NVDA and OCR add-on

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Thanks, Brandon,

Your explanation is very clear and very useful.

I had a go at this procedure as you describe it with little success. I suppose it has limited application then.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi, you should do the following:

1. Maximize the window to give the OCR engine the best chance of capturing the text
2. Use Object Nav to focus on the area where the text should be
3. Press NVDA Shift R to perform the OCR
4. use numpad 7 and 9 to read up and down lines respectively

This is not an ideal way to read PDF's. If the document has not been marked up accessibly, I am not sure what to tell you, in these cases, I have had little success. I see this more of a tool to read a screen, or part of a screen that is not accessible, or, for retrieving text in an image. There are other software solutions out there for converting PDF's into complete documents with OCR performed on them.

Hi,

I have just installed the OCR add-on in NVDA 2016.1 on Windows 10. I tried to read an image PDF file without success. How can I find full instructions on how to use this add-on?

I don't use it all that often, and, for something like a .pdf file, with scanned pages, I would generally use pdf2txt to handle whole file, but, with add-on installed - unless I have an old version, or something, NVDA + R, then when it tells me done, switch to screen review mode, and use numpad keys to read lines, words, etc.

Stay well

how do you open Internet Explorer?  If you are going to be searching using it directly now, you may want to make a short cut key command such as control alt I to open it.  Or you may want to put the Google home page on your desktop so you can just press enter on it and have Google open in Internet Explorer.  I'm not sure of the procedure to place a web page adddress on the desktop as a short cut.
