Why is NVDA reading PDF text without tags / reading order?

markusf64@...

As part of some work to make a PDF accessible, I removed an element from the tag structure and reading order. Acrobat Read Out Loud ignored the element as anticipated, but NVDA read it. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas how I can solve it?

thanks, it worked. I sorted by item type and now the icons are back how they should be.

Bias FX 2 software

Quentin Christensen

Hi everyone,

I've had an inquiry from someone about "Bias FX 2", which I gather is musical (guitar) software.  Has anyone used this and got any recommendations for it please?

I think this is the software:  https://www.positivegrid.com/bias-fx/

(Normally, my first reaction in this instance would be to suggest they contact the developer, and also ask here, but they did not speak English so I thought I would help).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Survey about inaccessible Content on Web Pages for Firefox dev tools

Hi all,

It's been quite some time since I've posted here. Since I joined Mozilla, I've been watching NVDA from the sidelines, helping out where I can and contributing the odd NVDA patch here and there. Today, I have a small request to make on behalf of Mozilla accessibility.

Many web sites are inaccessible because they use custom page elements that lack the accessibility of browser-native ones. You have almost certainly run across this in your surfing: a page that uses divs and JavaScript to create a checkbox which NVDA doesn't recognise, for example. Mozilla wants to improve this by identifying these inaccessible elements in the Firefox developer tools and helping web authors use standard ones—or helping them add the right ARIA roles to make their custom elements accessible.

But identifying inaccessible custom elements is a challenge. The approach we're investigating is to use machine learning, which requires many examples. We would greatly appreciate your help in finding them, by filling out this survey:

Thanks!

Jamie

Re: how to remove avast from windows defender with nvda

Annamaria

Hi,

I used the avast tool with nvda and the pc restarts in safe mode, but the synthesis of nvda and windows allow you to do it.

This is the only system.

The tool helps you step by step to do the job.

Then it will notify you of the folders or files that you will have to manually delete on the next PC restart.

Ciao.

Re: icons on desktop got messed up

Hi Josh,

Try doing the following.

1.  Move to the desktop and make sure nothing is selected by pressing control + space bar.
2.  Press the windows context key or shift + F10 to bring up the context menu.
3.  This is what I have:
A.  Under the view menu, I have small icons and desktop icons checked.
B.  Under the sort by menu, I have nothing checked.  This seems a bit strange to me, but if that doesn't work, then try checking 'by date.'  This should put the oldest icons first--at or near the top of the listing.

I was referring to the message below yours, which I should have specified.  While I don't know why the command was used either, and I didn't mean to imply that it is for the reason I gave, that is a good result of using that command, its always consistent and I see no reason to assume the other reason.

It is a bad idea to assume motivations or reasoning with no evidence. And the reason you assume makes no logical sense.

So the control NVDA f is a good command for find in browse mode.
I'm not sure whether you are talking to me but if you are, I'm 100% ok with the NVDA Find command as it is now!  Apparently, Tyler suggested it to be changed. For me, it's even better to keep it as it is :)

Re: Giving the right amount of feedback

Gene

I really doubt this was done to avoid stopping the inaccessible control f find command presented by browsers.  Consider that if you are reading e-mail in HTML and you want to forward a message, setting control f to browse mode find would cause problems.  In Windows Live Mail, using JAWS, if you issue the forward command while a message is opened,, that is control f for forward, the message automatically closes and the message to be forwarded comes up.  Therefore, while reading mail as HTML, you have to use JAWS key f for JAWS find.  So if someone is used to using control f while reading material in HTML, you now have to use a different command when reading a message for find.  For consistency, NVDA always uses the same command for HTML find because it doesn't conflict with any other command in other programs.  NVDA f is an NVDA command and other programs, that aren't screen-readers, wouldn't use it.

It is a bad idea to assume motivations or reasoning with no evidence.  And the reason you assume makes no logical sense.

Subject: Re: [nvda] Giving the right amount of feedback

Tyler,
I can confirm some of these things you said on your message, specially items 3 and 5.

3. NVDA uses a keyboard hook to intercept all keys. Sometimes it gets into a state where it doesn't pass the keys anywhere.
the result of this is your keyboard no longer works, except for win+l and ctrl+alt+delete. If you press ctrl+alt+delete, you might think you can launch task manager.
As soon as you do, you're back on your normal desktop with NVDA still capturing the keyboard.
The only thing you can do is sign out, losing some or all of your work, or figure out how to kill NVDA either with a second account or with a non-keyboard-based solution.
It used to happen with me quite a while ago. If I'm not going wrong I even posted about it and someone suggested that it could be a problem with my system, something that I was thinking as well, so I just accepted it.
I never thought about using a second account to close NVDA when such a thing happens but this seems like a good solution if it ever happens again. I'll remember it :)

5. If a program stops responding, NVDA goes with it. Take Event Viewer.
View one event's details with enter. From there, press escape and be prepared to figure out how to get NVDA back, because it's most likely going to stop speaking.
Well, usually in such cases I will just do a CTRL+ALT+N and I'm all set again. I would love if everything were too easy :)

6. We know that in notepad, WordPad, Microsoft Word, and other applications, we can press ctrl+f to find things.
However, in browsers, we need to use ctrl+NVDA+f. Why? Because NVDA doesn't want to override the inaccessible browser find dialog.
Ok, this is something I definitely remember posting about, right here. Then someone said they could use the CTRL+F command everywhere and NVDA works just fine, and I'm trying to find out what's the magic behind it until now. Glad to know I'm not alone on this :)

Now, although I've confirmed these points, I don't blame the NVDA developers for all of this. Maybe fixing these things isn't something too easy and since I'm only a user, with very little knowledge about programming, I don't have a clue of the complexity behind it. So maybe we could try and see their side as well, after all despite some annoyances here and there nowadays we have NVDA as an excellent screen reader, and its success among the blind folks only goes to prove it.

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 19.07.2 is now available.
