I think you are right about not being able to go back once you've upgraded, but to the best of my knoledge, you can put off the upgrade as long as you like.

iTunes usually gives you an option whether to update or not.

I can't speak for everyone, but I have not said in any post that iTunes is crap. Is it annoying that it's broken again, yes. However, I do think it will be fixed, eventually.

I agree. I read audio books a lot, but I will not download them from iTunes anymore. It is too much of a pain to put them back if you take them off your device for some reason. Has anyone had trouble

The moral to this story is always back your music, audio books, etc on USB drives or an external hard drive. Even if Apple didn't delete your music, something can always go wrong such as your computer
