I used GW Connect for a while, but now, even the patch doesn't seem to work. I installed it on one of my machines a few nights ago, but it wouldn't even let me see my contacts. This is truly sad, as it was great software. I don't know why Microsoft is forcing everyone to use their software, especially when it's not even fully accessible! Usually, I use S Portable, which is a portable version of regular Skype 7 if I remember correctly. Granted, I don't really like the interface there either, especially as I have to use Task Manager to close the program, but at least it's better than the one that my friend has on his laptop! I tried it and got a headache! Here is the link to S Portable. https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/sportablePersonally, I liked MSN/Windows Live Messenger better than all of the above, as it was simple, fast, and in its earlier days, didn't include all sorts of unnecessary features! Now, I must find an accessible alternative to Skype. *sigh* All the best, Eleni

Apparently, it has been discontinued. But it works with XP, so I will have to investigate it! Some other software was also mentioned here, including Meeting Space, Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, Microsoft Office Live Meeting, and SharedView. I don't have Office, but I can still research the others. Thank you so much for mentioning this! If nothing else, NetMeeting will be accessible! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_NetMeeting

I'm not exactly a fan of the new version of skype. If I can figure out how to invite multiple people to a skype call, that would be great. However, I can use this new version of skype ok. Granted, I don't like it as well as 7.4, but I can use it.

What about a Sip client and a free number from a place like Callcentric? I usually prefer portable software but I am willing to try a regular installer if something is truly accessible. I think I found such a program once, but I don't remember its name. It wasn't designed specifically for the blind, but it worked well with NVDA.

I have never had an issue with the audio on Skype, except when it was incredibly new, or when the connection itself is bad. What is Zoom?

Personally, I liked MSN/Windows Live Messenger better than all of the above, as it was simple, fast, and in its earlier days, didn't include all sorts of unnecessary features! Now, I must find an accessible alternative to Skype. *sigh*

I'm really not sure why everyone is hating on skype. Stereo audio
is great and all in recordings. When talking, it's just a
frustrating distraction. I just want to talk.
Team talk is nice, but who in the sighted world uses it? Nobody
that I know of, so that's a serious limitation for me.
Think skype is bad for screen readers? Try out discord. Tons of
unlabeled buttons.
Speaking of audio issues. Team talk has horrific issues if one is
using speakers and soundcard does not support echo cancelation or
noise suppression, both of which make the audio quality
deteriorate so bad you might as well use another service and save
your bandwidth, too. For talking, skype handles it wonderfully in
comparison and also does a ton better if your internet isn't the
greatest.
It is still the king of multi platform, mainstream, and screen
reader accessible voice communication. Google is kind of there but
I know very few who use it. Team speak is really nice too,
supports stereo audio and blows the doors off team talk every
which way. I know a few people who use it, but not many. I think
whatsapp also supports voice calling. I have never tried it before
but would be curious if you could be in calls on the web.
Just my thoughts, for what it's worth.

Maybe it is for you. Not everyone needs high quality audio for voice
communication, using tons of mobile internet that they don't have. I
have used zoom, and I see absolutely 0 difference in audio quality.
Mostly because of internal microphones with noise suppression
enabled.

Very valid point.
I think all of them support it apart from team speak. Though now

Well I use Skype and TT on my PC not in a mobile environment due to a Android phone that has 8 GB of memory. I do 99.9 percent of my stuff on said PC with a 200 MBPS download speed on my Spectrum connection. Skype technologies SA should
never should have sold their souls to the devil AKA MS. V 4.X had great audio. MS broke it.

Maybe it is for you. Not everyone needs high quality audio for voice communication, using tons of mobile internet that they don't have. I have used zoom, and I see absolutely 0 difference in audio quality. Mostly because of internal microphones with noise
suppression enabled.

If I were a podcaster I’d use Zoom or TT. Sorry, but I standby what I said. The audio is crap.

The audio quality is fine. It’s not zoom quality but I can understand what’s beeing said, and if I can do my job still Ill take it. I am actually loving skype and I do use it on my vodcasts.
The audio quality is crap. TeamTalk is better for what you want to do.

I'm not exactly a fan of the new version of skype. If I can figure
out how to invite multiple people to a skype call, that would be
great. However, I can use this new version of skype ok. Granted, I
don't like it as well as 7.4, but I can use it.

The beefs I have have to do with telephonic functionality. Been stuck on V 7/4 desktop since forever since using all facets of this feature still haven’t been fixed/addressed.

Glenn I'm really not sure why everyone is hating on skype. Stereo audio is great and all in recordings. When talking, it's just a frustrating distraction. I just want to talk. Team talk is nice, but who in the sighted world uses it? Nobody that I know of, so that's a serious limitation for me. Think skype is bad for screen readers? Try out discord. Tons of unlabeled buttons. Speaking of audio issues. Team talk has horrific issues if one is using speakers and soundcard does not support echo cancelation or noise suppression, both of which make the audio quality deteriorate so bad you might as well use another service and save your bandwidth, too. For talking, skype handles it wonderfully in comparison and also does a ton better if your internet isn't the greatest. It is still the king of multi platform, mainstream, and screen reader accessible voice communication. Google is kind of there but I know very few who use it. Team speak is really nice too, supports stereo audio and blows the doors off team talk every which way. I know a few people who use it, but not many. I think whatsapp also supports voice calling. I have never tried it before but would be curious if you could be in calls on the web. Just my thoughts, for what it's worth. On 16-Jul-2018 1:38 PM, Lino Morales wrote: The audio quality is crap.
