I'm just trying Open office for the first time. So far only taken the word processor, Writer, for a spin. It seems very accessible, though I have heard it will not tell you as much information about graphics if you use a screen-reader. It seems to work well with both nVDA and JAWS 18 (I don't have JAWS 2018, but I imagine the results will be much the same). I think people will like the old-style menus, if you're one of those who hates Microsoft's ribbons. I don't hate them, but I confess the old menus seem less clunky from my perspective.

Now, anyone got any opinions on Open Office VS Libre Office? They seem quite similar suites.

Hi,

Open and libre office are both freeware, and come with the following apps:

writer, which is a word processor, calc which is a spreadsheet program,
Math which is used to create formulas, impress which is a presentation
package, a drawing program, and a database program. Hope this helps.

Hi folks,

For those that find Web wiki tables more readable these should help:

https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Shortcuts_Accessibility

https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/General_Shortcut_Keys_in

https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Shortcut_Keys_for_Writer

https://help.libreoffice.org/Calc/Shortcut_Keys_for_Spreadsheets

https://help.libreoffice.org/Impress/Using_Shortcut_Keys_in_Impress

https://help.libreoffice.org/Draw/Shortcut_Keys_for_Drawings
https://help.libreoffice.org/Draw/Shortcut_Keys_for_Drawing_Objects

And, something to keep in mind is that keyboard accelerators (dynamically assigned within UI by language locale) are becoming more prevalent in the UI. They supplement legacy "fixed" hard coded keyboard shortcuts. Beyond these shortcut tables it is worth keeping track of those that help your work flow.

Please, if you find any inaccuracies in these tabular listings please ask at https://ask.libreoffice.org  Or the LibreOffice accessibility@... mail list.

Otherwise, it is not user support but if you've found a bug in any facet of the Windows accessibility support, the LibreOffice project BugZilla instance:https://bugs.documentfoundation.org is available to report--we review them all.

Enjoy!

Stuart

I am kind of amazed so few people have heard of OO and LibreOffice. OpenOffice is far more accessible with NVDA than LO, but LO can take code directly from OO if they want to use some of the same accessibility information. LO is a better program overall. It can even give you the ability to work with documents within Google Drive without using an add on. I'm also kind of amazed more NVDA developers are not working as closely with OO and LO as they do with Microsoft Office, but there you go. Their wikis are very good if you want some more in depth keyboard navigation.

Yes, same here. I’ve just been trying out Apache Open Office over the last few days. I have mS Office 2010 on this computer, but it’s good to keep one’s options open, and there are some things I already like a lot about OO – must admit that even though I don’t hate MS’s ribbons as such, the classic menus are nicer.

I was thinking of taking Libre for a spin as well. Too bad if it isn’t quite accessible. But it sounds like you still recommend it….

Hello,

May I ask, what's inaccessible in LibreOffice? I've been playing with it for a while, and couldn't find any problems so far. I never tried OpenOffice though.

Thanks, just being curious.

Vlad.

Hi,

One part that I can't figure out is the navigator in both of the
programs.  As far as I know it may be the only parts that are.  I have
yet to play with the database math or drawing stuff though.

For me it is the templets windows, on both programs. Like I said, Libre is a better program overall but OpenOffice is much more accessible, which is weird! I am gonna check out their accessibility wiki's and really dive into these keyboard commands. Both seem to be much easier to navigate than MS Office in terms of fewer keyboard commands to do various things, but I dislike the ribbon interface anyway so I have a bias. If anyone wants these, get them from Ninite's accessible programs database.
