Wow! Sounds good. Maybe this could be handled by shutting NVDA up if the windows+h key is pressed. Not sure how it would be turned back on once the dictation is done though. Definitely sounds interest

Actually, with multiple tabs open ctrl+f4 closes all tabs. That is why I was trying to find out what would close just one tab. It acts like alt+f4 and that surprised me. Dan Beaver

If you open the NVDA preferences and then open the default speech dictionary you can fix this. I did by specifying cup as the new entry. Next I entered cuhp as the replacement string. It now speaks it

An unusual but potentially very useful idea about sounds
Gene, Are you sure the sounds you are hearing are not caused by RFI?(radio frequency interference) If so I do not think it could be handled by NVDA. If it is something else then perhaps it might work.
