Sorry for all the questions today. How do you get to the preferences in the latest version of firefox? It says to go to the tthree dots in the right hand corner but of course I can't get there.

Re: issues with web page

Probably because nvda is going into focus mode on that site for some reason

Have to manually switch back to browse mode to navigate the site

I dont know why this is but firefox works fine with it

Chrome just sucks I guess

When you are on the page. start tabbing. You will get to an application. tab once or twice to get to links beyond the application. The application automaticaly places you in forms mode. Return to browse mode, NVDA key space. You can then move normally.

Using Google Voice Webpage with NVDA

First, if you are not already a Google Voice user and have a Google Voice phone number, feel free to mute this topic almost immediately.  What I am about to ask is not about how to use Google Voice, per se, because I do so all the time, but about getting NVDA to "play nice," if possible, with the page for one's Google Voice calling/texting/voicemail as well as the two tabs for archiving and reporting spam.

If I go through the page with NVDA active, via point and click, when I land on the control for "Call" it says, "Call tab selected,"  Note, this is not a browser tab, nor is it presented in the way that tabs are conventionally presented.  I have yet to find a way to do a quick navigation to any of them, though brute force tabbing (or shift+tabbing) always ends up with these controls as part of the traversal.

I also have not figured out, exactly, when it is that NVDA is going to handle the C keyboard shortcut for looking for a combo box versus passing it to Google Voice as a shortcut for "make a call," which it is when Google Voice has control.  Depending on where I have focus on the screen, it sometimes acts as a quick navigation shortcut and others as a Google Voice keyboard shortcut.  And none of these times is when I'm in an edit box, which behaves as I'd expect.

If anyone has experience using Google Voice via the webpage with NVDA who can shed some light about accessing it with NVDA, would you please share?

Re: status of check box and radio boxes

Jonathan COHN

Very hard to tell. If the checkboxes are native ones:
<input role="checkbox" name="myCheckbox">
And NVDA does not announce them then you have found a problem. Sometimes however the web developer has decided they don't like the styles provided by browsers for checkboxes, or they want some additional control in these cases you are likely to see something like:
<div role="checkbox" aria-checked="true" cclass="ckbx uncheck"></div>
Notice how this element has a role this is telling the screen reader hey you know that nondescriptive element div in this case treat it like a checkbox and then the aria-checked attribute in there lets the scree reader know if the checkbox is checked. However, Generally web developers use the "class" attribute to change appearance of elements, and if their Java script updates the class, but does not update the aria-checked you will get as you described, and there is nothing a screen reader can do about this since there are no standards on class and the picture that is changed when the class changes has no attributes and therefore no way to describe it.
Again, one can look at the attributes for this element in either the browsers developer tools, or using the NVDA F1 key sequence and looking at the last couple of lines shown. There should be an attributes line that lists the attributes the browser is providing to the screen reader like tag Name, role etc.

.

We can't answer your question, at least those of us who haven't seen the problem, without at least one web page where you have the problem. Please provide one or preferably two or three addresses to such pages.

Without being able to look at any of the pages, I'll suggest the following:
If you issue a command to check or uncheck a checkbox and there is no indicated change, turn off browse mode and use read current line to read the state of the check box. Then turn browse mode on again and continue what you were doing.

Re: Refresh screen?

Hi,
If I'm understanding this, there's really no command to refresh the screen
as in JAWS, although NVDA+F5 will refresh the browse mode document.
Cheers,

Cannot edit comments in Word with NVDA #advisory

Rowen Cary

I have a document with a number of comments.
When I move to the position containing the comment and press Application to select "Edit Comment", NVDA reports the "Toolbar".
At that time, I could not edit the comment, and press the arrow keys NVDA to not speak.
I got the same effect in Office365 and Office2019.

Do you know how to solve this problem?

Re: Navigation between windows stops when you press the Windows key plus a number combination.

For the sake of completeness, it is also worth noting:

When alt+tabbing, you can also keep alt held down and tap delete to close  the window that would have gained focus if you released alt. (Windows 10 and later).

And if you do use Windows+T to move to the taskbar,  programs with multiple windows open are grouped together and you can choose which you want from there too.

Hi

Yep it opens any of the items there in the running applications area. they are not actually open like a window until you say do windows key + 7 then it will come up. That is the one for my anti virus.

The windows key + letter T will take you to the task bar then you can also use the arrow keys to find what you want then press the enter key on it to open it up.

If you do have windows open use the alt/tab key and it will go between 2 windows..

If you keep on holding down the alt key while tabbing it will take you between all windows open.

Subject: [nvda] Navigation between windows stops when you press the Windows key plus a number combination.

Hi,

maybe you had the same issue and you can help me.

On my task bar at the second position I have the icon of Windows File Manager.

I usually have three or four windows open at the same time of the File Manager, each of which points to a different folder on my computer.

Pressing on the keyboard the shortcut Windows Key plus number 2, I easily open the first File Manager window, and the focus is inside this window.
Pressing Windows Key plus twice number 2 I open the second File Manager window and so on.

So if for example I'm reading something on a web browser window and I want to switch to the second File Manager window, I simply press Window Key plus twice number 2 and the focus moves directly inside this window.

It is a fast and easy way to navigate directly into a specific window.

Basically it works.

But for an unknown reason after some hours I'm working, it doesn't work properly anymore.

This happens:
1. The focus is on a web browser window.
2. I press Windows Key plus number 2 twice.
3. On the task bar is open the preview window of all File Manager windows opened. It is not directly opened the second File Manager window.
Basically it is the same effect as you press Window Key plus T, then you move with the Right arrow on the File Manager window and finally you press Up arrow to enter inside the list of opened File Manager window.
What I have to do at this point is to press left or right key to choose which window I want to open and then press Space Bar key.

It is pretty boring, because I switch continuously from one window to another.

The File Manager window is just an example.
the result it is the same if I have multiple istances of Microsoft Excel window, or Mozilla Firefox window.

I have the feelling it is not depending from the Screen Reader, but it is a Window Operating System issue, maybe a graphic issue?
I've removed all graphic effect, but with no result.

Anyway, somebody who had the same issue solved in some way?

I'm using NVDA at the last version and Windows 10 64 bit last update on a desktop PC.
The same anyway it is also on the laptop with Windows 10.

Thanks a lot.

Re: NVDA and Notepad ++ search

Hi Group,

I am using Notepad Plus Plus 7.67.X.  The 7.91.x version released on November 2 is supposedly the current stable version. However, at the bottom of the page, the following is stated:
"if no major issues are found, auto updater will be triggered in few days."  I wonder if there may be some issue with the latest version. I usually wit until the auto updater kicks in and then i UPDATE.

No, but I doubt this is an NVDA problem. Its probably a Notepad problem since that is a Notepad command. You can check this by testing with another screen-reader.

I am running the latest stable version 7.9.1

1. I use ctrl f to search for something, and I know that that part of
text exist more than one time in that document.

2. then I press F3 to jump to next result

3. NVDA said no more search result in this direction, but actually the
focus has already jump to the new line that matches the search keyword

4. I try pressing ctrl home and start from the very begining, pressing
F3 do also speak no more search ....

I jump to end by ctrl End, then I press F3, NVDA just say the same, no
more search..... but did not have the sound that indicate no next search

result.

Do anyone  has any idea about how to fix this?

Thanks,

William

Re: NVDA and Notepad ++ search

William,

Are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Notepad++?

I am not having the issue you describe.  I just copied and pasted a huge document where the word "using" occurs 27 times.  If I do an Notepad++ search via CTRL+F, I land on the first occurrence of that word and NVDA announces "Using, selected."  Then I close the Find dialog and continue using F3, and on each instance it lands on NVDA says, "Using, selected, unselected."  I am not quite sure why that's how it's phrasing it, but I have a guess.  The instances are highlighted, much like they are selected, but they're not.  I think NVDA's not quite certain initially exactly what is going on, but figures out the correct state pretty quickly.  There is about a one second beat between the "Using, selected," and the following announcement, "unselected."  I did not keep going enough to make the Notepad++ find function wrap, which it's set to do by default after the last instance of something found has been found and you hit F3 immediately afterward.
