Re: Welcoming you to my talk at NVDACon

How can I join the presentation and when is it being on?
From: nvda@nvda.groups.io <nvda@nvda.groups.io> On Behalf Of Deborah Armstrong
I wanted to let everyone know how excited I am to present again at NVDACon and to tell you a bit about my talk.
I've asked the organizers to give me a full 90 minutes so there will be plenty of time for questions. My talk last year got cut off due to the previous presenter being late and their need to stay on schedule.
I also want to welcome beginners. So many of the NVDACon talks are aimed at more advanced users with eclectic interests. My goal is to be inclusive and insure no matter your skill level with NVDA and Windows, you will gain some knowledge from my presentation.
I'll be speaking about using NVDA to learn foreign languages. I'll talk about getting different language voices for Windows, setting up your keyboard to type foreign characters, using add-ons to make language switching easier and marking up documents to insure they read in the appropriate language. Most language learning today involves use of a computer, and if you are a screen reader user, the process can be quite frustrating if you haven't mastered these tricks!
I also wish to welcome users who already work with multiple languages to chime in with their additions and corrections! As an American, I'm immersed in a culture that isn't truly interested in being bi-lingual or tri-lingual. In my own small way, I'm trying to change this, but I don't have other blind users to call on for advice, so I'm depending on you folks in the international community to become part of my presentation.
I'll ask people to mute when I'm talking, but I'm going to be sure there's plenty of time for feedback so we can all learn from each other.
I've sent a handout and an expanded description of my talk to the organizers, so I'm hoping they post it soon.

Which program are you using? is the person also using a lap top? or a desk top. insert and down arrow key for desk top and nvda key + A for a lap top if I remember right. To check which layout keyboard you are using use the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter K it will be the first option that tells you what you are using.

Mary,
What you're doing should work, provided that link is still actually a link. If you would not mind forwarding a copy of this message to me, britechguy at that big email factory owned by Google dot com, after you receive it I can at least take a look at what it is that is landing in your inbox. accessing the links in groups.io messages with NVDA
Mary Otten
I saw a message in this group to which I wanted to reply, but only to the sender, not to the list. Ther is a link after the message body that is suppose to let you do that. But I can't make this link activate. I've tried the standard keyboard method of the return key when the link had focus. I've tried routing mouse to focus and then doing a simulated double left click with the numpad NVDA desktop layout. No luck. I've tried numpad insert plus numpad enter to "activate" the link. No luck. What am I missing?

Because Narrator replaces the driver for his own driver. Do the following: Press ctrl-win-n for narrator settings. Not necessary to have Narator running. Press shift-tab a 17 times. You will land on a option to choose the brailledisplay driver and press space to open this menu. Choose the right driver with arrows and enter. Regards, Marten

Hi Bob I can’t comment on the Outlook issues but regarding the Gmail basic HTML view, when you are browsing the list of messages, you are in a table, so use the table reading commands rather than just tabbing. These are Control+alt+left/right/up/down arrows, so, for example you can move up and down the subject column to read them. Personally, I hate the gmail interface and have linked my gmail account to the W10 mail app and find it much easier to manage.
Cheers Chris

Hello. I also have a problem with emails. When I am in my Gmail I am using standard view and I notice that it dosn't read all the messages. When I go down the list of messages, sometimes, it says "section" or "grouping" or it doesn't say anything. I need suggestions
as to what to do. Do I use HTML view instead? Please let me know. Thank you. Lauren

I think you have said it. I found, using the Braille Sense, that if I used Narrator to read braille I could no longer use the Braille Sense with NVDA. I hope someone on here can tell you how to get out of this hole, because I don't know the answer. pele West

Re: two different problems with NVDA and reading email

Hello Bob. Perhaps this is something that needs to be addressed in a future update of NVDA? This is concerning that NVDA won't automatically read the message after hitting control and the letter D, but System Access will, especially since System Access from what I hear is soon going to be a dead product and from what I hear hasn't received any updates since August of 2020. Note. I've had some familiarity with System Access in the past and owned their accessibility anywhere package and when SA to go came out I was hoping that SA To go would take off and become successful.

However, I'm having two problems: 1. In Outlook, the reporting of deleted messages is inconsistent. If deleting from a folder, NVDA doesn't, and has never, said anything. I'd like the subject line of the next message to be spoken after the previous message is moved to the deleted items folder. When in the deleted items folder, NVDA does not reliably say the correct subject line. To reproduce, follow these steps: A. Locate an email you don't want in Outlook, open it, then press control+D to delete it. Notice that NVDA does not say anything, I'd like it to say the subject of the next message, or the name of the folder if there are no more messages to display or you have Outlook configured to return you to the folder where you were. B. Now go to your deleted items folder, and find a few messages you want to delete. For this scenario, I'm assuming you, like me, have Outlook set to open the previous item upon taking action on the currently focused one. Open one of the messages, and press control+D to delete it. Outlook pops up a message saying that this will be permanent, and asks if you would like to continue. Say yes to this, and you should be in the next message. Here, NVDA sometimes says the correct subject, sometimes does not say the subject of the message at all, or sometimes even says the subject of the message you just deleted. 2. I don't use Outlook for the account I'm writing you on right now, I use Gmail's web interface with the basic html mode. When navigating through my messages using the tab key, NVDA does not read who the message is from. It will say something like row 4 column 1 checkbox not checked, then I tab and it will say column 3 message subject. System Access will read the sender's name with the checkbox in column 1. Bob
