nvda and chrome

Hi not had this happen but aparently a few people on another list well the foundation one in new zealand are having issues with nvda and the 80 series of versions of chrome, its not updating itself when the page updates itself or something like that.

Just wandered if people were aware of this.

I don't use chrome that extensively but still.

Re: The period key not speaking

Hi Quentin,

I tried both of your suggestions, but no luck.
I must have done something wrong, because I lost voice and could not
NVDA. So using JAWS I uninstalled and reinstalled NVDA. Then I went to
voice dictionary and typed "pattern" and the voice returned.. There is
no a list ov entries in the voice dictionary.
Both the key for period and the word period are still silent. If I
move on the word with the right arrow key the letters p e r i o d are
spoken.

On 2/17/20, Quentin Christensen <quentin@...> wrote:
When you say NVDA does not read the word "period", do you mean at all? As
in if I wrote in fifth period I have math, it would read "in fifth I have
math"?

If that is the case, it sounds like you have a dictionary entry to replace
the word period with nothing. In that case, press NVDA+N, then P then D
then ENTER (we'll start with the default dictionary - if this doesn't work,
try the same thing but instead of pressing ENTER here, down arrow once to
"Voice dictionary" just in case). Arrow through the options and see what
you have. If you have any you aren't sure of, press ALT+R to remove them
(or ALT+E to edit them and fix them).

Additionally NVDA does not read the word 'period'.
What could be the problem? Any ideas?

hi ralf
thank you that you've confirmed this issue. it's great to know there's someone else who saw the problem. i use java 8u241. and i don't knew before that there are more than one version of java access bridge and in the ease of access center in windows 10 it is activated. the strange is, narrator recognices it better but not corectly either.

cheers too, but only with coke and water. :-)

Hello All:

Does the JAVA runtime environment (x86/x64) need to be install separately in order to work with NVDA/JAVA application?

There needs to be some clarification as far as NVDA having JAVA/JRE built-in or if NVDA just automatically loading the JAVA/JRE which is/has been pre-installed on a users on the PC either as OEM/user installed.

If JAVA/JRE needs to be installed separately it needs to be specified to NVDA users instead of just saying that NVDA will load JAVA/JRE automatically!

This might lead to some confusion with some NVDA users!

I hope that NVDA developers or Joseph Lee will read this message and will provide some clarity in this matter.

Thank You! to all who read/respond to this message!

Hi Heike,

I can confirm 2 issues:

  1. With 2019.3.1 and latest Java installed this program reads nothing
  2. When installing Java Access Bridge manually it reads somewhat, but not to a degree it used to be accessible before.

I used this program many years ago and it was very accessible with Java Acces Bridge installed but the newest version seems to be broken for screen readers.

But I still can see the problem that 2019.3.1 doesn’t come with an automatic install of Java Access Bridge, or I missed the procedure to install it.

Cheers,

  Ralf

MP3 Direct Cut Chattering too Much with NVDA Add-On

Rich DeSteno

The answer to the mystery of why I have been getting constant chatter of the time in MP3 Direct Cut is that I was using the most recent version of DC,version 2.28.  Thanks to Brian's suggestion, I examined the add-ons details with the insert-h key combination. The author clearly states that the add-on was only tested up to version 2.23 of DC.  I downloaded version 2.23 and installed it over 2.28 and the chatter is now gone!  So if you want to use the NVDA Direct Cut add-on, I recommend using a version of DC no later than 2.23.

Re: web page objects that require the use of the mouse

David Moore

Have you used the NVDA add-on called Golden cursor!

That add-on adds much more support for using the mouse, and allows you to use the arrow keys to move the mouse around the screen, and tells you where the mouse pointer is on the screen!

Golden cursor is needed if you are really going to use the mouse!

Ok, I finally got back to this.  I tried all the suggestions given and it still didn't work.  I couldn't believe it was my system causing the problem so I decided to take a look in settings and make sure.

I made some changes that looked like they might affect the mouse tracking and other things and now it is working correctly.  In fact, I don't

even have to take any direct actions, when I move the focus to that line on the page it automatically reports the email address of the contact.

I really should have made one change at a time and tested each but I didn't so I don't even now for certain which changes fixed the situation.  Shame on me. ;)

Thanks to all who provided some assistance.

I appreciate all the suggestions.  However, how does  one do this using a laptop?  Your keystroke suggestions are for a desktop layout not a laptop.

I have searched through the NVDA help and can find nothing about moving the screen cursor or system cursor to the currently focused object.

Maybe this can't be done on a laptop?

Subject: [nvda] OE Classic fixes list accessibility.

Glad to see they responded to feedback! Lists have been fixed in the version 3.1. This version isn't available for free users yet. My guess is, that when OE Classic 3.2 comes into beta, then free users will get 3.1. See below for links and emails.

This is an email client that's supposed to be a modern imitation of Outlook Express.. Profiles and IMAP is not supported in the free version yet.

The announcement email.

At last, we can announce a huge improvement for OE Classic accessibility.

Previously, OE Classic lists were unreadable by Jaws and NVDA (or other screen readers).

This is no longer the case!

Now, we've finally cracked the code required to properly announce and narrate those lists to a screen reader. This includes - message list (list of messages), contact list and the list of folders. We went through all the windows and it appears, that this affects all the windows which were previously blank to a screen reader. In addition to that, the names of the lists should now also be properly narrated (such as message list, tree view, followed by a list of actual messages).

Also, when keys are used to navigate (for example, arrow up/down) each individual item is narrated separately (which could be a folder name, a contact name or a subject line of a selected message) which is consistent with the standard message list.

This is a huge improvement for accessibility in OE Classic. Combined with the earlier improvement we did - message boxes, this will make OE Classic a whole lot more accessible. Even though there is still room for improvement which of course we'll continue to work upon, we believe that this one will make a significant difference for OE Classic users in their daily usage.

The new feature is available in OE Classic 3.1, today's update (2020, February 17th) so if you're using an older version, please update to use this feature.

Best regards, Zvonko Tesic
