Try one other one thing, just in case - in both IE, and firefox, ctrl + F6 might toggle focus between address bar, and webpage contents.

As in, try hitting alt + D to focus on address bar again, and then ctrl + F6 to, possibly, jump to/focus on the webpage itself.

But, this might not solve the problem at all, but, is just a keystroke combination I have used for a while with multiple screen readers to, at times, make sure it is focused on webpage contents.

Thanks Joseph,

I’m glad I’m not alone. I ahve seen some improvement when tabbing around some web sites but unfortunately, not many. If the site has a lot of places that would trigger focus mode, it doesn’t tend to work.

I’m all ears for any ways to deal with this as I’m effectively shut out of browsing, reading or tasks for my job, on the Windows machine anyway.

Apologies in advance for the length of this post. I downloaded the latest version of NVDA the day it came out and began to notice right away that I was having a problem with focus mode when opening web pages.

My sistem is as follows:

Windows 7 latest updates
Web browsers: Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox

All of my other programs have no issues with NVDA.

Here’s what happens when I open a web page.

Nothing is announced until I alt-tab away from the page. then the title of the page is announced but the word “document” is after the title of the web page.

Focus mode appears to be on.

Here’s what I’ve done.

1. toggled Focus Mode with NVDA-space. with no effect and no speech or sound with each toggle 2. Hit escape several times with no speech, audio or change.
3. Made sure the numlock key was off, toggled it on and off again. This function spoke but had no effect on Focus Mode.
4. Left the web page and tried focus mode in another app, Outlook 2007, worked as normal.
5. Tried both browsers, same result, Focus Mode locked.
6. Updated Windows7, IE and Firefox. Restarted computer, no change.
7. downloaded and stalled a new version of NVDA over the old one. Restarted computer, no change.
8. Removed NVDA and reinstalled the version I’d downloaded, all mentioned versions are current btw. No change.
9. I even tried Window-Eyes to see if it was my computer. No, Window-Eyes worked fine on both browsers.

I then looked at the settings for browsers but didn’t understand several of them. I tried toggling them on/off and testing web pages but no change.

Any idea what’s going on here?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Mario. NVda works fine for me no matter where in WIN 10 I'm in except for Firefox. It is slow if I'm on news sites. I tend to only keep 2 tabs open everyday. The FB mobile site and the media center page for Gameday Audio for Major League Baseball.

I now use the jaws 17 full-time for these reasons.
jaws is not slow in any situation like this occurred with NVDA.

I only use 3 extras.
I do not need anything else.

NVDA is getting slower and every a new version.
this makes me worry.

I think the team of NVDA has to think about this with more seriously.

cheers.

System: Windows 7, NVDA 2016.2, Firefox, any version.
This has always been an ongoing problem, but it seems to be more prevalent
now.
If you have a number of tabs open in Firefox, NVDA will begin to slow down
appreciably in the program. Responses to key presses are delayed and using
the browser becomes problematic and inefficient. The only solution is to
restart firefox.
In previous versions of NVDA, this decrease in responsivness took a while to
manifest--sometimes I could work for a whole day and NVDA would not slow
down until the next.
However, now it barely takes six to ten hours for this slowness to occur.
The only way to reproduce this step is to to work in Firefox for a while,
with a number of tabs open.
I do not know if this same slowness occurs in Internet Explorer, Chrome or
Edge.
I would like to know if others have experienced this decrease in
performance, and what--if any--solutions are available to counteract this
problem.

Thanks Jacob,

I just tried this, toggling control-F6 and though it did exactly what it was supposed to do in terms of moving me between the search bar and the web page contents, it did nothing to effect focus mode with NVDA.

I’ll try anything though so never fear.

Questions about a cappella TTS

Tony James <megatronjames@...>

Hi, I have downloaded the trial version of this TTS and have set my preferences just so. NVDA does not seem to save my settings however upon shutdown i.e. TTS goes back to Michael from Microsoft and my key echo settings are changed to default. Does this have to do with the fact that I didn't pay for the Tts yet? Is there a way to pay for this TTS without going through PayPal? Thx

Thats always a good choice when its needed.
Sadly it looks like version 47 has introduced a few issues, navigational sounds does not work, mozilla has depricated some libraries.
Here's the thing, the brouser has actually got faster.
I have noticed that stuff that would take a few seconds more to load seems to have gotten well faster.
reportedly we are supposed to se vp8 codec and html5 full support in this version and while flash if its installed can and will be used where html5 exists it will be prefured over flash so things are going up.
I have not as of today downloaded anything though I did last night.
I am currently trying to get through today's data stream which is not to much before I need to get out of the country on my vacation so I am only interested in really making sure everything is done as I will not be using the net at all whilst away and I want to be up to date as I can before I leave.

Re: nvda and other screen readers

Well it doesn't matter now.
In the beginning there were screen readers, and they were chained together.
If 1 was installed it was good.
If more than 1 was installed then you needed to do something with the registry and gdichain.ini to make the chain to the video card where the last thing on the chain loaded the videocard and itself.
And that was fun, load in the wrong order, uninstall in the wrong order and or start 2 together and you died the horrible death to be fixed by a good helthy reformat in the rear of your back!
Then along came dcm and that was fine then along came mirror drivers and that to was fine.
Now uia intergrates everything so it really doesn't matter unless you have an old version and then it won't work anyway.
Sadly thats only been round with the nt non dos bassed oses as with winme-98-95 all versions it didn't matter.
But thats the way with trying to secure hardware and things no direct access, the system does that but you need to find the right port and the right plugs and it gets complex.
I used to have everything setup then I would flux it up and it was so darn easy to do that and while I may get one back getting 2 was out of the question.
I needed someone at support to make the chain as it was anyway.
And that was for dolphin and jaws.
So every so often I'd fail at computing and it was another reformat.
Now if I need 2 running I can and often do when some stuff on nvda does not read the other one hal will do that, but it may not read what nvda reads so yeah it works.

I'm still trying to get NVDA set up for Braille. Here are the
instuctions I gave my sighted assistant.

Here are the instructions I received for setting up NVDA for Braille.
Download the Freedom Scientific drivers using the link in the User's
Guide. In the NVDA menus go to preferenced, Braille, and pick Pac Mate.
Click ok.

He apparently downloaded the Freedom Scientific drivers and then tried
to reinstall NVDA. Now he says it won't respond. I have no access to the

We tried to install Jaws, but it hangs about halfway through. I
contacted Freedom Scientific. They had him try various download paths
last Thurday, but they haven't been in touch with us this Thursday.
Their customer support is lousy since they were acquired.

Re: Where can I find sample voices for Ocapella

Greg Wocher

Hello,

I purchased the lower quality version not to far back. I found a big issue with this synth. When moving thru words character by character Acapela will not read the vowels. It reads them just fine when either doing a say all or reading by word but not when reading character by character. I just wanted to make others aware of this when looking at this synth. I did not purchase the higher quality so I am not sure if that version has the same issue or not.

The gear icon has been used for the tools menu in lots of places for years.  I believe you will find it in Internet Explorer probably going back to version 5.x and probably below.  I don't know if it particularly matters to designers if that makes much sense and I don't know if it does visually.  I would think a tools icon should be a tiny representation of some tools or of a tool chest but a gear is not a tool.

I agree! I much prefer text descriptions.

But as you know, almost everyone, e.g. Apple, Google, Microsoft really, really love the graphical user interface.

The gear symbol has become a cross platform annoyance for some of us, but many people look for it to adjust settings for Safari, Google, photography sites, chess sites...whatever.

I suppose gears are used to adjust many mechanical things like watches, etc, so the symbolism carried over to iconism.

Just my half-asleep thoughts.

So then, why don't google simply label it as settings button drop down or
something more obvious than at present.

Gary,

The answer to this depends on which Google pages you're talking
about.  On pages such as Gmail's page and the Google Calendar, where the
button is presented "wide" and there is a dropdown arrow next to the gear I
can consistently find it by doing an NVDA search using "settings" as my
search criterion.  NVDA throws focus on to the button, announcing, "Menu
Button collapsed, submenu settings."  If one then hits Enter the dropdown
menu appears and you can arrow up or down through it.

On other Google pages, e.g., Drive, where it does not appear as a
stand alone button but as a button on a toolbar I get myself into Browse
mode and either use B or SHIFT+B to traverse buttons until I land on the
settings button in the toolbar, which is announced, "Toolbar Settings Menu
Button collapsed submenu."  Again if you hit enter the settings menu itself
will open.   There's got to be a better way than this but I've not practiced
enough with the touch cursor features yet, which might prove helpful here.
There aren't that many buttons on most of these pages so resorting to a
brute force search traversal is not an all day affair.

Jenine:

I have reported this issue before with a NVDA log attached with no
solution to the NVDA list. This focus mode problem happens for me as
well with NVDA 2016.2 at work. The only solution I have is to install
NVDA 2015.3 onto your computer. Ever since 2015.4 for me it seems to
not work. NVDA 2016.2 works fine on my computer at home.

Check your NVDA error log and see if any of these lines are present
when you load a webpage: (I have NVDA set on debug logging level)
<virtualBuffers.gecko_ia2.Gecko_ia2 object at 0x059FAFD0>
ERROR - virtualBuffers.Gecko_ia2._loadBuffer
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "virtualBuffers\__init__.pyo", line 369, in _loadBuffer
WindowsError: [Error 1702] The binding handle is invalid

Thank you,

Ethan

I’ll try anything though so never fear.

But, this might not solve the problem at all, but, is just a keystroke

Thanks Joseph,

I’m glad I’m not alone. I ahve seen some improvement when tabbing around
some web sites but unfortunately, not many. If the site has a lot of
places that would trigger focus mode, it doesn’t tend to work.

I’m all ears for any ways to deal with this as I’m effectively shut out of
browsing, reading or tasks for my job, on the Windows machine anyway.

Subject: [nvda] Issue with focus mode in 2016.2

Apologies in advance for the length of this post. I downloaded the latest
version of NVDA the day it came out and began to notice right away that I
was having a problem with focus mode when opening web pages.

My sistem is as follows:

Windows 7 latest updates
Web browsers: Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox

All of my other programs have no issues with NVDA.

Here’s what happens when I open a web page.

Nothing is announced until I alt-tab away from the page. then the title
of the page is announced but the word “document” is after the title of
the web page.

Focus mode appears to be on.

Here’s what I’ve done.

1. toggled Focus Mode with NVDA-space. with no effect and no speech or
sound with each toggle 2. Hit escape several times with no speech, audio
or change.
3. Made sure the numlock key was off, toggled it on and off again. This
function spoke but had no effect on Focus Mode.
4. Left the web page and tried focus mode in another app, Outlook 2007,
worked as normal.
5. Tried both browsers, same result, Focus Mode locked.
6. Updated Windows7, IE and Firefox. Restarted computer, no change.
7. downloaded and stalled a new version of NVDA over the old one.
Restarted computer, no change.
8. Removed NVDA and reinstalled the version I’d downloaded, all mentioned
versions are current btw. No change.
9. I even tried Window-Eyes to see if it was my computer. No, Window-Eyes
worked fine on both browsers.

I then looked at the settings for browsers but didn’t understand several
of them. I tried toggling them on/off and testing web pages but no
change.

Any idea what’s going on here?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hello,

I purchased the lower quality version not to far back. I found a big
issue with this synth. When moving thru words character by character
Acapela will not read the vowels. It reads them just fine when either
doing a say all or reading by word but not when reading character by
character. I just wanted to make others aware of this when looking at
this synth. I did not purchase the higher quality so I am not sure if
that version has the same issue or not.

I think Computer Room Services in UK sells it and allow payment through
credit card.

Hi, I have downloaded the trial version of this TTS and have set my
preferences just so. NVDA does not seem to save my settings however upon
shutdown i.e. TTS goes back to Michael from Microsoft and my key echo
settings are changed to default. Does this have to do with the fact that I
didn't pay for the Tts yet? Is there a way to pay for this TTS without
going through PayPal? Thx
