Yes I know that, but that is not the issue here at all, In the UK hash was always number, but I've long since fixed that on. the point is that the machine has switched its keyboard to us English. Can somebody explain to me how to use windows space to fix it the? Has this always been there. I've never encountered it in many years, sounds very dangerous if true. I do know some screenreaders can change language using certain easy to hit keys, as \I'm always rescuing Dolphin users from all sorts of bizarre languages and synths!

I believe the person with this problem is using
Windows 7. Is that the command in Windows 7 or was it changed for Windows
10? I suspect the command in Windows 7 is something else. I don't
think that Windows 7 made much use of Windows key letter commands.

It may be a change in Word, it may not. It
may be a change in the keyboard language input in Windows. Whatever the
case, the change almost certainly resulted in accidentally pressing a short cut
command and the question is, what shortcut command changes the language language
in Windows and what command changes the language Word is using.
It can be easily determined if the change is in the
keyboard input for Windows setting or the Word language. Open
Notepad. Press shift 3. What do you hear? If you hear what you
expect to hear, the change is in Word. If you still hear the wrong thing,
the change is in Windows.

Don't try that combination unless you know what it
does. It may be a short cut command that changes a setting in Word you
won't know about until you print a document and it isn't formatted
correctly. Don't use alt anything combinations unless you know what they
do.
There are some combinations that are so standard
that you can assume that they do this or something similar. Alt f usually
opens the file menu. That is safe to try. But trying combinations
that are not standardized and you have no idea what they do, if anything, is a
bad idea. And it definitely won't do what you want since combinations like
that are commands, if they do anything.
It is possible you changed the language your
computer keyboard input is set to. There is a short cut for that
purpose. You may have pressed the short cut command without knowing
it. Someone will probably tell you the command if you don't know it.
You can try it and see what happens. I don't know it, I just know there is
one. I also believe that you will hear the language announced that you
have switched to and that you can keep pressing it until you get to the language
you want. I don't know this, but based on comments earlier in the thread,
it will probably say Brittish English or something similar when you get to the
one you want.

Hi It’s not a physical layout it’s a logical one. Try pressing the Windows key+spacebar repeatedly to cycle around the available keyboard mappings. NVDA will read out the different keyboard layouts you have available. These depend on which language packs you have installed on your machine.
Cheers

Oops, that should have been SHIFT+Number Row 3.
When I'm in UK keyboard format I get the pounds sterling symbol and if I'm in US keyboard mode I get the number/hashtag/pound sign symbol. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 A little kindness from person to person is better than a vast love for all humankind. ~ Richard Dehmel

what your computer thinks the layout of the keyboard is has changed. My girlfriend regularly uses a computer whigh has a UK keyboard, but Windows is deliberately set to German keyboard layout, so she gets the German symbols when she presses keys which happen to have something else written on the keytops. Being blind, she doesn't care what's written on the keytops, and neither does the computer - it just thinks "I've been told I have a German keyboard layout, therefore those are the symbols you get when you press keys". I ask again, what do you get when you press shift-2? Double quotation marks would indicate a UK layout; at-sign would indicate a US layout. Regards, Antony. I suspect it is actually putting the number sign in the document. When in word look at the language in use for the spellchecker and see what it says. My guess is it will say English US. However I do not think I've ever had windows itself change languages without doing it on purpose. What we need is an expert on this here. Changing what it says won't make it put the right character into a document at all. Don't mess with the dictionary, its just compounding the problem. Sakina, can you send me an attached document with the symbol in it that you get where pound used to be, and also type the same thing into the message body as well, in case its only happening in the word program.
