Firefox going blank on edit boxes

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Hi,

I am using NVDA 2016.2 with the latest Firefox in Windows 10.

I frequently find that when I open a registration page in Firefox, the edit boxes are showing and when I press enter to open the edit box I get a confirmation sound of opening . However, when I type my user name in , nothing appears.  I thought this might have to do with having Java Access bridge enabled but that is enabled so that cannot explain the problem!

Can anyone explain what is happening and how I can fix it?

All the best,

Cearbhall

I don't - I just press NVDA + F9 to start selection, and NVDA + F10
handles the copy to clipboard between the two points.

And, this is with latest, 2016.2.1.

Hello all,

I haven't followed the list for some time, so I don't know whether this
has been discussed previously.

For a few days now, I find that I can't copy text to clipboard via the
NVDA+f9-NVDA+f10 commands.
Actually, I find it difficult also to select text using the normal
Windows Shift+Down Arrow command. The only thing that seems to work is
selecting by character.

I'm running Windowss10, with the latest NVDA Next snapshot, but this has
been going on for a week at least.

I first noticed it after installing the development version of Instant
Translate to test, but I don't think this has anything to do with the issue.
Just to make sure, I uninstalled the add-on, but the problem didn't go
away.

Has anyone experienced the same problem? How have you solved it, if you
have at all?
Ciao, thanks in advance.

FW: Windows 10 Mail app not speaking as I type

Brian Crabtree <briancrabtree@...>

This is an update to my attached recent post, in the hope that it points the devs to the solution.

I have discovered that NVDA will speak each line of a message as I select it using Alt plus down arrow – but only 1 line at a time. If I select 3 lines it speaks only the last one selected. Selecting a large section of text and asking it to speak the selected text gives nothing.

It will also speak any characters that I backspace over as I try to correct my typing, but will not speak anything else.

Finally, NVDA did speak the text of the first message I opened, but only on the first time I opened it – on that occasion it said “Message document”, but on other occasions it said “Message document message edit read only”, so when it adds “read only” it actually will not read it!

Someone suggested that I set it to speak characters as well as words, but that made no difference.

Does anyone know whether any of this will be corrected, either by the August 2nd update or by the upcoming NVDA release?

If I hit CTRL plus N for a new message or CTRL plus R to reply to a message in the Windows 10 Mail app, NVDA says “Message edit read only” and then nothing, whether I arrow back to correct something or just keep typing. Review mode does not work either.

In a new message, it does not speak as I type the Subject, but if I go back to correct a word it does speak the subject.

Is there a trick to getting it to speak text as I type?

I have NVDA set to speak words, not characters. I think I am up to date with NVDA at version 2016.2.1 and the Mail app at version 17. Brian

Sorry, but I should have said I was selecting text using Shift plus down arrow, not Alt.

Also, in the reading pane, if I hit Shift plus Tab it reads the subject, addressee, etc. Tabbing back down does not get it reading the message content, however.

Hi Olli,

You may used as alternative keystroke by copying certain text by pressing Control plus shift plus left or right arrow keys. You have to ensure to move the focus position to the word or text first to make it more effectively to select and copy from the clipboard.

If someone wants to send me the file on which they'd like me to do the test (so that it's open in the program that seems to be causing difficulty) I'd be happy to do this.

I routinely use the Windows CTRL+C (copy), CTRL+X (cut), and CTRL+V commands in a variety of programs, and between them, but generally without NVDA.  I've never had a single problem with these keyboard shortcuts in any way.  I can also do whatever you wish using NVDA.

Hi Cearbhall,

The modern powerPoint file is a package file. A lot of it is XML. You can review tables in slide show mode but otherwise, as of this writing, I think we will have to edit tables outside PowerPoint. Having said that, it is worth exploring if the tables are rendered in the NVDA object model and if we can’t build in that feature into NVDA.

Pranav,

Thanks for this detail! I am coming to realise more and more that Powerpoint is simply a tool for managing parts of a flat text file. This occurred to me when I opened a PowerPoint file on the iPhone. The iphone ignores the various control characters that Powerpoint embeds in the file to create the slides and various display options. It simply presents the flat file!

In that case, I suppose that PowerPoint is not capable of creating a Word table which we could navigate by using the usual screen reader table navigation controls.

If I am right about the basic nature of the PowerPoint file, and I am open to criticism on this if anyone can advise me, then the Powerpoint program is simply picking up certain characters that mean the beginning and end of a slide and various other characters that mark the beginning and end of its various object placeholders

For this reason, I think we can only make use of the  F6 key and the tab and arrows to get around the PowerPoint document. I know JAWS offers far more but I think these are only gilding the lily!

All the best,

Hi Cearbhall,

I usually edit tables in Word or Excel and then get them into Powerpoint. If I must edit them in PowerPoint, I then use word by word navigation with the ctrl+left and right arrow and line by line navigation to move around in the table. The only way I know of is to be familiar with the content of the table so that you know what you are editing. I wish there was a better answer.

Good to hear your experience. I am relieved to find that your experience reflects my own.

I am particularly interested in the detail of navigating tables. As you say, column divisions are not echoed  so:

1.      How do you know when you are in one column or another?

2.      Is there any way of knowing which column your active point is in?

3.      What keystrokes are involved apart from those which you have already described?

Hi all,

In terms of table navigation and editing:

1.       I can read tables in slide show mode.

2.       When in object navigation mode, reading of a table or editing a table is difficult because column seperators are not spoken. This used to happen even with Jaws version 16 I think.

3.       I am on PowerPoint 2016 and  whatever has been discussed so far is applicable to that version.

4.       The tab and shift+tab are standard keystrokes. The same applies to f6 and shift+f6.

Notes on the use of PowerPoint with NVDA

1. File opens in slide view

2. Page Down moves from slide to slide showing the title pane

For the first slide:

3. Press tab to move to the title placeholder. NVDA reads the title of the slide;

4. Press tab again to move to the subtitle placeholder. NVDA reads the subtitle;

5. Press tab again to move to the embedded graphic. NVDA  says "Graphic" if no alt text;

Hi,

I have taken on a new project in which I have to be able to read several PowerPoint presentations. Are there any guides for using PowerPoint with NVDA? Can anyone give me any pointers from their own experience?

Re: vox clock please help me try to get one

Are you wed to the Version 3?  Right now there are a number of Version 2 Vox Clocks up on eBay.  The Version 3s also come up with some regularity, so you could set an automatic search to e-mail you when one does.

The last one I can find that's a Version 3 sold last month for $40.

Hello all
I am trying to promote my face book group I created here, this is not a real thing is just a place where people can come and chat, I have a few people in here already, but I wanted to spread the word and maybe get some more people in it, it doesn't matter who you are,
How you've treated us in the past, or anything like that, just come on in and it's a good place to get a second chance, if you've been wanting one
For those who don't need one, just please come on in and enjoy the group, I want to try to get some activity and if possible, so post whatever you want, only rule is to just have some fun, as a matter fact there's not any, I'm going to stop rambling on and here's the link, thanks, patrick

Was this not a rebadged Sharp?
I'm sure somebody can suggest a better list to ask on. I doubt if there will be many about unless they have started making them again. I have a Sharp clock from that era, it has a stopwatch and soome other functions as well as time but no date. the voice sounds like a Dalek though, but is understandable. Tandy used to sell a version of this clock under their own brand name of Radio Shack back then.
They also used to sell a talking multimeter, and I wish I'd bought one!

Hay I know this list is about nvda butt I was wondering if any one can tell me ware to get a clock called vox clock 3. I know this sounds very odd butt I was at a friends house and he had this vox clock 3. If you do a google search on this you will hear the alarms and the voice and you will know what I mean. I use to have this clock when I was a kid butt it broke. It is a 1980s clock from radio shack.

Hmm I have a feeling the lag issue is one of processor throttling as we have seen before for other things. Microsoft s speeds up the core of a processor in a so called inteligent way to aid power saving for laptops, but its a bit slow sometimes.

Copy/cut and paste works fine for me under windows 10 64 bit, on my lenovo laptop machine, running either NVDA 2016.2.1, or, at times jaws 17 demo.

For testing, you could just turn on narrator, and turn off NVDA?

You now have to press the F10 twice in order to copy text to the clipboard. I don't know why they have done this.

Subject: [nvda] Issue with Copying to clipboard
