When replying, the issue does not exist. I don't see any odd
characters in the place of spaces. I am sure it is something to do
with just how Thunderbird is rendering his original messages. I have
seen this a few times with some individuals located in foreign
countries, so maybe it could be something to do with a font type.

I hear that oddity with his messages too. What is happening is that the spaces between words are some sort of unrecognizable character--unrecognizable to screen readers and certain synthesizers I would guess. I think it may be because he is sending his messages from an IPhone or other IOS device. It is interpreting his spaces between words as some sort of character.
