Jaws is now doing better with thunderbird than nvda
I too, have had lags with NVDA and Thunderbird 60.9.0 I followed the suggestions others posted here and performance is much better. I have not tried Jaws when things lag. Can't compare to Narrator as

I do have Narrator at startup and want to switch to NVDA after logon. Maybe that isn't a good idea. I made sure Narrator and NVDA are not trying to start at the same time. Bob

NVDA is starting when I have it set not to at logon. I've looked at NVDA settings as well as in Ease of Access in control panel. It is unchecked so it shouldn't load at startup. It is checked to load

I've seen this problem too. Doesn't matter what screen reader or which PC I use. The system tray in Windows is a bit buggy me thinks. Bob

I use both. Sometimes Narrator is better at showing me the context of controls and their locations. I also prefer the keyboard layout. NVDA object navigation still confuses me. Bob
