eSpeak Speech Player

Chris Smart

Hi.

what ever happened to the eSpeak Speech Player? I always found it a little easier to understand than the stock eSpeak NG.

For that matter, what coding knowledge and experience would someone require if they wanted to try to fiddle with the sound of eSpeak, come up with a modified English variant etc.?

Thanks

Without ignoring our moderator's throat clearing (smile) I can say that I can think of a couple of ways one might do this in reaper, and would be happy to see and participate in such a discussion on a forum there.
Alternatively, I wonder if you couldn't design a hot key set in one of the hot key programs like AutoHotKeys or whatever the more recent implementation of such would be; I've not kept up with the state of this art.

A soundboard is usually a program that allows someone to have many little audio clips cued up and assigned to hotkeys, so they can be played instantly when their hotkey is pushed.

It would be even better if said hotkeys were available globally.

Rui,

Have you consider updating the driver download to the latest on the website when NVDA 2021.1 is released? Many people try to find it all the time, especially people who aren't subscribing to this list.

q2. For other file attachments such as links, images, you can download or navigate to the destination using similar methods.

With the shortcut keys of the application, it becomes easier to focus on areas such as chat, message history and to perform some tasks; but even that doesn't save the situation from being completely bad.
Since each of the message history items is a separate focusable item, it is possible to navigate the messages with the arrow keys, while the tab key navigates over the messages instead of navigating between these sections. Areas that are not active in use are visible on the screen and there are a few key audio issues.

Phonetic Pronunciation for Vernacular Languages

Sanjog Kumawat

Hello,

I am using NVDA 2020.4 and Windows 10 Home. Few days back, there was a discussion on phonetic description of a character and how NVDA can announce the character and it’s phonetic pronunciation. I was using the shortcut NVDA + . (fullstop) twice to hear the phonetic pronunciation. The shortcut and the “Enhanced Phonetic Reading” add-on is working fine everywhere when it comes to English.

However, NVDA fails to report the phonetic pronunciation/description of a letter typed in Hindi or Marathi except when typed in Microsoft Word. I am using Office 365. When I write anything in Notepad for example, NVDA does not report the phonetic pronunciation. It used to report in the older versions like 2020.1. What could be the reason? Is there anything I can do that will solve this problem?

I’m neither a speaker nor a learner of Welsh, but I could have sworn that there were at least two voices for Welsh, one from ESpeak NG and another from Acapella or another provider. Welsh has a challenging morphology, but I’ve seen screen readers conquer tonal languages and Semitic languages.

Not a Welsh native, but a learner. From what I see the situation looks quite sad. There used to be two Welsh voices from Ivona - Geraint and Gwyneth - in both a Welsh-language (South) and Welsh English version. I used to have them for a long time but then lost them irretrievably. Can't say a whole lot about how authentic their Welsh was, because mine was too much beginner at the time, but I think Ivona was generally fairly good at the linguistic aspect of their voices. Now that the company has been taken by Amazon years ago, the voices can be no longer purchased directly from them for Sapi5 though and are no longer supported. There are some places where you can get them, like from HarpoSoftware, but when I tried demos they seemed rather buggy.

And then we have Espeak, which is not surprisingly not very authentic-sounding in Welsh at all. I guess I've once heard that there was a Welsh Festival voice but never heard it or tested it and I generally don't have much experience with Festival at all. And that's it, as far as I know.

If someone else knows more, I'd be happy to hear as well.

I am sort of silently hoping for CereProc to make the move now, as they are a Scottish company who have already created Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic voices, as well as many regional dialect British voices so why not Welsh. As a North Welsh learner I think it would be particularly fun to have the voices for these two dialects, but that's probably a total utopia for now.

Still needs a lot of work. Just using the defaults tabbing around does move but don't ever shift+tab or your blowing up all over the place. Also its error sometimes read and mostly don't.

The gamebar is still more accessible.

Re: JavaScript events related to Screen reader virtual cursor

No, that has nothing to do with whether the mouse moves.  Mouse tracking means that when you manually move the mouse, NVDA reads what is under the mouse when you move it to a new position.  That’s one way you can tell if the mouse moved where you want it to move.  I don’t know if announcements are always made, but its one way to check.

You must manually move the mouse.  The command is, using the default desktop layout, numpad insert numpad slash.  Hold numpad insert and press slash while doing so.

There is no way to have the mouse move automatically.
