blocked, so that is possibly the reason?

Interestingly that tool also says Dropbox is blocked so I'll be interested to hear whether you can download the file Ralf uploaded for you.

Quentin.

I may disobey God
by depriving an ant

I would not do it.

Hi folks.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I don't want to use Itunes for podcast.

Re: Sending Logs

Quentin Christensen

Hi Abbie,

It looks like that is the log from after you restarted NVDA?  At least, it appears to only show the standard startup entries.  In the %temp% folder, there should be an "nvda-old.log" file which is the log file from the previous time NVDA was run.   See https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/LogFilesAndCrashDumps for more information.

Re the file being in use, it sounds like Word might have crashed and when you went to open the file again, Word didn't realise it wasn't still open from previously.  This is likely because the temporary file that Word created while it was open are still present.  If you open Word to a blank document, it will often present the recovery pane to show you all the versions of documents it knows about which were open it crashed.  Recover / save any you want to keep then discard any others and you should be able to open those documents again.

Because of all that, it sounds like the problem may be with Word, moreso than NVDA.  There was an issue a year or so ago with a particular build of Office and NVDA that caused crashes from memory, but I'd need to go back and check.  It was certainly before NVDA 2018.4.1 which you were using when you made that log, but which version of Ofice are you using?

The other thing to try, if you can reliably recreate the issue (eg every time you open that document, or perform some other action).  If you could do it without NVDA running (even with Narrator running etc), and find out whether the freeze in Word still happens that would narrow down whether it is related to NVDA at all.

Particularly if you think it is an issue with Office, there is a "repair" feature in Office you can try.  I'm using Office 365 on Windows 10, so it may be different in other versions, but if you open the start menu and type "add or remove programs" and go into that, you can then select "Microsoft Office" and choose "Modify".  It gives you the option to quick repair office or online repair.  It notes that quick repair fixes most things without needing to go online, where Online repair fixes all things (that's a big claim) but takes longer and you should try that if quick repair didn't fix your issue.

Regards

Quentin.

Re: Excerp from the portable NVDA log.

Quentin Christensen

Since I don't have the add-on, I can't test it, but a couple of things to check or answer please:

- You mention you are using a portable version of NVDA at school where it doesn't work, but it does work on your personal laptop.  Are you using an installed or portable version on your laptop?

- Which version / build of Windows are you using on each machine?
- And whch version / build of Office?

Are you using any add-ons on one machine, or anything else which is different between the computers?

Regards

Quentin.

Any idea why this is happening? On my laptop NVDA worked fine with the Solver add in for Excel.

Re: 2019.1 appears to be out

I know we get a couple of comments each release about this.  The check for updates is supposed to check the first time you run NVDA each day.  Given that we only release each quarter, there's no point checking more often than that.  So, if you follow NV Access on social media, or see my posts (or others when I'm slow off the mark), you may well find out about the new version before your copy notices it.

I occasionally get people who say their copy doesn't see the update even a few days after a new version is released.  I don't really have an answer for that and have never tracked down why that might be.

Strange Behavior with Microsoft UI Automation

Abbie Taylor <abbietaylor945@...>

I just downloaded the latest version of NVDA and checked the box to enable Microsoft UI Automation in the advanced settings. Since then, I’ve noticed that in Outlook, that links in email messages don’t appear as such and are not clickable. I know this because I subscribe to some  blogs, and the notification email messages I receive contain links to the posts and other related links. When I unchecked the box, the links appeared as they normally would. Is this the way Microsoft UI Automation is supposed to work, for some reason?

Re: Kindle for PC

Hi Don

Below is from the user manual and the tutorial i am putting together.

Hope it gives you a better idea.

it sounds like if it does not say it will default to the TTS in kindle if you use it but if it is marked as in the user manual  below then nvda can be used to read the book.

The other section is found  in the NVDA user manual called 10.8. Kindle for PC

NVDA supports reading and navigating books in Amazon Kindle for PC. This functionality is only available in Kindle books designated with "Screen Reader: Supported" which you can check on the details page for the book.
Browse mode is used to read books. It is enabled automatically when you open a book or focus the book area. The page will be turned automatically as appropriate when you move the cursor or use the say all command. You can manually turn to the next page with the pageDown key and turn to the previous page with the pageUp key.
Single letter navigation is supported for links and graphics, but only within the current page. Navigating by link also includes footnotes.
NVDA provides early support for reading and interactive navigation of mathematical content for books with accessible math. Please see the Reading Mathematical Content section for further information.

Re: checkboxes in word forms

Just a bit of information for the cohort after having had a chance to look at the form in question.

As is all too typical, this thing isn't an MS-Word fillable form that is designed with accessibility in mind, and it's not even designed with ease of use for the sighted in mind, as interacting with the checkboxes requires that you open the checkbox properties dialog to change its state.  It was clearly designed as something that was meant to be printable for filling out via pencil/pen and paper.

Although MS-Word has supported the creation of document templates that allow you to generate both perfect forms in print for pencil/pen and paper use, or to be filled out electronically, virtually no one seems to know how to create them, and even fewer know how to create them with with the help text on the various form fields such that a screen reader will pick it up and announce it.

Re: Single key navigation in Google Chrome

it's almost certainly nothing to do with browse mode being off.  Even if you turn off browse mode and then move to another page, using a bookmark, from history, by typing an address in the address bar, etc. you will automatically be placed back in browse mode.

The first questions are, can you read a web page in other ways, such as by moving with the arrow keys and by using commands such as read to end.

Are the quick navigation keys the only navigation method that doesn't work?
The answers to those questions are the first things we need to know.

Hi

make sure you are in browse mode you can use the nvda key + space bar to do this. Depending how you have it set you will either either hear like a key been typed this means you are in focus mode where you can type like in a form. If it makes a higher sound maybe like a ball been bounced it will be in browse mode.

if you want to hear it spoken that is how i have mine press the nvda key + ctrl key + the letter B. When the settings come up for that section tab down until you hear the following Audio indication of focus and browse modes and uncheck the box then apply and ok it Then from on you will hear it spoken as say in the browser or if you have microsoft word when you change modes.

hope it helps.

Hi Brian

The language pack for Windows does the language but does not have a text to speech voice. I just checked for that.

he did also mention that the HAL screen reader had a synth in it for there language but not sure from how long ago it was and if it was a hardware synth/voice or a software synth/voice. he is going to do some digging to see if he can track it down and or if it can be used if still around and not copyrighted unless it is by Hal.

I also said if it used sapi 4 or 5 voices etc and could be installed into windows it would be able to be used by other screen readers as well depending how they go about it.

He will either look into funding as well say either for a synth to be made for there language or translating the interface into there language. Or he might do the translating him self as he writes and speakes it as well.

it might be some thing the government might fund so it can be done? We will see what happens.

The other thing i did as well  is pointed him towards the e speak website and gave him directions etc of if he wants to have a go at making a e speak voice for there language and how to test it etc. I also pointed him towards the tweaky voice that he could print out or have it read and as you know it points towards the website i am guessing the project is still running as i see updates in nvda for it.

It has given him some food for thought to get started and see where it goes.

Yes it is for New Zealand and is a official language next to english here hince Gene nz been for the country.

I think as has been said, it might not be worth it if no synth supports it. I'm guessing this is New Zealand then or one of the small  island clusters in that area?

Does Windows support it?

Hi

I would have to ask him. I know there used to be a synth for there language maybe he would know. Is it better for him to have a synth for there language instead of translating the user manual etc into there language? It is new to me and probably him as well.

Even the steps he would have to take.

I did find the wicki page on translating and sent that back to him while i find out more information from both sides.

They might even be able to get funding to cover translating nvda and or the synth. I will know more when he gets back to me.

I know there are translators on this list and i have been asked about having a Te Reo Māori option  in NVDA.

I only speak English but i have been contacted by a person who speaks the above language  and can translate it into there language.

I am wondering how much is involved? I am guessing the whole user manual would have to be translated along with maybe quick reference and whats new?

What program would they have to use? Is there a easy way to do it? How would i start and also we would be new to try and do this for NVDA.

The above language is recognized in our country along side of english and sign language.

We are not programmers so it would be a matter of starting from scratch doing this.

I just hope it does not scare us off translating it into there language.

I am wondering also  if it was just the user manual etc or the synth? as well. They might be able to get funding to do this?

any help would be great.

Re: column/row headers not reading in Excel 2013

Jenine,

I am using NVDA 2019.1 in Windows 10 with Office 2016. The column reading command is working perfectly here as you describe it doing for you originally.

Is it echoing any column heading at all? Have you any blank column breaking the flow of column headings? These things can prevent the full header row being echoed.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Jenine,

I hope that the following may help, as it should apply to NVDA as well as JAWS (thought I wrote it for a student who was using JAWS).  I have generally found it easier to set the title row/column in the Excel spreadsheet itself, then setting the screen reader to read those as I move up/down/left right (if that's wanted).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Assigning a Title Row (Column Titles) and/or Title Column (Row Titles) in Excel

You can assign column and row titles in Excel. These are nice because they always work with Excel and are saved to the workbook. There's no risk of losing a setting in your screen reader.

To add column and row title names:

    1. Focus on the first cell in the row or column or at the first cell where the title row and title column intersect
    2. Open the Name dialog:

                                                               i.      Open the Formula ribbon (ALT-M)

ii.      Activate the “Define Name” command (M)

iii.      Within the drop-down list, activate “Define Name”

iv.      The “New Name” dialog opens

Focus is placed in the name field. Within the name field, you can name the focused cell or selected range of cells. In this case, we’re naming the column or row title:

    1. Name the cell using the following rules

                           i.  Start the range name with the label that tells Excel you’re creating a title range

        1. Title – This tells Excel the column and row that intersect at the active cell are a title row and column
        2. ColumnTitle – This tells Excel the focused column contains the titles for the rows within the range
        3. RowTitle – this tells Excel the focused row contains titles for the columns in the range

ii.      Add a name for the range

        1. Title_WidgetSales
        2. ColumnTitle_WidgetSales
        3. RowTitle_WidgetSales

iii.      Optional - Add the last cell in the range preceded by two periods

        1. Use this when you have multiple regions in a worksheet
        2. Title_WidgetSales..J25
        3. ColumTitle_WidgetSales..h32
        4. RowTitle_WidgetSales..r12
        5. Remember the cell address referenced is the last cell in the range for which you are creating titles

The next field in the dialog sets the scope for the name. this is a combo box. Use UP and DOWN ARROW to choose from between:

  • Workbook - the title Is unique and can’t be used elsewhere in a workbook
  • A Specific Worksheet - the name can be used elsewhere in a workbook

You can add a comment for the named cell or region, this is strictly for your personal reference and doesn’t affect the echo of the column or row title name

The last field references the cell name or range of selected cells you’re naming. You can leave this field alone.

Activate the OK button to save the name and close the dialog.

Save the workbook and the titles are permanently saved and will work on any computer.

If you have titles set to echo in JAWS, the titles will echo and you won’t lose the settings.
