Re: PDF Alternative Apart from Edge?

I like to use bookworrm. The only problem I notice is: it tweaks the lines to have the same cize, so it adds artificial line breaks.
It makes us not able to read by paragraphs and you need to remove line breaks when you're copying quotes to make a paper.
If you just want to read continuously, it's really nice!

Re: can't get nvda remote to work

Glenn

You said you are using "nvdaremote" for the host. I don't know if you meant that literally, but if so, be aware that it should be "nvdaremote.com".

You were probably just using shorthand there, but I have seen such seemingly obvious oversights cripple many hours of productivity as well, so thought I would point it out.

I am using nvdaremote for the host, and I have tried generating a key and I have made up a 4-digit key and nothing works.
I used to use this all the time, so it isn't from me not having experience with it.
Any help is appreciated.

I cannot get NVDA to find that play control, either.  If I hover the mouse over it, NVDA announces, "To get missing image descriptions, open the context menu."  And that is whether it's the initial one, or if I start playing, pause the video, and the subsequent play arrow shows in the center.  I also have never seen an embedded video player that uses this style elsewhere.

I have no idea how to get at the context menu to which NVDA is making reference, as if I do SHIFT+F10 I get the standard browser context menu which has nothing to do with unlabeled images or getting image descriptions.  I am using Brave when doing this testing.

locked The NVDA Chat Subgroup - An Introduction (Announcement Only)

Hello All,

Every once in a great while it doesn't hurt to post a reminder about the existence of same, as newer members may not be aware of its existence.  Here's the group description:  The Chat Subgroup is dedicated to the discussion of anything its members want to discuss.  There are no topic restrictions.  Many topics have a technical focus on configuring or controlling specific programs where how to use them, not using NVDA itself, is the primary focus.  Others are purely social in nature.  The Chat Subgroup allows those members of the NVDA community who wish to engage in discussions not focused on NVDA to do so and to keep those conversations separate from the main NVDA group.

The bulk of the conversations on the Chat Subgroup have trended toward discussions of how to use a given piece of software - how to get to specific settings, etc. - that have nothing to do with which screen reader you're using, per se.  But, within the bounds of civility, pretty much any topic anyone wishes is allowed there.  It's a way that members of the community can discuss any sort of non-NVDA topic with other members of the community who have joined and wish to participate in those.

Sure it is.  But even if it isn't, I don't work for NVAccess, and I don't code in python.  When someone's offered to do something, for free, that you want done then you can either accept or decline.  If someone else wants to step up to do this, then have at it.

I presume someone asking for this sort of thing has been a long term JAWS user, who has compiled an extensive dictionary, and does not want to have to start over again from scratch when starting to use NVDA.  So far, based on those who've contacted me, that presumption has been valid.

And you've been around long enough to have seen me make the statement that any screen reader user should have at least basic competence in a screen reader other than their preferred one.  With NVDA and Narrator available, JAWS users have no excuse, and with Narrator available NVDA users have no excuse.  There are times when any screen reader "doesn't play well" with a given thing that another screen reader will.  It's gonna happen, so it makes sense to be prepared for when it does.

Hello.

I'm a researcher at the University of Washington. We are putting together the first-ever accessible instance of the summer program, AI4ALL.
AI4ALL aims to introduce highschoolers from underrepresented groups to artificial intelligence via a summer program.
My team and I are trying very hard to adapt all the learning material that the national AI4ALL organization made available (this is a basic Artificial Intelligence curriculum) and we are struggling.
The current curriculum is heavily python-based with a reliance on the scikit python library. So my preference is to be able to use the library, but find accessible programming environments that could still make use of the base code.
We have been trying to work with Quorum, the accessible IDE and language, to create wrappers for the python libraries, with no success thus far.

I looked up information about accessibility and python and found your group, with the most recent relevant thread dating to 2016, pointing at EdSharp, but it looks like that project has not been updated in a while and there is no one currently maintaining it on github, so I'm leery of asking young students to use something that isn't currently supported.

Does anyone here have any ideas? have you had experience coding in python in any environment that was NVDA-friendly?
Looking at our larger goals (of integrating a bunch of python notebooks into accessible learning materials) do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Kind regards,
