Hi folks


I've had some difficulty searching the archives, but noticed a lot of discussion about Remote Access tools on here recently.

Do any of the mainstream tools work with NVDA please?  I work remotely and need a Remote Access tool to enable me to get sighted support from colleagues from time to time. My colleagues have already looked at Team Viewer and discounted it, though they did not say what Screen Readers they had tried it with. I know there is a product called UNICORN which looks promising, but I cannot find much information about it as I was unable to find an English link on the Dutch site.

If it were simply a question of NVDA to NVDA remote access I would happily use NVDA remote as it is a fantastic tool.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear NVDA community,

 

With the merging of speech refactor work into threshold branch, Project Threshold has formally launched (expect a notice from NV Access people regarding this).

 

An important notice for users of my add-ons: if you are using any of my add-ons and plan to participate in Project Threshold, you MUST install add-on updates destined for today. This is because the minimum add-on API version for Threshold will be 2019.3, and also because there will be changes in Threshold that will break many add-ons, including some of mine.

 

The following add-ons will receive updates today:

 

  • Add-on Updater
  • Easy Table Navigator
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures
  • Golden Cursor (deep maintenance only)
  • GoldWave
  • ObjPad
  • Object Location Tones
  • Resource Monitor
  • StationPlaylist (both stable only)
  • Virtual Review
  • Windows 10 App Essentials

 

Notes for some add-ons:

 

  • Add-on Updater: this update will go out first; you must install this add-on first. Also, if anyone is participating in Project Threshold and installs this add-on, Add-on Updater will now install updates for add-ons that does declare support for Threshold i.e. 2019.3-dev; that is, if the last tested NVDA version is earlier than 2019.3, Add-on Updater Threshold edition won’t even attempt to install the add-on update. This is done so you are protected from updates that could break in Threshold.
  • Golden Cursor: the upcoming version will be the last version to be maintained by me.
  • Resource Monitor: Psutil dependency will be updated to 5.6.2 to resolve package generation bug caused by a missing file and to bring updated features.
  • StationPlaylist: Studio 5.20 or later will be required. Also, support for Threshold will be added to 18.09.x-LTS in the next release (scheduled for end of May).
  • SystrayList: this will be the last version to be powered by Python 2, and consequently supporting old NVDA releases earlier than 2019.1.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: effective with today’s build, end of support countdown for Version 1803 (April 2018 Update/build 17134) will be in effect. For now the add-on will install on Version 1803, but a June snapshot will drop support for it; consequently, from that future snapshot onwards, Version 1809 (October 2018 Update/build 17763) or later will be required as for add-on support policy (supporting Insider build, latest, immediate past release, with a given stable release supported for at least fifteen months). Support for Version 1803 from this add-on will end in July.

Hi Troy,

you can get NVDA not to say "Desktop List" if you add it as a dictionary entry. I just tried it and NVDA only says "Desktop" when I use NVDA+m to minimise to the desktop.

At first nothing happened so I used the speech viewer (in Tools) to find out exactly waht was said, and there are two spaces between Desktop and List.

So, if you go into the default dictionary and add "Desktop  List" without the quote marks in the Pattern field, and enter just Desktop in the Replacement field, you'll only hear "Desktop" when you go to the desktop.

It says desktop list because because you are in a list, just as when you open Windows Explorer, it tells you what structure you are in or when a menu or dialog opens.  This is something that you can argue is excess verbiage regarding the desktop, or you could argue that it is being consistent.  It is saying list because you are in one, it isn't saying that the desktop has to be a list, but rather desktop, you are in a list, to expand what is actually being stated.

I don't know if you can change what it says when you go to the desktop.  I assume you are using Windows 10.  It may be a question of changing something in Windows 10.  I very much doubt that NVDA has a way of changing such announcements.  also, how long have you been using NVDA?  I suspect that if you use it regularly for another week or two, you'll hardly be bothered by the announcement. 
 
If you don't want to hear level announcements, open the object presentation dialog with control NVDA key o.  Tab to announce position information.  It's a check box.  Uncheck it with the space bar.  Tab to the ok button and activate it.

Hi Luke,

Thank you for your response and suggestion. I shared it with our Drupal developer who thinks it could be an empty accesskey attribute which is being added by Superfish. He's going to look into that and I'll post back later with an update on this. Many thanks.

Hi.

Simply put, no. Create profiles for applications where you want this to be turned off, though, like in Windows/File Explorer.

It is already done, but:

1. How can this satisfaction survey achieve satisfactory results when it is intended for English-speaking users only?

2. Would it be impossible to offer this survey in other languages?

3. If we have NVDA translations for other languages, this means that screen reader users do not understand the English language.

4. Is it reasonable to place this request of NVAccess in the list of the Portuguese community of NVDA?

5. You can tell me that the google translator should be used. But will this be the same thing?

6. Some time ago, someone argued that a certain element, indispensable for the development of NVDA, should not be translated, because all those who wish to contribute dominate the English language. I am in total disagreement!

Here, two things happen:
1. If I press NVDA+M, NVDA says "desktop" before saying the shortcut I'm on.
2. If I press Win+D, NVDA says "folder list".
Either way, it says anything before the shortcut, what changes is what it says.

Nonetheless, none of the behavior described bothers me.

it's a standard windows shortcut, windows+D will take you to the desktop from anywhere on the PC.

Hi Jackie,

Feel free to send them to me at info@... and I can have a look.

Are you using any add-ons?  If you press NVDA+Q then down arrow to "Restart NVDA with add-ons disabled" you can do that and that will confirm whether any add-ons are impacting things.

Where can I send a log regarding my issues w/NVDA 2019.1 & Excel 2010.
I realize it's kind of an old version, but it is still supported.

Basically, when I'm using Excel, everything just freezes. I can also
send the file that caused the problem, if requested.

i wish to hear the number of items and dont miss for example: 1 of 30.
i dont want extra informations to be read.
is there a solution that i turn off position information, but nvda
still announces number of items, like 1 of 30 as you mentioned?

Subject: [nvda] a couple of changes I want to make in NVDA


Hi all,


I'm a long time jaws user and as such I want to make NVDA sound as much
like jaws as possible. I notice that when I go to the desktop with NVDA
it says desktop window and not just desktop and I want to see if I can
make that change. Also, I've only noticed this in thunderbird so far but
NVDA might tell me that my inbox is on level 1 and something else is on
level 2, can that be turned off where it doesn't tell me the levels? I
looked through settings and turned off a few other things that I don't
want to hear but it didn't give me a chance to turn off the level
announcement where I set the rest of it like I like it.

Confirmed just went into my c: drive into my music folder with heaps of albums and it does not speak it only the file you are on and not the one of 2000 if you get what i mean.


My self i would rather the extra info but then again I am wondering if a profile could be setup to mention in one spot and not the other.


My self i would just leave it on just in case there are side effects like just seen.

I don't know if you can change what it says when you go to the desktop.  I assume you are using Windows 10.  It may be a question of changing something in Windows 10.  I very much doubt that NVDA has a way of changing such announcements.  also, how long have you been using NVDA?  I suspect that if you use it regularly for another week or two, you'll hardly be bothered by the announcement. 
 
If you don't want to hear level announcements, open the object presentation dialog with control NVDA key o.  Tab to announce position information.  It's a check box.  Uncheck it with the space bar.  Tab to the ok button and activate it.

Also, if you turn off the announcement of position information, you won't just not hear level announcements, you won't hear information such as 10 of 30 when you are moving down a list such as of files and folders.
