NVDA doesn't work with bandcamp web site
Rusty Perez
Hey folks,
Has any one had success playing music on the bandcamp web site? Here's a link to a page. Try and activate any of the play/pause buttons with space or nvda enter and nothing happens. My wife confirms that she can click with the mouse and getit to play. I'm pasting a link to a band called "screenreader' because I thought that was appropriate. :) https://screenreader.bandcamp.com/ |

When I try to focus the play button by navigating with object review or document review mode, nvda reports "off screen" I'm pretty novice at these review modes so can someone tell me what's going on here, and what I may be able to do to fix this? I'm thinking of releasing some of my music on bandcamp, but not if it's not accessible. :) Rusty On 3/4/18, Rusty Perez <rustys.lists@...> wrote:

It is working with JAWS 18. On my old machine I could never get the bandcamp player to play either. If there's no solution to this, we should probably bring this up with Bandcamp support. -----Original Message-----

1. Get to a play button, I do this with the arrow keys.

2. Hit NVDA-numpad slash. 3. Hit numpad-slash. 4. Hear music come from your noise-making thingies. I should add, this is in Firefox. On 3/4/2018 12:55, Rusty Perez wrote:

Don't try to use object navigation, document
navigation or screen review. They are the last resort and won't work
most of the time. Be on the button in browse mode. Route the mouse
to the current location, numpad insert and while holding it, press numpad
slash. Then release both keys. Then left click with numpad
slash. You should always try this when space bar and then enter
fail.

Well I’ll try this on the main page. Do you happen to know if this site is running old Adobe Flash or do they have an HTML 5 player.

You don't have to use the arrow keys. You can
use the letter b. Do you know quick navigation keys for move to button,
move to check box, move to edit field, move to heading, and perhaps there are
one or two or three others I am not thinking of now. These are essential
for efficient navigation. In addition, you can tab to these structures if
you aren't exactly on them. Using the arrow keys is inefficient and in
some cases, it may not place you exactly on a control.

I do know them, yes. I use the arrows because there are a lot of other

buttons, plus I probably want to see the track name first. So I'll use something like page down or headings to get to the tracks, and navigate through them. In any case, yeah, get on the button however you do it, the real thing you need is routing and clicking with the slash. That's why I said "I use the arrow keys", implying that you could do whatever the hell you like. On 3/4/2018 13:37, Gene wrote:

That isn't an efficient way to find the name of the
track on a site who's layout you don't know. It is likely to be a heading
or you may find it reasonably efficiently if it isn't by using the skip blocks
of links command. On this page, the name is a heading. After you see
the name and look down to see if there is other information you want to see such
as the name of the group, using the b command is the most efficient way to get
to the control. Just using commands like page down and arrow keys doesn't
give you any point of reference. You are just moving a certain distance
you hope will place you on or near the item. Searching for likely
structures such as a heading is a much better bet when a page layout isn't
known.

Hello,
He play/pause button does not respond to keyboard input, it does respond to clicks. So, you should be able to use NVDA+* and then * to move the mouse to the object navigator and then click on it. Also, there is a good chance that nvda+enter will work. Hi. It doesn't work with Jaws either. Sometimes it is not the screen reader's fault, but the way in which the Java Script was coded by the developer of the site/sites in question. Cheers!

I've generally found that you have to root your mouse first before you simulate a mouse press, otherwise the player won't play anything. It would be useful to bring that up with Bandcamp support I think.

Yes but it is i fear the problem with the website as very few seem to need this messing about to work. the fact tht you have used single key nav to get to a button really should be enough for most sites. Having said this, I found what you suggest did not work for me either.

Using a mouse click is necessary enough of the time
that anyone receiving good Internet instruction should be told of this. I
think those who follow my messages know my opinion of the Internet instruction
most people get. I consider most of it to range between adequate, that is
not good but tolerable to poor.

Also, you are assuming it isn't working in your
case because the mouse method isn't working. We don't know that. How
do we know it isn't your computer not playing the stream, in whatever format it
is in. My guess is it's flash.
