Re: NVDA sluggishness w/win 10, my experience

Pramit

Hi Jackie,

There are several reasons why there is so much lag with your system.
Initially as you're doing, update your Windows and along with that also update
your system BIOS, as older drivers could be the culprit here.
After that open the command prompt and do a system file scan.
Once command prompt is opened enter the following "sfc /scannow" and hit enter.
Then wait for the scan to finish.
Also if there was any third party antivirus installed on your computer previously uninstall it.

Finally make sure that that your system has sufficient memory (RAM).

If the system is low on memory and drivers are not updated that will make your system sluggish and
you'll not be able to use NVDA efficiently.

Hope this helps

Pramit

I have a computer I was going to give to my daughter. Unfortunately,
it intermittently kept going into bios instead of booting into
windows. Resetting the computer didn't help. I therefore suspected
either the hard drive or the CMOS battery. Husband Karl took it apart
to replace the battery. He never did find 1 (they're starting not to
use those anymore), but he did find a cable that seemed to have become
detached, which he reconnected. It was still very slow, but at least
it didn't go into bios anymore. I then did a 2nd pc reset, removing
all user files. Once that was done, it was still really slow, I could
just barely use Narrator, &, imo, that's barely usable anyway, though
it is much improved from earlier incarnations. Forget about NVDA--it
simply was not happening. So the first thing I did was disable 1 drive
& Skype from starting up automatically, which tends to occur when
signing into windows via a Microsoft account. That sped things up
*considerably* & NVDA became quite usable at that point.

The bios is 3 versions behind for this machine. Whenever the Windows
10 update finishes (it's a big 1), I'm going to update the bios & pray
I don't brick the machine in doing so. At that point I'll see what
other driver updates are available. I also think I'm gonna run some
hard drive diagnostics to make sure that the hard drive isn't in
trouble, though that's beginning to look less likely now than it did a
day ago. Despite the first reset, I do think the files were corrupted
because of the hardware problems this machine was experiencing, thus
necessitating a 2nd one. The machine is still not as fast as I'd like
to see it, but it's improving.

This was clearly a complex set of issues, but that's actually pretty
typical when fixing these beasties--it's fairly seldom that only 1
thing is wrong w/them, at least from my experience, which is about 30
years worth. I think my point is that if NVDA isn't usable on a given
machine, it's most likely there's something (or things) wrong w/that
machine. Usually, if one thinks about it, the machine is having other
difficulties as well, & these, although annoying, may actually help to
troubleshoot the problem. If you're getting out of memory errors, for
example, then perhaps a ram stick is faulty. If you're getting errors
regarding being unable to access files, then perhaps the hard drive is
the culprit.

Anyway, I hth those who might be having problems w/NVDA on win 10 &
who are looking for resolution of the problem. My particular set of
circumstances will not be applicable, but perhaps my thought processes
might be helpful in spurring yours on toward a successful resolution.

Best wishes & much success. Stay well & safe.

Akapela with NVDA's Sat-All reading few lines at a time?

Gerardo Corripio

I’m using the 3-month license for akapela, especially in hopes of using it with QRead, and other instances in which I’d use the Read-All in Emails, Word documents and other tasks, but the problem I’m noticing is that it only reads a few lines at a time! I have to press the arrow keys and make it read-all again, thus what kind of experience would it be using them like this? My Laptop is an 8GB of Ram, thus what else could it be? What setting should I  try modifying either witA NVDA or Akapela? Because the documents I read with other voices like Vocalizer, read just fine with Say-All! Thanks for tips/tricks you guys might have on this issue.

They used NVDA and Firefox, but I would imagine it would be very similar with any browser, just taking into account any browser specific command differences.

I'm not convinced it is necessary or a good idea to update the BIOS unless it provides features that are wanted or needed.  I'm very doubtful that the BIOS is causing sluggishness.

Creating a New Document with NVDA G-docs

David Russell

Hello NVDA Group,

I am stymied on what hot key combination to use that will allow me to
create a blank document using NVDA on G-docs.

Screen reader support is enabled.

When I find the line that says, "Click + to create new document," A
form field opens if I press NVDA key (insert) and spacebar at the same
time. I am not sure what this field allows.

If I try to copy the document from clipboard, nothing indicates it pasted.

Any tips would be helpful as all the tutorials seem to start with how
to open a doc not create a doc. Thanks.

Usually, Mack, runtime error means the website encountered some sort
of problem & has nothing to do w/you or your choices. Had your card
not been able to be approved, then you should have received a message

Re: WeatherPlus, adding new cities

Vincent Le Goff

Thanks for the explanation.

Since my Internet connection is pretty unreliable these days, it turned out I had to be patient but I found my city and I preset it.  Thanks again !

Hi Vincent,

You must have an internet connection before you try this.
Try doing the following.

1.  Open the NVDA menu/preferences/Weather plus menu.
2.  Move to the set and manage your cities item and press enter.
3.  In the edit combo box, type the name of your city with either US state or other country's designation for country such as UK for United Kingdom or any other designation and press enter.
4.  A list of cities or perhaps if you are specific enough only one city--hopefully, your location, will appear.
5.  Choose the city you want and press enter.
6.  Wait a few seconds or if sounds are enable until you hear a sound and then tab once.
7.  You should see a test button.
8.  Press enter or space bar on the test button.
9.  You will either hear a sound  and hear your screen reader give an error message or hopefully if you were close enough in your search criteria a city name with associated code.
10.  Then use the tab key to move to either the add button--which will put the city in your list as a temporary city or tab until you hear preset--which will add your city to the current list as the default for your location and press enter.

Then you can go back in if desired using steps one and two of this tutorial and then when in the lis of cities, move to the former location and use the tab key to move to the remove button. Otherwise you can leave the former location as a temporary city if desired.

I have over 100 cities in my list for the USA and world.  It's kind of fun playing with them if you have nothing better to do.  I have the check box under settings set to copy the weather forecast to clipboard when I press the NVDA + W key for forecasts.  What's the weather in Hanoi Vietnam?

In Hanoi vietnam, the forecast for today is scattered thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 67 and a minimum of 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
sunday 5 april scattered thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 66 and a minimum of 64 degrees.
Monday 6 scattered thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 67 and a minimum of 65 degrees.
Tuesday 7 scattered thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 69 and a minimum of 66 degrees.
Wednesday 8 mostly cloudy with a maximum temperature of 71 and a minimum of 67 degrees.
Thursday 9 mostly cloudy with a maximum temperature of 77 and a minimum of 69 degrees.
Friday 10 thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 79 and a minimum of 73 degrees.
Saturday 11 thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 74 and a minimum of 72 degrees.
sunday 12 thunderstorms with a maximum temperature of 76 and a minimum of 71 degrees.

Hi everyone,

I know the question has been asked many times on this list and I'm sorry to add yet a new one, but I can't find the answer anywhere.

I'm using the last version of WeatherPlus with the stable version of NVDA and I don't find how to add new cities, or even change my current city.  Yes, I have moved, so I would appreciate to retrieve up-to-date information about the weather.  When I select "manage temporary cities" it seems I can only select in a list... with only one city (the current selection).  No button to add or remove.  In the "manage cities" settings, there's a simple text field with, again, only one line.  No button to add a new city or search for one.  There was a documentation in this menu before but it seems it has vanished.  Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance,

Vincent

Make sure that Windows is maximized while using Microsoft Teams, so that you can move focus.
To maximize the Windows press Windows Key + Up Arrow.

Hope this helps

Re: Issue with Microsoft teams

Hello Surendra,

I am experiencing the issue you are describing with teams. My guess is the problem is caused by a Chrome bug which will be fixed soon from what I've heard. The bug it seems is affecting Teams also because it's based on Chrome. To work around the issue, you can change the window size as follows:
A quick way to do this is to hold the windows key, and while holded to press up arrow to maximize the window if not maximized, and then press down arrow to restore it.
If you care about the window size because you're using magnification for example, let me know, I can provide more detailed way to keep the window size not changed I hope.
Let me also know if this doesn't work for you.

All the best!

Re: Issue with Microsoft teams

Mike Sedmak

Please look in the group archives. See the link at the bottom of the email to get to the groups website. There was a very thorough discussion of using teams earlier this week.

Thanks,
Mike

According to the information, as I recall, you need to subscribe to the list on a web page, but you can check.  It appears you can’d do so with ee-mail commands, though perhaps there is a way, not described there.

Is there a list of users of audacity and nvda? If so can you give me the link? Your time and help is greatly appreciated.

Best is a meaningless term in this context.  Best for what?  Do you want good effects?  Do you want specific abilities or features?  Your question cannot be properly answered.

However, if you want to try a free multitrack recording program that is quite accessible and that is already used by a lot of blind people, there is a blind users list, you may want to try Audacity.  If you want a program that has professional effects and perhaps other features I don’t know about, you may want something else.

This is not correct.

CDex has an analogue  recording function  so is perfectly feasible as a recording tool.

Check out the second menu option under Tools – analogue recording where you can set input devices including  choice of microphone and you can also specify sampling rates etc.

CDex is not a recording program.  It is a CD ripping program.

It really isn’t a good idea for people, and I see it when evber such a question is asked, to recommend Goldwave without first knowing what a person wants to do.  Goldwave is not free.  It isn’t expensive unless you don’t have much money and you are on a tight budget, but it does cost something like forty or fifty U.S. dollars.

If you just want to record and edit mp3 files, MP3 Direct Cut is a much better choice.  If you want to record and work with other formats, other programs would be used, MP3 Direct Cut only works with MP3 files but since many people just want to record and edit MP3 files, the way the person wants to use the program needs to be found out before making a recommendation.

Okay great! I have heard of this but wasn't sure if it was accessible. Is there a list of people using reaper with nvda? Also how do I get the scripts to use with nvda? Thanks again for all your help.

You can use reaper, audacity is free, but I personally do not like it. Reaper is about $60 but you get multi ck, midi support and it's very accessible with the osara scripts that have ben written for NVDA.
